The University of Nebraska at Omaha granted Omaha Symphony music director Victor Yampolsky an honorary doctor of letters degree at commencement, May 10. For seven seasons Yampolsky has served as music director of the Omaha Symphony, raising the artistic level of the orchestra through his work on the symphony's MasterWorks and Chamber series. "I am able to accept this honor in part because of the knowledge that I share with the musicians and the public in the Midlands," said Yampolsky. "But the honor reflects on those in this city and in my own life from whom I have learned so much." "I'm lucky to be here in this very special community, which combines deep understanding of classical music with modesty and unselfishness."

American wins Cliburn contest By Nancy Kruh
The Dallas Morning News
Sunday, June 9, 1997 Californian is 1st U.S. pianist to get gold medal in 16 years FORT WORTH Without conservatory training or even a degree in music, Californian Jon Nakamatsu took the top prize Sunday at the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The 28-year-old high school German teacher becomes the first American in 16 years to wear a gold medal in the quadrennial event. No one seemed more stunned by the results than the recipient. "I was just happy to be in the preliminaries, and I never would have thought I'd be here," he said after the afternoon awards ceremony at the Tarrant County Convention Center Theatre. Second prize and a silver medal went to Yakov Kasman, 30, of Russia. The bronze medal was awarded to Aviram Reichert, 25, of Israel. Besides the gold medal, Mr. Nakamatsu won cash and a performance contract worth more than $250,000. The Cliburn's prize package is generally considered the most valuable among the scores of piano competitions worldwide. The awards ceremony was the climax of the 17-day contest, which began with 35 pianists May 23. The 12 semifinalists were announced May 27. The six finalists were chosen last Monday.

Six pianists play their way into Cliburn finals By The Fort Worth Star-Telegram
June 3, 1997 Six pianists representing five countries and a broad spectrum of performance styles played their way into the finals of the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition last night. The six represent what is generally considered to be the strongest Cliburn field in recent memory. "We're happy because we heard such beautiful playing and sad because we had to eliminate the others," juror Jerome Lowenthal said. "There's no shadow in this story." Tom Andrews, an audience member from Duxbury, Mass., who attended the '93 Cliburn said: "The ones they picked were the most consistently solid performers." The jury produced a field that includes Jon Nakamatsu, the lone representative from the United States who has played with popular intensity throughout the competition, and two Russians Yakov Kasman and Katia Skanavi. "This is more than what I could have asked for. I'm so pleased," said Nakamatsu. "What I have to do now is go practice." Kasman, who beat his chair in elation when his name was announced, is a traditional bravura Russian pianist who can pound out the romantics with the best.

The Monterey County Herald, Monday, November 16, 1998 Conductor Tamarkin
sets high standard By Barbara Rose Shuler
Special to The Herald
The first lady set the bar high for the gentlemen Sunday afternoon as she guided the Monterey Symphony through an exhilarating performance of its second concert of the season at the Sunset Center in Carmel.
Kate Tamarkin, the first woman in the symphony's 52-year history to conduct a subscription concert, distinguished herself with the ability and sophistication to lead this orchestra to exciting new levels.
Tamarkin is one of seven candidates selected to audition this season for the position of the symphony's music director.
With five more conductors yet to audition, it's premature to begin guessing how the selection committee will vote, but out-dazzling Tamarkin will be quite a challenge.
She has established a reputation as an inspired and innovative conductor, winning acclaim for her years as music director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the East Texas Symphony Orchestra.
She conducted two major works from the standard repertoire: Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Dvorak's lush Symphony No. 8 in G major.

Can this really be the last of the NINTH INNING here for ETSOA Conductor Kate Tamarkin as she wraps up a successful 10 years of musical activities in this community? Seems as if it was just yesterday that Kate began a short commute from the Dallas Symphony associate conductor position, then added the Vermont State Orchestra, conducting classes at University of Minneapolis, MN, and a myriad of guest conducting jaunts across the US (and Moldova). 'Tis been a whirlwind of activity, marriage, and jetting in and out of communities in a variety of times and temperatures (100 degrees/Dallas noon-but 10 below at bedtime in Minneapolis.)
A spate of wonderful guest artists drawn from the rising prodigy ranks as well the familiar virtuoso performers has been Kate's 'gift' to ETSOA audiences, plus music that has been the gamut of traditional, (some little heard of favorite composers.) And ETSOA has hosted composers, including Donald Grantham, Hilary Tan, and Kevin Putz. Add in the semi-staged operas of Magic Flute, Merry Widow and the rousing Park, Youth and Kinderkonzerts for a charismatic, fun and musically enriching decade.

Every so often Jon Nakamatsu has to pinch himself. Is he really a concert pianist touring the globe and performing at Carnegie Hall? An artist whose work has been described by a New York Times in company with a story on James Michener? Nakamatsu says he was stunned by the standing ovations he received during the two-week competition in Texas. Fans gave him a toy armadillo for luck. Fort Worth Star-Telegram The prize opened doors. Besides winning $20,000 in cash and a $10,000 wardrobe allowance, Cliburn medalists are sent on a two-year concert tour in the United States and Europe.
