Angela Lear... Angela Chopin Recordings Reviews ... Bookings For over twenty years Angela Lear has been researching the works of the Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin, checking original autograph manuscripts, annotated scores and early editions. Her discoveries have revealed many inaccuracies in modern printed editions. Angela Lear graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 1971 and during her time there she had been studying with Professor Guy Jonson who was a pupil of Tobias Matthay in London and of Alfred Cortot in Paris. After leaving the Royal Academy she studied for three years with the great pianist, Louis Kentner. It was Kentner who first brought to her attention the great discrepancies which existed in many of the published scores and encouraged her to investigate the original autograph manuscripts, travelling to Poland with her to start what has become her lifetime's work. Unlike so many researchers, Angela Lear is a very accomplished pianist and a consummate musician and is therefore able to bring to life the discoveries concerning Chopin's true intentions, which her researches have revealed. In order to do this she decided to make a series of recordings called "The Original Chopin" each one of which was to be based on at least a year's intensive investigation. Unfortunately, in this highly commercial world, there is no publicity value of work that takes the artist away from regular public performance and therefore the larger companies were not interested. A group of friends set up the non-profit making Libra Records, with the main purpose of publishing definitive recordings of Chopin's works as close to his intentions as possible. The hectic life of a popular concert pianist is not conducive to study and research and Angela Lear has turned her back on a life style which would destroy her work and degrade her performances. In doing this she has made great personal sacrifices.

Sometimes one finds magic. I did when I went to this site. Within a few seconds of the first sounds I knew I was in the world created by a real composer. Atmospheric but constructed with inner steel, Mats Wendt is clearly doing something special: music of mystery, enchantment and great beauty. Here is something extraordinary. I can't say I've listened to all 158 sections (which starts at number five because the first four are not complete yet) of this Norse cosmological 'suite' and without a menu for all of the sections I'm a little mystified at where it's going. The site itself is graphic intensive and not terribly intuitive (some menus are hidden behind the graphics, and there's little way to know which ones) but the music makes it worthwhile. Hats off... http://w1.455.telia.com/~u45503396/elvsmith/index.html
Angela Lear: Concert Pianist
Chopin is at the core of the repertoire for the piano. His music, while almost exclusively for that instrument yet reaches to cosmic realms. He is one of the greatest masters of music. UK pianist Angela Lear has spent 30 years in a study of Chopin and the results of her endeavors are available on CD and at this web site, where thankfully, we can hear entire selections. Her performance of the famous Nocturne in E flat is fascinating for the embellishments (all authentic) that she adds. I listened to the Scherzo in C sharp minor with a knowing ear (as this used to be in my repertoire) and I can tell you she plays it very well. Steely octaves and glittering passage work, Angela Lear can clearly play the piano at a very high level. Keep an eye on

Angela Lear - The Original Chopin Pianist Angela Lear Records Chopin as the Master Intended http://angelalear.tripod.com/chopin.html
The intimate and poetic nature of Chopin's music naturally lends itself to very personalized interpretations of the music by pianists - arguably more so than any other composer. This fact has resulted in recordings of Chopin's repertoire which vary dramatically from artist to artist, based on the particular interpretation of the pianist. It has also fostered a one hundred and fifty year old debate over just how to interpret Chopin's music. When we listen to a recording of Chopin's music, are we hearing the music as Chopin intended, or are we hearing how that particular pianist "reads" the music? Are we hearing Chopin or the artist who is playing his music?
Does it matter? Surely it does. How an artist enunciates a particular phrase of the music affects its meaning - just as in human speech. This fact is particularly relevant to Chopin's music because it is so lyrical, poetic, and even narrative at times. Is a particular Mazurka, for example, a whimsical trifle or a solemn tone-poem? The answer is, usually, what the individual playing it thinks it is.
Given the wide-ranging interpretations of Chopin's music in the form of recordings, we have the opportunity to seek out the "best" Chopin - "who does the best Preludes", "who does the best Ballades", etc. There are piano competitions which try to answer the question, "Who plays Chopin the best?" But what about the question, "How did Chopin want his music played?" - which ultimately begs the question, "What did Chopin mean - what was he saying?"

[* featured on Vol.3 'The Original Chopin' series] THE ORIGINAL CHOPIN - VOLUME 5 NOW AVAILABLE We feel it a great privilege that to introduce the recording we have the man whose experience in the art of playing the piano is probably greater than that of any living pedagogue. He heard all the great pianists of his era and met and knew many of these artists. He was himself a. very distinguished broadcasting pianist and only the war, and to a lesser extent the BBC, robbed us of many performances by this fine artist. His deliberations on this record increases its value as a document on the playing of Chopin and makes it unique. He allies a vast experience with a very shrewd judgement of the merit of the artists he heard and never allows sentiment cloud his incisive assessments. His observations on the current musical scene are both penetrating and scathing.

Mr Moss: you (and the others) are quite right that Ms Lear never specifically mentions Horowitz—or, for that matter, any other pianist. She simply says “some performers” or “most interpreters” do thus-and so—without naming names. So, having no specific pianist to defend, I picked Horowitz as an example of someone who was well known for taking liberites with the score. The rest of your response is non-responsive, non-specific blather about truth and beauty. Mr. Disney also hides behind the vague “many modern interpretations”—please, name names! To say that Ms Lear is not appreciated in her own time is silly; every Chopin site on the web (including this one) is positively swooning over her. Thank you to M. Ben-ayad for the only substantive response to my concerns; the lecture-recitals sound fascinating. Did she name names then, or were they simply anonymous “virtuosi”? I’m sorry if I seem fixated on this, but she levels very serious charges in claiming (perhaps correctly) that her interpretations are superior to someone else’s, and whoever that someone else is, he/she deserves the chance to be defended.
I was not aware of Chopin’s ‘written out rubato’ in the mazurkas—can you give me some examples of pieces and/or editions? I was specifically referring in the mazurkas to the practice of making some beats in the bar quicker than others, giving the piece is characteristic lilt.
