Jan. 31, 1997 Pianist Klein to Appear March 5 Internationally acclaimed pianist Andreas Klein will perform March 5 at 8 p.m. in the Abbott Concert Hall of the Kleinpell Fine Arts building at UW-River Falls. Admission at the door will be $5. No advance tickets will be sold for this event. "This is an incredible opportunity to listen to a world-class musician. He has numerous talents and abilities and is very captivating," says Kaye Schendel, director of UW-RF's Wyman Performance series. Klein performs in recital and with orchestras from around the world. At a recent concert, Klein was asked to substitute for renowned colleague Claude Frank just 24 hours before a performance and play Beethoven's "Concerto No. 3." His performance earned him an invitation for the next season. Enthusiastic audiences and the media greeted Klein last fall as he toured Germany, his native country. His performances were often encored three times. A recital at the National Gallery of Art in Dresden, Germany, "An Evening with Beethoven," was broadcast live on the radio throughout Germany. Also last season, conductors and audiences admired Klein for performances with orchestras. He made his debut in Canada with the Sault Symphony, and in Florida, he performed the forgotten "Piano Concerto No. 2" by Mozart with the Gainesville Symphony.

Celebrated for his expressive and poetic performances, Andreas Klein is a luminous and captivating pianist, whose artistic triumphs received acclaim from critics and presenters internationally.
Comments from New York City recital echoed back " he gave a very successful concert on our series, his Beethoven and Chopin were a hit with our audience ." (Rockefeller University)
" Klein's scrupulous attention to beauty and evenness of tone served the piano music well. He coaxed sparkling clarity from the piano's upper reaches and commanding, stentorian rumble from the bass. Judicious pedaling created a lovely, filmy quality in the second movement's plaintive piano chorales and tender melodies ." (Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto with the Springfield Symphony, MA) SPRINGFIELD UNION.
Music Director Thomas Conlin of the Virginia Symphony had this to say about Klein's interpretation of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto: " This was as exciting and dramatic a performance of the Emperor as anyone could ever imagine. I truly hope we can make music together soon again! "

Andreas Lucewicz - about my career
YOUTH
My musical studies began with the listening and
performance habits of my parents, where my father
was cantor and church musician and my mother
flautist and piano teacher.
During my education in school I was member of the
Windsbacher Knabenchor, later singer in the
choir boarding-school Laubacher Kantorei. Here
I sang spiritual and worldly works of the fourteenth
to the twentieth century in all four voices. The piano I learned by self-study. In addition I played the transverse flute, horn and organ. With this basis I began to study the piano after my school education. STUDIES The degree for private teaching followed the studies and in Vienna with Dieter Weber. I succeeded with classes in Munich. My deep relation to the Lied was intensified in the master classes of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf I got lectureships at different music schools

Faculty member's bequest largest gift in UW-RF history
A former faculty member who found a home at UW-River Falls has bequeathed it the largest gift in the institution's history. The bequest of $600,000 was presented from the estate of Louis Wayne Tyler, an English department faculty member who taught 19 years before his retirement in 1980. The Janesville native died in September 1995. His friend and estate executor, former River Falls public schools English teacher Ben Hawkinson, said the estate may generate up to another $100,000 for the University after the estate is closed next summer.
