Ozawa Hall, Tanglewood Performer: Richard Goode
, piano Program: Mozart, Sonata in F, K. 533/494; Debussy, Four Preludes; Beethoven, Piano Sonata No. 26 in E-flat, Op. 81a ("Les Adieux"); Schubert, Piano Sonata No. 20 in A, D. 959 I have never heard Goode live, only on recordings, & he was at least as good (no pun intended). The Andante (2nd movement) of the Mozart sounded superb, as we stood outside waiting to get in, safe from mosquito attack. Very different were the Debussy pieces ("La Puerta del Viño", Bk. II, No. 3; "La Danse de Puck", Bk. I, No. 11; "La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune", Bk. II, No. 7; "Général Lavine — excentrique", Bk. II, No. 6) — also listened to outdoors but this time on the 2nd (balcony) level. August 2nd

Mutsumi Mori, pianist, received a bachelor of music degree in both piano brian Wilsonis an active composer and conductor. Christine kovach, Ithaca College, 2002.
http://www.wyomingseminary.org/pai/faculty.htm
The majority of our faculty and conductors at the Performing Arts Institute have been working together each summer for a number of years. They continue their close association with each other for two reasons: their respect for each other and a shared passion for teaching. The faculty currently performs with symphony orchestras and/or teaches at universities, and conservatories. They have trained at The Juilliard School, The Curtis Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, Yale and The Royal Academy of Music (England), to name a few. Resident Assistants also come to PAIfrom leading universities and conservatories, where they are pursuing careers in the arts.
The following pages list faculty from the summer of 2002, most of whom will be returning to PAI in the summer of 2003. It is important that you and your teacher review the credentials and experiences of our faculty. If you would like to speak with students about our faculty, call us for phone numbers. A SIMPLE HABANA MELODY:
From When the World Was Good.
By Oscar Hijuelos.
HarperCollins, $24.95; 368 pp. ROTUND, brandy-soaked, as profligate as he is tenderhearted, Israel Levis, Cuban composer-bandleader and protagonist of Oscar Hijuelos' A Simple Habana Melody , is a victim of fate and missed connections. What might have been a trombone blast of passion for the voluptuous songbird Rita Valladeres inspiration for Levis' signature Rosas Puras never advances beyond muted romantic sputterings and avuncular hand-holding.

This is probably the most spectacular digital recording we've ever heard, both for imaging, clarity and dynamic range. It's astonishing that it was made in 1978, using the "Soundstream" system which lost out to other, large-corporately-financed systems. The repertoire is (strangely) still under-represented in the catalogue but, in recordings like these, it wouldn't matter if there were dozens of versions available! London Symphony Orchestra; Morton Gould. Citadel CTD 88130 (U.S.A.) GORDON JACOB (1895-1984): Mini Concerto for Clarinet and Strings, Concertino for Clarinet and Strings (after Tartini), Clarinet Quintet, Clarinet Trio. Resolutely tonal and Romantic in style, these pieces, even the apparently ludicrously brief Mini Concerto, display a depth of feeling that is all too often lacking in 20th-century music. There is more than a hint of English pastoral throughout, but the music never sounds like the more familiar composers associated with that phrase, except fleetingly and superficially, and there is much beauty to savor here. Warmly recommended. Charles Russo (clarinet), Premier Chamber Orchestra; David Gilbert. Premier PRCD 1052 (U.S.A.)

MAX STEINER - KING KONG: COMPLETE ORIGINAL SCORE MAX STEINER (1888-1971): King Kong: The Complete 1933 Film Score. Steiner's magnificent score rings out in all its magnificent, ominous glory in this new recording of the complete film score, made possible by extensive reconstruction and restoration using the original audio components of the film itself, the surviving full scores and the composer's own annotated sketches (the only documentary evidence for every note Steiner composed for the film). Steiner wrote for a Wagnerian sized orchestra and left the problems of reducing this mammoth score to orchestrators; this recording finally gives the music its due. Along with archival photos, movie ads and extensive musical notes, there are special tributes to Steiner from, among others, Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury and Steiner's wife Louise. Moscow Symphony Orchestra; William T. Stromberg. Marco Polo 8.223763 (Hong Kong) ALFRED NEWMAN (1900-1970): The Song of Bernadette - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Newman's score won the Academy Award in 1943 and is a richly detailed portrait of the young woman who believes she has seen the Virgin Mary. Always attempting to keep the focus on Bernadette and her inner conviction, the score is incredibly detailed and brims with narrative eloquence, pointing toward the later large-scale Biblical epics Newman was to score such as David and Bathsheba, The Greatest Story Ever Told and The Robe.
