YOUNG THE LESSER-KNOWN TALENTS OF A LEGEND I n a recording career that has spanned sixty-eight years, the living jazz legend Benny Carter has played almost every musical instrument and has written for virtually every musical situation. An influential alto saxophonist, a brilliant arranger for big bands, and a key figure in the integration of the Hollywood soundtrack studios, Carter has also made a quiet yet persistent mark as a tunesmith. In the weeks surrounding his eighty-eighth birthday, last August, he gathered fourteen leading vocalists to make this last point, and the results are assembled in The Benny Carter Songbook (MusicMasters). Although Carter's playing has reflected modern developments, even his recent songwriting conveys the shapeliness and sophistication commonly identified with stage revues and movie musicals of the past. The world-weary sass that Ruth Brown imparts to "My Kind of Trouble Is You," the fragile optimism that Dianne Reeves shows on "Only Trust Your Heart," and the simple warmth that Shirley Horn finds in "A Kiss From You"to take three examplesindicate that Carter's old-fashioned strategies succeed because his melodies almost sing themselves. Pianist Alain Mallet is currently touring and recording with Paul Simon and Phil Woods, he's also worked with or produced records for The NY Voices, Jonatha Brooke, Paquito D'Rivera, Marc Cohn, Dave Samuels, Club D'Elf and Chiara Civello among others. He is a professor at Berklee College of Music. Pianist Teese Gohl has worked with Nana Vasconcelos, Sergio Brandao, Cyro Baptista, Ictus, Tiger Okoshi, George Russell, Bob Moses, Dave Stewart, and Carly Simon. He also worked as a music producer with the composer Eliot Goldenthal on feature movies such as Batman Forever, Alien III, Michael Collins, Titus Andronicus, Frida Kahlo, (last two directed by Julie Taymor), and many others. Each of the great events of this year has seemed greater than the one before. It has been a fantastic, unbelievable year. The Kurt Weill Festival took place during the terrible week of September 11. I cannot tell you how proud I am of our students, real troupers who performed two full evenings of Kurt Weill songs (a German one and an English one), in spectacular fashion. They dealt with national disaster by dedicating themselves to this positive endeavor. As Beth Carter said so eloquently, our music seemed the only thing that week that did actually make sense. Guest lecturer Susan Borwick framed the whole thing amazingly with a presentation which tied Weill and his times to our own trauma: when can music express the inexpressible? Guest clinicians Patty Martin and Dirk Weiler provided great guidance and inspiration to our student performers. In October, composer Alice Parker was in residence to work with the Meredith choral groups, who joined the Raleigh Oratorio Society in a concert of Ms. Parker’s works. It was truly inspirational to watch Ms. Parker work with the choirs and interact with students and faculty. Once again, we saw proof of the fact that great artists are often also some of the kindest, most giving persons in the world. (And she loved our choirs!)

GAYLORD CARTER The 'Flicker Fingers' Who Brought The Perfect Song to Life By Chris Elliott Excerpted from the March/April 2001 issue of the ATOS journal, Theatre Organ Gaylord Carter, whose 80-year performance career defined "theatre organist," died November 20, 2000, at age 95. One of the world's renowned silent film accompanists and best-known theatre organists, this incredible human being gave sound to silent movies and introduced whole generations to the joy of the theatre pipe organ. Observing Gaylord in action at the Orpheum Theatre in 1987, Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith wrote: "...Carter is a national treasure and ought to be designated a historical monument." The organ was Gaylord's lifelong playground, and he used it as his special effects sound stage for silent films, producing thunderous music for battles, ominous chords for villains, and trick sounds for punch lines. "At its best, the music is felt but not noticed," he once told the Los Angeles Times . "When it's right, you should lose yourself in the picture."
