INKTRODUCTION. It is not uncommon for Americans to give ticker-tape parades to homecoming winning basketball teams like the Chicago Bulls or Olympic medallists; but for a pianist- that's practically unheard of. Well, that is exactly what happened to Van Cliburn, the tall Texan, when he won the First (ever) Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. A virtual unknown on Russian soil, he was soon to be the favourite going into the finals. The Russians were shocked but not surprised for Cliburn possessed charm, charisma, stature and not forgetting good technique. Practically every major classical recording star has won a major competition, Martha Argerich - the Chopin Competition; Vladimir Ashkenazy - 2nd Tchaikovsky Competition 1962; Murray Perahia - Leeds Piano Competition; Kristian Zimmerman - Chopin Competition and the list goes on and on. In fact it is now a great belief that one needs a major competition to bolster one's career. Major competitions like the Leeds, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, Tchaikovsky and Chopin Competitions give the winners major career breakthroughs, with engagements at various major halls and festivals, recording contracts with major labels like DG, EMI or Teldec (who can normally afford the crème de la crème). Past winners of the Van Cliburn competition in recent years have included Jose Fenghali and Alexei Sultanov.

    Parsadanian, Boris
    Symphony No. 7

The music of Armenian composer Boris Parsadanian may never gain a wide audience, but he certainly should gather a loyal one based upon, and aided by, the unique and excellent works on this CD. A broad range of music is presented here. Both the String Quartet and the Violin Sonata are lyrical and dissonant scores. In the massively orchestrated one movement Symphony No. 7, the choir frames an orchestral "Lamento", which is a reworking of music by Khachaturian. What a great composer!

    http://www.happening.com.sg/music/1998/features/november/sso/
by Jesse Peng On the night of the 23rd, conductor Emeritus Choo Huey returned with Russian virtuoso Yakov Kasman, Silver Medallist at the 1997 Van Cliburn Piano Competition, for a night of Rachmaninov and Shostakovich with the SSO. First of all, I must say that Rachmaninov’s 2nd in C Minor doesn’t really ‘move’ me, either aesthetically, romantically or intellectually, as what the greater part of the 20th century conveniently formulated into ‘romanticism’ ignored certain parts of his work which stands out as so much more than an ‘attractive tune’. Yakov Kasman, a reputedly superb pianist, starts with doing the opposite of what most Rach pianists do, he builds. Listening to him work the Moderato was an agonising experience, at certain points during the motif I had a sudden illumination that what was played was not Rach’s 2nd but instead some composer vaguely similar in style with him. Perhaps there isn’t really a correct expressive structure behind one of the world’s greatest emotive composers, but to learn not to ‘build’ at the first instance was what I considered to be the foremost aspects of a good interpreter of Rach. Kasman overstressed the motif playing with a strange expressiveness that did not suit the Moderato, it was as if he worked backwards… from the tutti in the finale, with cadenza-like maestoso statements, actions that failed to distinguish the motif from the background of the orchestra. During the Adagio sostenuto the orchestra was exceedingly loud at times, and the sedate movement of the Chopin-ish brevity was amazingly overshadowed, excessively overshadowed by BOTH the pianist and the orchestra. NOT being a fan of Rachmaninov helped, as I squirmed in my seat waiting for, what is called in layman terms, the ‘good parts’ to come. The Scherzando towards the end was much too brief, somehow there wasn’t a sense of continuity with the slow moving cadenza straight after the prelude of the 3rd movement. Once again, failing all forms of music terminology I could only say to myself, ‘it was disappointing’.
