8 June - Finding myself in North Carolina, I tried to contact a friend or two. I got through to Judy Tseng. I knew her years ago from the internet and from her years in DC.
She invited me to a social gathering of the Raleigh-Durham chapter of NAAAP (Nat'l. Ass'n. of Asian American Professionals), of which she's (chapter) president.
Judy and her husband, Andrew Chin (?), do an Asian American show for a local community access cable tv channel. (Either Channel 8 (Durham) or 10 (Raleigh), or maybe both.) The program is called, "Asian Focus." And they interviewed me about this, here, website (AAMP!itude) for their show. I'm afraid I didn't look that good on camera, from what little playback I saw. (So you potential viewers out there, consider yourselves to have been warned!) Although, I imagine it will be repeated over the course of the ensuing months (probably at unusual hours), so viewers might be able to get used to my odd screen presence. (That is, if Judy and Andrew decide to use the material.) And afterwards, we all watched part of the Stanley Cup hockey game between the Detroit Red Wings and Carolina Hurricanes (being played at ESA in Raleigh). 15 June - There was a free concert tonight by singer/songwriter Tom Prasada-Rao at a local outdoor amphitheater (in Catonsville, MD), so I decided to take advantage of it. I've known about him for several years, but this was my first time seeing him onstage.

ROCK 'N' ROLL RECORDING DEAL STEERS STANFORD GRADUATE AWAY FROM HIGH-TECH FIELD
By Marian Liu
Mercury News
Pianist Vienna Teng says pursuing a career in music is the first rebellious thing she's done. This second-generation Chinese-American just handed in her resignation to Cisco, recently trading in her engineering career for rock 'n' roll. She had worked there since graduating from Stanford in 2000. ``I just quit my day job,'' says Teng, who is touring the West Coast with Emm Gryner, Annie Lin and Jenny Choi. ``My parents are happy that at least I'm an intelligent rock star with literate lyrics, not ones they can't understand,'' the 23-year-old San Jose native says, chuckling. ``They are happy for me but worry as any parent would about my financial security.'' Teng's interest in music started early. While visiting friends' houses as a child, she would always hammer at the keys. Her parents ``took the hint,'' she says, and enrolled her in piano lessons when she was 5. ``They didn't force it on me at all, and they never scolded me into practicing,'' Teng says of her parents, who are immigrants from Taiwan.

While we wait to see if "Dubya" manages to unite Donkey and Elephant, we will have to content ourselves with music in which there is some kind of tentative "coalition" between styles. Two discs jumped out at me as superlative examples of such blending: Mark Kuss's chamber music , on Gasparo, and Martin Bresnick's two-volume Opere Della Musica Povere , on CRI. The title of Kuss's "American Tryptich," for string quartet and tape, recalls Schuman's "New England Tryptich," but the comparison ends there: this is the cynical, commercialized America of Generation X. Martin Bresnick's approach is far less in-your-face. Instead, he weaves together minimalism, neo-romanticism, serialism, references to early American hymn tunes and Baroque practices in twelve interrelated pieces. Also interesting is the electronic music of Larry Kucharz , which represents, in his own words, a marriage between "austere minimalism" and "consonant harmonies and gestures from the Western Choral Classical Music Tradition." Nine of his pieces can be found on a new self-produced disc entitled ComputerChoral Green Prints.

Jenny Lin Summer Youth Concert
The concert was today! um...yesterday. Well, started at 7pm on the 27th of July, 2001 we had the concert at Neighborhood Church. It went pretty well and many people enjoyed it. Our Master of Ceremonies was Mike Morgan, the conductor of the Oakland Symphony, so it was pretty cool. Today I learned that Ben Draper can sing (j/k) and that Bach's Air on G String is not actually played on the G string nor is it in the key of G. The coordinators' number was good too (according to what other people said) but we kinda messed up toward the end ^_^;...whoops. heh.
The day before was dress rehersal. That morning, I went to Gov, as usual, and the teacher made us each talk about the project we were turning in. The project was to find two news stories and see and read a TV and a paper version of the story and compare the two forms of media. Almost everyone did one of their topics on the Pope telling Bush about stem-cell research. Anyway, Florence and I had both stayed up until about 2:30am doing it the night before and then waking up early to finish it, so I wasn't too awake for most of the talking. After gov, I went home, took a half hour nap (I reeeaaaalllly needed it this time) and then got ready to go to Canyon Middle school to help move chairs, music stands, and equiptment over to Neighborhood church. See, all our rehersals are at Canyon Middle School, but the performance was at Neighborhood and they don't let us use their chairs, so we have to bring all our own stuff. And those chairs are heavy! I could at most carry a stack of four, but for the most part carried stacks of three...after awhile I got tired and was down to two...and my arms are still kinda sore from carrying them all. One person I met there, Melinda (sp?) was really strong...she could carry 4 of them easily and did it over and over againI was only able to pull off the stack of four thing once. There was also this guy there that could carry five...O_O. wow. I was impressed ^_^.

Concert displays violinist's talent By Ayall Sagi
Staff Writer create a massive composition of music from such a small musical instrument. Pianist Benjamin Loeb accompanied Lin, and the talent of each individual magnified the other's. The evening started with a piece from Bela Bartok, "First Rhapsody for violin and piano," where Lin vigorously moved to the sound of the music. Playing Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir d'un lieu cher," highlighted Lin's broad ability to play any type of pace. The song began with a slow soft solo and worked up to a fast high-pitch climax, only to come back down slow and soft once again. The audience stared in amazement as Lin managed to regurgitate the memorized pieces perfectly. Though the violinist was half the age of the average audience member, he played with the talent of a musician who has been practicing for a lifetime. Lin's facial expressions showed the audience how emotional the music was, as his fingers swayed up and down the neck of the violin and his hand aggressively controlled the bow. Playing with such a vigorous attitude caused the notes to burst out and fill the silent room.

June 2, 1999 Wednesday Nights at the Philadelphia Museum of Art look "Toward the Millennium" from July through December, with the first Wednesday evening of each month offering a musical and artistic review of the years from 1950 to 2010! This decade-by-decade celebration is just part of an exciting mix of festivities offered every Wednesday Night from summer through fall 1999. The centennial countdown (which began in January 1999 with a visit to the 1890s) continues on July 7, with a look at the '50s: Bill Turner (lead guitarist of the legendary Bill Haley and the Comets) rocks with his Trio, Elvis tribute-artist Mark Reno conjures the King, Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall star in Written on the Wind The Graduate (1967) on the big screen with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, and "Art Goes Pop" in a Gallery Talk. First Wednesdays in September, October and November will time-travel from the 1970s through the '90s.
