Since his debut in 1959, Igor Kipnis has become one of the world's best-known harpsichordists, with more than fifty solo recordings in his discography. He has also performed and recorded on the antique fortepiano. Readers of the many magazines for which he has written will also know of his long-standing interest in romantic piano literature and its great performers. In 1995, Kipnis heard Karen Kushner's acclaimed recordings of the Chopin Mazurkas, released by Connoisseur Society. Shortly afterward the two met and expressed their admiration for each others' playing. They made their debut as a performing Duo later that year, and have since performed in in more than a dozen states and in Europe and South America. The recordings on the debut CD, entitled "Four Hands," derive from these performances. The rare performance ofBrahms's

From: kevin_mcelhone@hotmail.com.geentroep (Kevin McElhone) To: "Mechanical Music Digest" Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2002 08:28:43 -0000 Subject: Furthest Traveled Mechanical Music Item I thought I would start a possible new thread for discussion: What is the world's furthest travelled piece of mechanical music? It could be a 58-note organ roll which I have in my collection, "King Carnival March by George Rosey". It was made by Aeolian in U.S.A., and sold by a retailer in Brussels, Belgium. A collector in France offered to sell it to me, but by the time I had replied he had moved to Southern Spain. I live in UK so this roll has been in five countries now! Alternatively it could be the player piano that Captain Robert Falcon Scott took to McMurdo sound in Antarctica in 1910-1912. Or some of the players on American warships in World War 1? What do others think or know? It would be nice to know where a person lives, at least the name of the nearest known city and country. If one were to plan a vacation, this information would be very useful in determining a route. Most of us only know each other by their name, and information from their postings. For instance, I know that Lee lives in Southside Virginia, but that is a large area. I cannot search his ISP, Earthlink, like I could if it were "Exis.net", to find the area of service. A closing much like the return address on a letter would be nice. Dorothy DeLay, Igor Kipnis among Classical Music figures who died in 2002
By Ben Mattison, Andante.com January 3, 2002
Dorothy DeLay
, a beloved violin teacher for half a century, and Igor Kipnis , who helped bring the harpsichord to new prominence, were among the classical music figures who died in 2002.
Kipnis grew up in a musical family and studied piano before hearing Wanda Landowska play Bach and becoming smitten with the harpsichord. In the 1960s, he became an important part of the burgeoning early music movement, and also played contemporary music and jazz. Among the composers who wrote harpsichord works for him are George Rochberg, Ned Rorem and Richard Rodney Bennett. He was also accomplished on the clavichord, fortepiano, and, more recently, on the modern piano.
The classical world also lost John Crosby , who founded Santa Fe Opera, bringing contemporary European works to the United States; opera director Herbert Wernicke , who collapsed on the street in Basel, Switzerland, leaving unfinished a much-anticipated Ring cycle for Munich; Yevgeny Svetlanov, longtime chief conductor of the USSR State Symphony and the Bolshoi Theater and one of the few musicians who earned wide admiration in the West for a career spent largely inside the Soviet Union; and

When I was a student at Yale University's School of Music in the 1950s, I once attended a faculty party where harpsichordist Ralph Kirkpatrick reminisced about his errant youth as a pianist before he fell in love with the harpsichord and its literature - it was a time during which he said that he had a great admiration for the flashy virtuoso music of Liszt. We dared him to play something by Liszt, and he finally obliged by going to the piano and playing the Sixth Hungarian Rhapsody. At first he had us in stitches with his parody of the exaggerated excesses of the virtuoso pianist, but by the slow middle section the playing had become totally serious, and the repeated octave windup of the finale was a knockout.
Thus I was not surprised to learn a few years ago that Igor Kipnis, after over forty years as one of the preeminent harpsichordists of our time, had finally come out of the closet and revealed his inner soul as one totally dedicated to and extremely knowledgeable about the great body of piano literature of the nineteenth century, and more importantly, the great legacy of recorded performances of all the distinguished pianists of recent history.

Kipnis was one of the world’s leading harpsichordists and also played clavichord, fortepiano and the modern piano. He made more than 80 recordings and was one of the few solo harpsichordists to perform with major symphony orchestras. Kipnis was, as music critic Teri Noel Towe wrote recently, "one of the all-time greats." He was a serious and brilliant man with an ebullient personality and, not surprisingly, made many friends here in the past decade when he came to perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
