Web Search On the Aisle INDEX Kissin at Carnegie Hall: The Tenth Anniversary Concert October 14, 2000 by Philip Anson / October 25, 2000 On the Aisle The encores (which were exactly the same throughout Kissin’s US tour) were Liszt's arrangement of Schumann's ``Widmung,'' Chopin's ``Revolutionary'' Etude, Grünfeld's arrangement of tunes from Johann Strauss Jr.’s "Die Fledermaus", and Tango by Albeniz. They were all enjoyable dazzlers, played with plenty of wrong notes, for a change. [INDEX] (c) La Scena Musicale 2000

Festival Review: Verbier Festival and Academy By Patricia Boccadoro
VERBIER, SWITZERLAND, 12 August 2002
- Verbier, which is situated just a short drive away and up from the picturesque Swiss towns of Lausanne, Vevey, and Montreux, is a sleek, well-heeled ski resort nestling at over 1500 feet up in the heart of the Alps. As far as the eye can see, snow glints on the majestic crags and slopes of the Mont Blanc, and chalet -style shops, hotels and restaurants line the steep winding road to the top. It leads nowhere, except to a large, white, purpose - built tent, set up to host a pleiade of international musicians who gather each summer for a festival.
The Verbier Festival and Academy was set up in 1994 by Martin T:son Engstroem. Born in Sweden, Engstroem first worked as an agent in both London and Paris, and the result of his long association with the music business was a very large address book. After a holiday in the Swiss Alpine village, he found the setting ideally suited to a music festival which he was able to establish with the help of all his contacts, not least that of his wife, Barbara Hendricks, now a regular visitor.

[71'10"] full-price by Johann D'Souza This concert has been dubbed as a legendary concert. But why legendary ? Well it does not seem so obvious until one finds that it is performed by a 12 year-old boy. What prompted me to buy this disc was the fact that I was talking to a friend who had said that he had seen Kissin in London a while back and in his words he said that Kissin is "unbelievably exciting, breathtaking, truly a genius." The CD's front sleeve displays a boy totally in control of what he is doing. His eyes peering in the distance, his hands stretched out decked on the keyboard giving you that feeling of a person waiting to show the world what he is made of - and he does not take long to prove it to you! From the first long tutti to the introduction of the E minor concerto you're straight away thrust into a sense of total bewilderment. I remember a couple of years ago when the SSO had invited 3 Russian children to perform under the baton of Choo Hoey. Barely 14, they played Lalo's Symphonie Espagnol , Wienawski's Second Violin Concerto and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2. I was stunned by their skill but I came out of the concert hall a bit dismayed. I was disappointed because there was a cold feeling in their playing, like a bunch of robots fresh off the conveyor belt. Technically they were so perfect it was mind boggling. From their pizzicati to their double stops, everything was perfect. The pianist too was a technical wizard from the moment she greeted her eager audience (with a quick bow and off to the piano she went). However from the initial seven or nine chords you just felt that it was a machine playing.

On the night of February 21, 2001, Grammy awards will be given out to pop bands, rock bands, boy bands, girl groups, heavy metal acts, and acoustic pioneers. Madonna will make an appearance, as will Enrique Iglesias and Paul Simon. There will be glitzy production numbers and wooden acceptance speeches. Outfits and hair styles will be critiqued; losers will say it was an honor just to be nominated; high-fives will be exchanged among the victorious. But not all the nominees for this year's Grammys will appear on the CBS telecast; in fact, only about thirty of the one hundred nominated categories will have their awards handed out live. Many of the smaller categories, such as folk, bluegrass, reggae, and spoken word, will have their winners mentioned, but usually only in a quick crawl of words across the bottom of the screen either going into or coming out of commercial breaks. It goes without saying: winners in the Polka category (yes, there is a polka category) do not come up on stage to accept their trophy. Even for the world's most talented musicians, fame can be awfully fleeting.

People who have, or might have Asperger Syndrome
Real People Ficticious Characters WARNING : This document lists several persons who might have been aspies, and who are great achievers. These are the EXCEPTION , not the rule. It is important to avoid making the mistake of expecting all aspies to have the same abilities and potential as those listed below! Such comparisons are hurtful and unfair. Some of the persons mentioned here are no longer alive. It is sometimes difficult to get a definitive diagnosis even for living, cooperative persons, let alone persons who no longer are available for comment. Some of the names are mere speculation. It is perfectly possible for someone to have been included in this list incorrectly. Most of the names have been collected from a post which I intiated in the AspergerOasis forum "List of Asperger Achievers". The list also includes the original text where possible. Real People Einstein Alfred Jarry My husband and I read about the late 19th/early 20th century writer Alfred Jarry (the Ubu plays), and believe he might have had AS. He adopted the exaggerated persona of one of his Classics teachers, spoke in a metallic monotone, used the royal "we" pronoun for himself, lived alone in a crawl space with a stuffed owl, mostly ate fish and not much else, etc. Erik Satie Also, the French composer Erik Satie, an eccentric loner who went to music school in his 40s, and was very formal, described as shy, could not keep a relationship with a girlfriend, though he tried. He was well liked by colleagues, but kept his distance. Both men had bizarre senses of humor (wonderful to us). There are a few people who are suspects, but who are still alive, so I won't mention them.

With Classical 101, we introduce music fans to key composers and performers, important stylistic movements, and milestone recordings in the history of classical music. And you can access an audio tour and essay on Chopin's works HERE
Frederic Chopin, An Iron Will In September 1831, at the end of an exhausting journey through war-torn Europe, a 21-year-old Polish pianist arrived in Paris. His name, Frederic Chopin, would soon become known to the entire city, and before long would be celebrated wherever music was heard, but the young man started out with little more than his talent, a few letters of recommendation, and an iron will to succeed. Indeed, for years people assumed there was some sort of cosmic connection between Chopin's determination to make a name for himself and the fact that he had been born in the village outside Warsaw of Zelazowa Wola, whose name was sometimes translated as "Iron Will." In fact, Zelazowa Wola was plain old "Ironville."

American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne was awarded the highest honor, Musician of the Year, for her lifetime achievement as a singer. Ms. Horne has sung in more than 230 performances at The Metropolitan Opera, including "Barber of Seville" and "Carmen". She also recently established the non-profit Marilyn Horne Foundation to encourage more soloists to sing in recitals and not just operas. Other award recipients include: Gunther Schuller, Composer of the Year; Michael Tilson Thomas, Conductor of the Year; Pianist Evgeny Kissin, Instrumentalist of the Year; and the Tokyo String Quartet, Ensemble of the Year. All of the artists are profiled in the guide.

The exception to this are the two brilliant piano concertos composed in the earlier portion of his career. On this CD, these two works are presented here from a concert performed in 1984, by a then 12 year-old wunderkind, Evgeny Kissin. Tracks: Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 11
