Aug. 27, 2001 Weis Center Events presents four series: Reverberations!, Special Effects!, Grace Notes! and Preludes! According to Bill Boswell, director of cultural events at Bucknell, each series is special. "Emphasizing the venue’s configuration as an acoustically amazing concert hall, the Reverberations! series features major and exceptional classical music events: the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, A Scottish Christmas, Orchestre de Bretagne, Paavali Jumppanen on piano, and the Academy of Ancient Music," said Boswell. "The Special Effects! series offers jazz, dance, and theatre including the classics and the latest, humor and heartbreak, political comment and stunning beauty. "Through the generosity of donors to the Weis Center and the Bucknell Association for the Arts, the free series of chamber music events, Grace Notes!, continues into its fifth year, and the newest series of talks and lecture-demonstrations by the artists, a free Thursday night series called Preludes!, is in its fourth year," he said. Reserved seat tickets to most events in the first two series, Reverberations! and Special Effects! are $20; two in the spring are $25. The remaining two series are free and seats are not reserved.

Bringing the Music
to Amelia Island and Amelia Island to the Music
The inaugural year of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival was a stunning success! The performances were stellar, the venues charming, and the audience captivated. Beyond these resounding achievements, the festival organizers managed another feat that reveals the true brilliance in their design: they not only brought chamber music to our island, they brought our island out to the music. Many of us have had opportunities to listen to chamber music before, whether in concert halls, private receptions, or if we’re lucky, in a beautiful cathedral somewhere in Europe, but the chamber music performed here during the festival fortnight was unique in its island-influenced twists and turns: venues were chosen for their seating capacity and acoustics, but the very spirit of the local venues seemed to infuse the music and inspire the musicians. From the porch of Front and Centre at the marina to the Ritz-Carlton, Fort Clinch and the Palace Saloon, local landmarks were not only musical backdrops, but influenced the selection of composer, piece, mood, dress, and event orchestration. In sum, our friends and neighbors who worked so hard to organize this festival never overlooked the “Amelia Island” in the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Our hats are off to all who contributed their time and energy so generously to this spectacular new event. Here are some of the highlights:

Calvin's January Series features nationally known speakers, performing artists
Last modified at 5:11 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, 1998
GRAND RAPIDS With the holiday season coming to a close, January usually ends up being a month of hibernation, but for people who want to expand their understanding of major issues or who want to listen to national and international performing artists, Calvin College has a solution. Starting Jan. 8 and continuing through Jan. 28, Calvin will bring leading speakers and performing artists to Grand Rapids as part of its annual January Series. The series of lectures, concerts and theatrical performances has become a popular event throughout West Michigan, and is free of charge. Now in its 11th year, the January Series of Calvin College will offer speakers who present an insider's view of the Bosnian conflict, the ethical implications of genetic cloning, how history has shaped modern China, the future of science, the status of American families, a different look at feminism and the impact of computers on our psyche and our society. In the performing arts, this year's series includes world-class musicians and a highly acclaimed Christian drama group.
