SVU CZECHOSLOVAK SOCIETY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES MILESTONES IN THE HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY Historical Overview by Miloslav Rechcigl The Formative Years The impetus for organizing the Society came from Dr. Jaroslav Nemec of the National Library of Medicine, who became its first secretary-general. The idea began to take shape in the fall of 1956, when a Study Section ("Studijni odbor") under the chairmanship of Dr. Vaclav Mostecky, was established in the Washington, DC Chapter of the Czechoslovak National Council of America. In the fall of 1957, the Study Section sent a questionnaire to thirty-five leading Czechoslovak scholars in the United States and Western Europe, concerning the possibility of organizing an Academy or Society of Czechoslovak Arts and Sciences. The response was affirmative and in fact so enthusiastic that the Study Section immediately went ahead with the recruitment of members. By June 1958 there were already 200 members, who elected an Organizing Council ("Pripravny vybor") as their tentative representatives. Professor Vaclav Hlavaty of Indiana University was elected President, and Vratislav Busek, former Professor of Charles University, and Rafael Kubelik, the world-renowned conductor, Vice-presidents. Dr. Jaroslav Nemec was subsequently elected Secretary-General, Oldrich Cerny, Treasurer, and Ivan Herben, Press Secretary. Almost all of the organizational and administrative work during these early stages of development rested on the shoulders of Dr. Nemec. His task was made considerably easier by the enthusiastic support, energetic work, and ready counsel he received from Professor Hlavaty and Ivan Herben.

ARTIST, DAVID OCCHIPINTI PAIN ON TRIAL #1 - DR. VINEO Duration: 00:09:17 On April the 14th, the discipline committee of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons medicine's governing authority in the province issued a 10-page report in the matter of a Kingston doctor named Frank Adams. Here is the committee's conclusion: ...READING... The decision came after six days of hearings last summer and fall into the methods Dr. Adams uses to manage and control intractable pain. Later this fall, the college will decide if Dr. Adams will lose his license to practice medicine. Or to have his practice severely restricted. However the college rules, the case of Dr. Adams will have immediate and far-reaching consequences. The fear of pain in ouselves and in those we cherish, touches us at some deep atavistic level. We have used everything from prayer to tree bark to try and relieve it. And we have demanded of our doctors that whatever else they do, they take away our pain. How doctors in Canada respond to that need and how organized medicine treats those who dare to reach beyone orthodox methods to help their patients is the subject of this morning's cover story PAIN ON TRIAL The Case of Dr. Frank Adams. We will hear from Dr. Adams in a few minutes. But first, what we mean when we say "it hurts."

Opus . I've only heard the first of the three, but I have the feeling that Kubalek/Lafayette can hold their own here too. Kevin Bazzana's program notes are uncommonly detailed, and so is Dorian's recording. The sound is so warm, you'll want to take a bath in it. Raymond Tuttle Search Reviews Back to the Review Index

The Year in Review
by Randall Ware, Special Events Officer In 1995, the National Library’s Public Programs office produced more than 100 cultural events for the fourth consecutive year, and it was our most varied program ever. The Library attracted much favourable attention from the media for the quality and diversity of our programs, and it is gratifying to be able to report that attendance at our events continued to grow. As well, displays of books and other items from our collections accompanied many of the readings, and the Canadian Literature Research Service created reading lists for certain events, which were distributed at the Library and on the World Wide Web. One of the key elements of our programming is partnership: almost 80 percent of our events are produced in cooperation with a co-sponsor. Book publishers, of course, are our principal allies and we remain grateful for their commitment to sending their authors on tour and enabling us to ensure that the Library is one of their stops. We also work frequently with embassies located in Ottawa to offer concerts, readings and lectures. Among our many other partners are universities, other federal government departments, many non-government organizations and non-profit groups, and local community organizations. There are many highlights in a year and many kinds of highlights. More than 350 people came to hear
