April 2, 2000: Matthias Soucek, piano
The season's opening concert was given by a promising young pianist, playing Haydn, Chopin, Kreisler/Rachmaninov, Liszt and Brahms.
May 7, 2000: Unternehmen Friedenspfeife (Enterprise Peace Pipe), 4 recorders
A very attractive program showing the versatility of recorders and their players.
May 28, 2000: Piano Duo Eduard and Johannes Kutrowatz (four hands on the Imperial)
An overwhelmed audience listened to Schubert, Brahms and Johann Strauß.
June 3, 2000: Altenberg Trio Wien (piano trio)
Beethoven's first and last piano trios, presented by one of the leading piano trio ensembles of the world.
July 2, 2000: Mozart-Festival at Belvedere-Schlössel, Stockerau (chamber orchestra, fortepiano, old instruments)
For reasons of sufficient space for a chamber orchestra as well as the audience given in nearby Stockerau city, Walter Riemer played Mozarts Rondo K 386 and piano concerto K 488 on the fortepiano, enclosing Kreutzer's Septett op. 62 and Beethoven's Rondino WwO 25, the latter works performed dominantly by wind players, all on old instruments.
August 5, 2000: Ingeborg Baldaszti, Piano

September 8, 2002 Piano duo Eduard and Johannes kutrowatz. The pianist easilymet this high standard and the audience was enchanted.

April 14, 2002: The recital of Helmut Wildhaber (Tenor) had to be canceled because of illness of the singer. May 3, 2002: Till Fellner, piano Enthusiastic applause was the reward for the young pianist who swept the audience with his interpretation of Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata, sound jewels Olivier Messiaen's Petites esquisses d'oiseaux and Liszt's Années de Pélerinage, Premiere Année - Suisse. Unfortunately our piano refused to cooperate fully, developing a squeaking pedal that could not be fixed in even two attempts. May 25, 2002: Altenberg Trio Wien A welcome opportunity for the world famous trio to prepare for a new CD production gave us a wonderful concert for our audience, getting to know both piano trios by Camille Saint-Saëns (Trio Nr. 1 F-Major op. 18,Trio Nr. 2 e-minor op. 92). At the beginning there was Joseph Haydn, Trio B-major, Hob XV/20. June 16, 2002: Birgid Steinberger (Soprano) and Eduard Kutrowatz (Piano) The well-known member of Vienna State Opera and Volksoper performed as a moving interpreter of Lieder by Schubert, Hugo Wolf, Brahms and Mahler. June 29, 2002: Allan Fuller (Piano)

by Allan Pulker Overview Here are some October highlights: a week at a time. Early Birds: October 1-7 With October, the music season is well under way. I count 21 concerts in the first four days of October, alone, including eight midday events at seven different venues. The St. Lawrence String Quartet on October 4 at the Jane Mallett Theatre (last month's cover story) and Les Amis at the Heliconian Hall on October 6 have two interesting overlaps violinist Barry Shiffman and composer, Jonathan Berger. Shiffman, the second violinist in the St. Lawrence, plays the viola in the Oct 6 concert; Jonathan Berger has a work on the Oct 4 program, and then features as a "recreator" Oct 6. Based on a wax cylinder of Johannes Brahms himself playing the first seventeen bars of his First Hungarian Dance, Berger has created a "Disk-Klavier" reproduction of "what Brahms would have sounded like playing the whole thing." The next best thing to time travel! (And speaking of time travel, Oct 5 Sir Andrew Davis will conduct the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.) The first few days of the month are particularly bountiful at the U of T: Oct 1, the

Home January 2001 January 2000 January 1999 ... December 1997 Heitor Villa-Lobos SYMPHONY NO. 10 AMERINDIA ERNEST BLOCH (1880-1959): Macbeth. Previously only two very impressive, highly dramatic interludes from this opera were available on CD; but, here's the whole work, and it's just stunning. Sung in French, this is a powerful drama written when Bloch was only in his 20s. Both German and French influences are present in that Bloch uses leitmotifs, and the music can even sound impressionistic at times. Underlying all this are the familiar Jewish elements that would eventually dominate his style. No English text or libretto are supplied, but who needs them with music as demonstrative as this, and a story as familiar as Macbeth. French notes and libretto. 2 CDs. Jean-Philippe Lafont (baritone), Markella Hatziano (mezzo), Latvian Radio Choir, Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon Philharmonic Orchestra; Freidemann Layer. Actes Sud AT 34100 (France) CHARLES KOECHLIN (1867-1950): Le Livre de la Jungle. The composer spent almost a third of his life working on the various pieces which make up "The Jungle Book" - three songs for soloists, chorus and orchestra and four tone-poems of very varied length. This is only the second recording of the complete work (the Marco Polo omits the songs) and was captured live in 1998 and is already the only one available, due to the deletion of the RCA with David Zinman (to say nothing of the deletion of the whole RCA classical label...). This probably won't stay around long either so, if you don't know this distinctly individual, boldly forward-looking music with great dramatic sense, don't hesitate too long! 2 CDs. French texts. Iris Vermillion (mezzo), Jacque Trussel (tenor), Vincent Le Texier (baritone), Montpellier Opera Chorus, Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon Philharmonic Orchestra; Steuart Bedford. Actes Sud AT 34101 (France)

Finnish music in a nutshell
Written for Virtual Finland by Pekka Hako; music researcher, author.
Caj Bremer The strength of Finnish music lies in its originality. Unlike its neighbours Sweden and Norway, Finland never had a court that would have provided itself with musical entertainments or sponsored expensive opera productions. Instead, the roots of Finnish music go deep down into a unique national heritage. We may say without exaggeration that the national epic, the Kalevala (1835), forms the basis of all Finnish culture - including music. The most recent boom period in Finnish music began in the early 1970s, with older composers writing operas and younger composers establishing Modernism as part of the musical mainstream. Finnish music rapidly gained the international limelight. Slightly earlier, the 1960s had seen the creation of a unique system of State grants that guaranteed composers and performing artists a reasonable livelihood. Also, over two decades from the 1960s onwards, a network of music institutes, public music libraries, symphony orchestras and music festivals sprang up. The conductor class of the Sibelius Academy, which trained numerous world-class talents, also contributed to the general boom.
