Chamber Music Albuquerque 2002-2003 Season ARTISTS Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio November 3, 2002 3:00 pm Joseph Kalichstein, piano Jaime Laredo, violin Sharon Robinson, cello Since making their debut as the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio at the White House for President Carter's Inauguration in January 1977, pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson have set the standard for performance of the piano trio literature for twenty-five consecutive seasons. As one of the only chamber ensembles with all its original members, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio balances the careers of three internationally-acclaimed soloists while making annual appearances at many of the world's major concert halls, commissioning spectacular new works, and maintaining an active recording agenda. The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio's 25th Anniversary festivities began in June with the Gala Chamber Music Opening Concert at the Caramoor Music Festival, continuing the celebration at the Aspen Music Festival in July, where the Trio assumed the multiple configurations for which it has become renowned: in the complete Beethoven Trio cycle concerts, performing the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the Aspen Chamber Symphony (Jaime Laredo conducting), and with close colleagues Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Sarah Chang in an all-chamber music evening. In August, the Trio returned to the Mostly Mozart Festival, where it has performed often, for an evening of Beethoven Trios at Alice Tully Hall.

Dick Hyman
Throughout a busy musical career which got underway in the early '50's, Dick Hyman has functioned as pianist, organist, arranger, conductor and composer. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in well over one hundred albums recorded under his own name and many more in support of other artists.
Mr. Hyman's concert compositions include his Piano Concerto, Ragtime Fantasy, and Sonata for Violin and Piano. In his numerous public appearances, he has performed solo, with orchestra, with his own quintet, with cornetist Ruby Braff, and in duo-piano appearances with Derek Smith, Roger Kellaway, Ralph Sutton and the late Dick Wellstood.
In addition to his activities in the jazz and concert worlds, Mr. Hyman has had a prolific career in New York as a studio musician, and has won seven Most Valuable Player awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. For more information, click here Grant Johannesen

Ruth Laredo goes solo with a classic trio
It has been a while since pianist Ruth Laredo appeared in these parts. The last time was almost a decade ago with the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
This Sunday she's going it alone in a free solo program in Woonsocket, in a new classical series at the Stadium Theater that has already featured pianist Abbey Simon.
Although she has dropped off the local musical map, Laredo has been busy teaching, recording and performing. For the past 13 years, she has presented a series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that looks at some aspect of music history. This year she's been examining the relationship between Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn performing their music and providing a running commentary about how their lives intertwined.
It was Schumann who brought to light many Schubert scores, including his great C Major Symphony. Schumann found the scores in the attic of Schubert's brother. But it took the clout of Mendelssohn to get them published.

Renowned for her pioneering recordings of the complete solo piano music of Rachmaninoff and the complete sonatas of Scriabin, her orchestral appearances have included every major symphony orchestra in the U.S. and as touring soloist with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra in Carnegie Hall and for United Nations Day as well. Her tour of Russia and Ukraine formed part of an extensive television profile on "CBS Sunday Morning" with Charles Kuralt. A native of Bucharest, Romania, pianist Peter Takács is a legend both in the United States and abroad. From an early age, his extraordinary, pianistic proficiency earned him full scholarship at the Conservatoire Nationale de Paris, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois and the Peabody Conservatory of Music, where he completed his artistic training with Leon Fleisher. His achievements include: First Prize in the William Kapell International Piano Competition, the C.D. Jackson Award for Excellence at Tanglewood Music Center, the Kennedy Center Recital Prize from the La Gesse Foundation, and a Solo Recitalist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, enabling him to perform and record Mozart Piano Concertos, acting as both soloist and conductor. History of the Festival
Beginning with a desire to hear and play beautiful music in a refreshing summer setting away from the city, the Manchester Music Festival was formed in 1974 by Carroll Glenn, violinist, and her husband Eugene List, pianist. The couple established a concert series at the Southern Vermont Arts Center's Arkell Pavilion and founded a music school. They called their summer adventure the Southern Vermont Music Festival. In 1981, Carroll Glenn was offered a chance to play in China a remarkable opportunity for an equally remarkable musician. She had been a child prodigy at 11 the youngest student ever admitted to Juilliard. Carroll Glenn met pianist Eugene List while both were students at Juilliard. They married and toured the world together playing with major orchestras in the US, Europe, South America and the Far East. List himself was a celebrated musician who was given the honor of performing the American premiere of Shostakovitch's Piano Concerto #1 in 1935. Furthermore, List was a favorite of US presidents, especially Harry Truman. On quite a few occasions, List played at the White House and he was even summoned to perform at the Potsdam Conference for Truman, Stalin and Churchill. Since the early 1960s, the couple had visited Manchester, sometimes performing or giving master classes at the Southern Vermont Arts Center. Michael Rudiakov came to Manchester through a chance meeting with Glenn and List on the trip to China. Rudiakov, a cellist who had carved out a name for himself as a chamber musician, soloist and impresario, accepted the Lists' offer to join the Southern Vermont Festival in 1983. In 1984, the name was changed to the Manchester Music Festival and it became a not-for-profit corporation.

Ruth Laredo seems indefatigable. Not only is she one of the pre-eminent pianists in the United States, maintaining a hectic recording and concert schedule, she's also in great demand as an eloquent commentator on the arts you may well have heard her as a special arts correspondent for National Public Radio's ''Morning Edition.'' She's also an editor responsible for a multivolume edition of Rachmaninoff texts. And her guide for aspiring pianists, ''The Ruth Laredo Becoming a Musician Book,'' is sold across the country. Next Saturday night, she's somehow finding the time to launch, with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, its 1997-98 Masterworks series. Laredo will perform Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor.
