The event offers the people in the region an opportunity to purchase works by well-known artists from throughout the Midwest. It also includes a silent auction and children's activities for creative fun.
The festival will be held in the interior courtyard of the Fine Arts Building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Most of the exhibiting artists will donate one piece of artwork to the silent auction and visitors to the festival can bid on items throughout the day. Funds raised by the auction will support scholarships given annually to students in the Department of Theatre and Dance, the Department of Music and the Department of Art and Design. Nearly 60 artists will display and sell artwork that includes painting, graphics, fiber, wood, jewelry, photography, sculpture and other media. Exhibitors are selected by a jury and cash prizes are given for Best of Show and Awards of Excellence. Last year's best of show was won by painter, Rita Crooks, Wausau, who has been invited to display her work again this year. The event is sponsored by the Festival of the Arts Council and the UW-SP College of Fine Arts and Communication.

UW School of Music Centennial Commissions
The 1995-1996 academic year at the UW School of Music will offer students, faculty and the entire community of music lovers an extraordinary series of concerts marking the school's 100th year. The series, known as the "Centennial Commissions," will feature six concerts, each showcasing a new work by an internationally acclaimed composer. Each composer has been commissioned to provide a work for one of the School's student or faculty ensembles. The composers are Daron Hagen, John Harbison, Libby Larsen, David Ott, Ralph Shapey and Joan Tower, all of whom will also take part in residencies at the school. The performing groups will be the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, the Concert Choir, the Symphonic Band, the Wingra Woodwind Quintet, the Pro Arte Quartet, and the Symphony Orchestra. With the orchestra, guest artist Ursula Oppens will be the soloist in a new piano concerto composed by Tower, to be performed in the Union Theater. Such massive undertakings as these could not come to pass without forward-looking creative leadership. Very soon after he assumed the directorship of the Music School four years ago, John Stevens started setting the wheels in motion for this centennial celebration; an impressive list of grants and gift funds will defray the enormous costs of the seven-month celebration. It wasn't always this way at the Music School: the climate for such far-reaching projects was markedly less favorable up through the 1950s and `60s. There were many fine musicians at Wisconsin even then, of course, but on the whole the kind of visionary leadership Stevens and the faculty are demonstrating now would scarcely have been possible 35 years ago. The School was fairly insular in outlook and on average reluctant to introduce much outside stimulation. With precious few exceptions, it was a thoroughly parochial place to study and work.

DECEMBER 2000 NUMBER 56
Rose Leaf Ragtime Club November Meeting (11/26/2000)
Reported by Gary Rametta
Hello once again!
The swell of new guests came no doubt as a result of Ryan Carter's front-page article in the San Gabriel Valley section of the Los Angeles Times. That article appeared the Thursday following our October meeting. Ryan did a great job capturing the spirit and goings-on of that afternoon's activities in his report. Pictured prominently along with the report were Ruby Fradkin, our 10-year old Wunderkind, and Phil Cannon, a recent devotee who picks classic rags with his guitar-banjo.
Gary Rametta opened up the afternoon's show at 2:30 sharp, starting out with Charles Hunter's "Tickled to Death," a fun and bouncy Tennessee folk rag that develops its ragtime feel within a variation of the march form. Gary's next piece was a new one; Joseph Lamb's posthumously-published "Firefly Rag." This is a lovely, lush piece with a nocturnal ambience. To close his set, Gary then performed Scott Joplin's "Gladiolus Rag," one of the jewels of classic ragtime.
Messrs. George McClellan and Lee Roan immediately spiced things up with duet versions of three popular tunes from the early 20th century. First was "Smiles," written in 1917 by Lee Roberts. Next was "The Little Red Barn," a 1934 composition by Joe Young. Last was "Louisville Lou" a Milton Hager tune from 1923. The gents are always enjoyable to hear, and their sheet music collection must be encyclopedic.

May 2-6, 2001 OPERA AMERICA 31ST ANNUAL CONFERENCE: E-MERGING TRADITIONS The Atlanta Opera will serve as the host company for OPERA America 31st Annual Conference: E-MERGING TRADITIONS. "The enterprising city of Atlanta, along with its growing opera company, The Atlanta Opera, seemed the perfect place to honor the rich history of opera and the exciting future that lies ahead. We plan to honor the legacy of Verdi and Bellini while we look at how technology is transforming the face of contemporary opera," stated Marc Scorca, President of OPERA America. On May 3, 9:00, Coretta Scott King will launch the Opening Session, speaking about her long-term devotion to opera and the arts. She will be introduced by Alfred Kennedy, Executive Director of The Atlanta Opera. Composer William Bolcom, whose recent operas include MCTEAGUE and A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE, both commissioned by Lyric Opera of Chicago, will present the Keynote Address. "The relationship between Bolcom and Lyric Opera of Chicago represents a creative partnership of historic dimension," OPERA America notes. "Few opera companies have made such a long-term creative commitment to a single artist." On May 4, Placido Domingo will join the conference via video feed to speak about the music of Verdi and its continuing relevance. He will be followed by a panel of producers, critics, and artists who will offer suggestions about ways the core repertoire can communicate to contemporary audiences. The panelists also will explore trends in contemporary creation and as well as the potential for the expansion of the core repertoire with works from the late 20th and early 21st century.
