Glazier Does Gershwin July 4th is all the excuse I need to write about American composers or performers. This month I can do both simultaneously thanks to the superb recording of unusual Gershwin repertoire by the gifted 33-year-old American pianist Richard Glazier. The compact disc is called "Gershwin: Remembrance and Discovery," and it's on the Centaur label (CRC 2271). This CD is distributed by Qualiton Imports, though in this case it is "imported" from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a place where, it seems, both modern politicians and classical Centaurs live. Of course there is no more American composer than George Gershwin. It would be hard to find a compatriot who didn't love his music. He was the first highly successful cross-over composer, writing long-form "classical" music that instantly became as popular as his most popular tunes. In my view, Gershwin was one of the greatest tunesmiths in all music history, knocking out one gorgeous, unforgettable melody after another - an American Schubert, although, unlike poor Franz, very much appreciated in his own time. As you can imagine, I have quite a collection of Gershwin CDs, so it's hard for any solo pianist to come up with repertoire that isn't already on my shelves. But Glazier has managed to do this, and do it with such feeling, I knew on first hearing that here was a performer who loved Gershwin's music at least as much as I do.

The main thing wrong with it is Clifford Odets ridiculously pretentious, stilted, heavy-handed, and ultimately nonsensical script. But that doesnt mean you cant watch this and enjoy it given the proper (or rather, improper, irreverent) attitude. Certain of Odets bizarre unintentional non-sequitors are hilarious. The incongruity of some of Oscar Levants comic ad-libs are a treat though just one Marx brother is not enough. Garfield never learned to fake playing the violin sufficiently; so one violinist was enlisted to finger his violin and another to bow it. October, 1998 Edition The Stock Market Blues, Remembering The Great Depression October marks the 69th anniversary of the great crash of 1929 that plunged the country into a massive financial depression that eventually spread to the world and changed the financial markets forever. It is hard to believe that a condition that occured so long ago still affects our lives today. As it is, the market seems always jittery in October, whether that is due to continuing fear over seventy years or just the nature of financial cycles, who knows. Of course the great depression also affected music. The euphoric music of the late twenties turned to more somber tunes and as the depression deepened, music turned to messages of hope and future happiness to divert attention from the reality of the times. This month ParlorSongs takes a musical tour of the depressuion with depression era music. Some of the greatest music of our time emerged from this deeply emotional and trying period.
