Music reviews: John Michael Montgomery, The Duke Robillard Band, Jenny Lin, Rachel Z Trio
October 8, 2000 COUNTRY John Michael Montgomery "Brand New Me" (Atlantic) Brand-new stuff? Not really. Montgomery sticks mostly to the mix of contemporary country and twangy pop that made him a star in the early '90s. There's a life-affirming anthem ("Brand New Me"), a barroom rocker ("That's What I Like About You") and, of course, a big love ballad ("Even Then.") The only thing that's different and we don't mean different in a good way is "The Little Girl," already at No. 5 on the country singles chart. This weeper about a child who endures the murder-suicide of her drug- and alcohol-abusing parents is a little too reminiscent of those maudlin story songs that tarnished country music's image back in the '60s. Otherwise, this is mostly serviceable, mostly radio-ready fare. It's not bad, but there's nothing here to rival "Life's a Dance" or "I Swear." By Greg Crawford, Free Press staff writer BLUES The Duke Robillard Band "Explorer" (Shanachie) In founding Roomful of Blues a band that never received proper credit for jump-starting the jump-blues craze then replacing Jimmie Vaughan in the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Duke Robillard proved nothing if not adaptable.

Chinoiserie was assembled by an enterprising Taiwanese-American pianist who recorded her selection in February 2000 for the Chinese New Year, Year of the Dragon . It makes for an entertaining thematic sequence played with a light touch and what I would describe as relaxed virtuosity - pianism which makes light of difficulties and never allows the tone to harden. The pentatonic scale is rarely far away from the thoughts of the dozen and one composers represented (the extra one is a specially composed encore by Jacqueline Waeber-Diaz, recorded for the first time). Many of the pieces are (or have been in the past) popular, such as Cyril Scott's

The Copyleft concept:
I first came across the term "Copyleft" in "Le Monde Diplomatique" about two years ago
and found the idea intriguing. It seems to originate in the world of software, but
clearly has implications in every area of "spiritual property."
But here is how I understand it, in a nutshell: anyone can copy my music (those pieces
that are not already published, that is) as long as they identify the composer, don't
claim authorship themselves, and allow others freely to make copies of their copies.
I think that this is the best way for the music to get around. I don't think publishers
are very useful in this, and may even make it more difficult; and I don't particularly want to be a publisher myself.

iaw: Can you give us more information on your family - your parents, your siblings, your mentor, and your teachers?
Jenny Lin: My father was a surgeon; he passed away three years ago. He loved music and taught himself violin so he could teach others and put himself through medical school. My mother later became his assistant in his medical practice. When my mother was pregnant with me, he would play classical music for her (for the baby, he said.)
When my parents were trying to decide which instrument I should play, my father insisted that I play the piano. He said that a girl should not play the violin because she will get an ugly mark on the neck. He also said that with the piano, one could immediately make a pretty decent sound right away. But with the violin, it would take a while before one can make a decent sound. I have a younger brother who also loves the music. He plays the violin quite well, but keeps it as a hobby. I had many piano teachers and everyone has contributed enormously to where I am today. I am grateful to all of them.

Tuesday, February 5, 2002 E-mail us Home Tuesday, February 5, 2002 On-line music guide gives rave review to Taiwan pianist Published: February 5, 2002
Source: The China Post aiwan-born pianist Jenny Lin's second recording release for BIS, Ruth Crawford Seeger Piano Works , has been described on ClassicsToday.com as "a 75-minute-long program that combines both revealing scholarship and care in repertoire selection with musicianship of the highest caliber."
Lin's first album Chinoiserie was "entertaining and amusing," wrote critic David Hurwitz. This latest release scored with "a program that's substantially and historically as important" as the first.
Ruth Crawford Seeger, one of the first significant American woman composers, represents the progressive school in the first decades of the last century. She is recognized not only as an ethnomusicologist but also as an expert on American folksong.
This particular album of completely original piano works highlights "the composer's achievement whole and in all its variety."
Compared to previous recordings of some of the selections, "Lin's performances came out equal or better in every case," according to Hurwitz.
