REVIEW Wed 30 June 1999 - Colston Hall, Bristol For this very special concert, the BCO joined forces with the choirs of Colston's Girls' School to perform in aid of the charity BRACE (Bristol Research into Alzheimer's and Care of the Elderly. The event was generously supported by The Needham Cooper Charitable Trust and the pharmaceutical company Eisai. The programme was: Rossini Overture - The Barber of Seville Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 "Emperor" (Soloist: You-Chiung Lin Dukas Bizet Highlights from Carmen - with Penelope Davies, Stephen Foulkes, and the choirs of Colston's Girls' School Fiery finish to a classy concert " "The Barber of Seville wit and sparkle" " the prodigious Emperor Concerto needs a soloist who is both nimble and powerful, with the ability to show feelings of solemnity and jollity. In the following year, he was invited to study at the Leicestershire School of Music on the Special Music A Level Course; during which time he studied with Jack Brymer before going to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he was under the tutorship of Joy Farrall and Thea King and gained a Bachelor of Music degree (Hons) in 1996. He has also studied with Sjef Douwes at the Royal Conservertorium for Music and Dance in The Hague, Holland, and obtained a Certificate of Advanced Performance in 1999. Nicholas has appeared in masterclasses with Walter Boeykens, John Reynolds among others. In 1995, the Britten-Pears School offered Nicholas a full scholarship to study and perform on the Wind Chamber Music Course. He appeared in the Contemporary Chamber Music Course at the Dartington Summer School in 1999 and took part in performances with established musicians, including Mozart’s Magic Flute in a special arrangement by pianist Joanna MacGregor. As a concerto soloist, Nicholas Shipman has played a wide range of repertoire with several orchestras including the Bristol Concert Orchestra, the Corinthain Chamber Orchestra, the Croydon Symphony Orchestra (as a result of winning te Orchestra's Soloist Award), the Stamford Chamber Orchestra, the Reading Symphony Orchestra, the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, the Leicester University Baroque Orchestra and the Guildhall Sinfonietta. As a chamber musician, he has given many recitals in a number of groups such as the Aries Ensemble and the Nyame Wind Quintet, throughout England, France and Holland. He has also participated in broadcasts for BBC Radios and for Dutch National Radio from the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has recenty released a CD of Romantic chamber music by Reinecke, Schubert and Brahms.
