Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Raiding, 22 October 1811; died Bayreuth, 31 July 1886). He was taught the piano by his father and then Czerny (Vienna, 1822-3), establishing himself as a remarkable concert artist by the age of 12. In Paris he studied theory and composition with Reicha and Paer; he wrote an opera and bravura piano pieces and undertook tours in France, Switzerland and England before ill-health and religious doubt made him reassess his career. Intellectual growth came through literature, and the urge to create through hearing opera and especially Paganini , whose spectacular effects Liszt eagerly transferred to the piano in original works and operatic fantasias. Meanwhile he gave lessons and began his stormy relationship (1833-44) with the (married) Countess Marie d'Agoult. They lived in Switzerland and Italy and had three children. He gave concerts in Paris, maintaining his legendary reputation, and published some essays, but was active chiefly as a composer (

Franz Liszt
Admittedly the greatest pianist in the annals of music, and a composer whose status in musical literature still forms a debatable question, b. at Raiding, Hungary, 22 October, 1811; d. at Bayreuth, Germany, 31 July, 1886. His musical precocity was early recognized by his parents, and his first teacher was his father, Adam Liszt, a musical amateur of rare culture. His first public appearance at Oedenburg at the age of nine was so startling a character, that several Hungarian magnates who were present at once assumed the financial responsibilities of his further musical education. Taken to Vienna by his father, who devoted himself exclusively to the development of his talented child, he studied the piano for six years with Czerny, and theory and composition with Salieri and Randhartinger. His first public appearance in Vienna (1 Jan., 1823) proved a noteworthy event in the annals of music. From Beethoven The result of this environment led to the unfortunate alliance (1834-44) with the Countess d'Agoult (Daniel Stern). The fruit of it was three children - a son who died early, Blandina, who became the wife of Emile Ollivier, Minister of Justice to Napoleon III Beethoven monument at Bonn (1845), are but two striking examples. Having reached the pinnacle of success and fame as a pianist, he now concluded to abandon the career of a virtuoso, to devote his time and energy to creative work and the public fostering of higher musical ideals.

Franz Liszt
The Hungarian pianist and composer Franz Liszt is regarded as the founder of the solo piano recital. Many people consider Liszt as the greatest pianist of all time.
Liszt already left his native country at an early age. In Vienna he was given theory lessons by Salieri, the teacher and great competitor of Mozart. In 1823 he moved to Paris. Paris held an enormous attraction for all kinds of artists, both visual artists and musicians and composers. In 1836 the young Liszt won a piano competition and this meant the start of a long and successful career.
For a very long time his fame as a pianist was greater than his fame as a composer.
Liszt toured across Europe until 1847. There were long line-ups at the entrance of the concert halls if Franz Liszt gave a concert. One of Liszt's specialties was transcribing melodies of other composers. For example, the piano virtuoso could play extremely difficult improvisations of opera melodies which were popular in those days. From 1847 he received financial support and protection from Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, whom he had met during a Russian concert trip. She remained his closest and most influential companion for the rest of his life. Now Liszt could dedicate himself completely and without worries to composing. In Weimar Liszt started a training course for young pianists and composers. He was an idealist: many of his pupils were given free lessons.

Liszt made his public debut when he was nineteen years old. Soon afterwards prince Esterhazy heard him and was much impressed. Funds were raised for a serious musical education and Liszt went to Vienna to study composition with Salieri and piano with Czerny. After two years he was set to pursue his studies at the conservatory in Paris, but Cherubini, then the director of that institution, refused to admit him because he was a foreigner. After a further private eduction he played at the houses of rich families and in 1824 he made his debut in London. He caused a sensation and soon played at Drury Lane and before George IV.
The experience of seeing him perform usually put his audiences in Paris in a state ecstasy and when in 1830 he met Paganini, Berlioz and Chopin, they inspired him to exploit his romantic spirit and to find his own style as a composer.
The duchess d'Agoult left her husband in 1833 to follow Liszt and their liaison resulted in three children: Blandine, Cosima and Daniel. They separated in 1839. Under her writer's name Daniel Stern, Marie D'Agoult published the novel "Nélida", relating her relationship with Liszt. He probably never forgave her for doing so. Among Liszt's many other affairs with women was the one with Lola Montez, ending in Liszt locking Montez into a hotel room and running away himself.

Liszt originated the symphonic poem, and although he wrote symphonies, such as the Faust Symphony (1857), most of his orchestral pieces, including and Mazeppa (both 1854), are symphonic poems. In his Sonata in B Minor (1853) he developed the technique of transformation of themes, which completely altered the concept of sonata construction. This technique, together with his chromatic harmony, strongly influenced both Wagner and Richard Strauss. For the piano Liszt composed prolifically in addition to transcribing many works of other composers. His most outstanding works for the piano include (c. 1850), are characterized by lyrical, romantic sentiment; many of his later compositions are somber in tone, full of dissonance and unusual harmonic effects that foreshadow 20th-century music.

FRANZ JOSEPH LISZT
Born: October 22, 1811. Raiding, Hungary
Died: July 31, 1886. Bayreuth, Germany
In his own words...

"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason... Music presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul." Hungarian pianist, composer and conductor. Lizst was an innovator in his piano and orchestral works, and created new approaches to form.
Franz Liszt embodied all of the great ambitions of the Romantic era, and many of its contradictions. His life spanned three generations of Romantic composers. In his early life, he was an extravagant virtuoso, the darling of the ladies, and a creator of new and adventurous music. In his old age, he turned to the church, becoming a priest, writing sacred music, and championing the music of a new generation.
Liszt was born in Hungary, where his father was in the employ of a wealthy family. His early talent in music was rewarded by the support of a group of Hungarian nobles who subsidized his studies in Paris. There he became part of an important circle of artists, writers and musicians that included

Hungarian Rhapsodies, for piano (1846-1885)
symphonic poem (1848)
Listz was a prolific composer of symphonic works, chamber music, sacred and secular choral works, piano music, organ music, and songs. Listz also did musicians a great service by transcribing numerous great orchestral works for piano. These include Beethoven's symphonies 5, 6, and 7 and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Other Information: Please note: Liszt's birthplace of Doborjan, Hungary is now known as Raiding, Austria. After World War I, Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory and 60% of its population as the result of the Trianon Treaty of 1920. In a recent article, entitled "Bad Treaty That Won't Go Away," concert pianist Dr. Balint Vazsonyi wrote "Of Hungary's four greatest composers, all born in Hungary of course, only Zoltan Kodaly's birthplace remains [in Hungary]. On today's maps, it appears as if Franz Liszt had been born in Austria,Erno Dohnanyi in Slovakia, and Bela Bartok in Romania. On Bartok's birthday, the Hungarian delegation, wishing to lay a wreath, was turned back at the Romanian border." Many thanks to D.K. Bognar, editor of Hungarians in America

Liszt, Franz Hungarian-born pianist and composer, founder of the solo piano recital and perhaps the greatest pianist of all time, as well as one of the important composers of the 19th century.
Career
From 1839 to 1847 Liszt toured the Old World from Lisbon to Moscow and from Dublin to Istanbul. He rose to a fame surpassing that of Paganini. In 1847, however, he abandoned his career as a virtuoso, rarely playing in public again. The same year he met the Russian princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, who remained his closest, most influential companion for the rest of his life. From 1848 to 1861 he was musical director at the grand ducal court at Weimar, giving performances of works by Berlioz, Wagner, and others, as well as his own.
Departing from Weimar in 1861, Liszt for nearly ten years resided chiefly in Rome, where he studied theology and became a secular cleric. After 1871, dividing his time between Rome, Weimar, and Budapest, he continued to conduct, teach, and compose and to promote the music of Wagner. He died in Bayreuth, Germany, on July 31, 1886, during the Wagner Festival there.
Achievements
Liszt was one of the most remarkable personalities of his time. Aside from his achievements as pianist and conductor, Liszt taught more than 400 pupils, turned out some 350 compositions, and wrote or collaborated on 8 volumes of prose, not counting his correspondence. Certain writers have unjustly maligned his character. Despite his frailties, he was a man of noble aspirations and goodwill, of humility and remarkable generosity. This last trait may be seen in his more than 200 piano arrangements and transcriptions of works by other composers, whose music he wished to advance.

Franz Liszt to Marie d'Agoult
One evening in late 1832, or early the next year, the young Hungarian pianist Franz Liszt arrived at the home of a fashionable aristocrat, the Marquise La Vayer. There he met Marie d'Agoult, a 27 year old countess, icily beautiful, but unhappily married and the mother of two young daughters. In her Memoirs, Marie described the man she saw,
"...a tall figure, excessively thin, a pale face with great sea-green eyes in which glistened swift flashes of light like waves catching the sunlight...features at once suffering and powerful."
Their meeting began 10 years of passion, joy, and bitterness for them both. Liszt's letter, written sometime in 1834 and reproduced here, captures the conflicting emotions that later consumed them.
Marie, intelligent and sophisticated, was
"six inches of snow covering twenty feet of lava,"
as a contemporary put it. She came from a family of wealthy bankers with a history of wild liaisons and mental instability. Despairing of finding a husband she liked among those her family thought acceptable, she simply decided to take the next one they offered. The comte Charles d'Agoult (1790-1875), a war-wounded army officer, was 15 years her senior, kind, and self-effacing to the point of invisibility. realizing how different Marie was from him, he offered her freedom from the marriage, should she ever want it. The 21 year old Liszt seemed to offer her a reason for accepting the generous offer.
Soon Marie and Liszt were meeting regularly. As lovers they had much to offer each other: for Liszt, the security of Marie's wealth, the glitter of her connections, and the intimate and loving audience an artist craves; and for Marie, possession of a man who captivated everybody, a genius for her to inspire. In Europe, rich wives often took lovers. That her lover was a musician, a paid servant of the salons from some obscure village n Hungary, added drama to scandal. It broke not only the bonds of marriage but the boundaries of class as well.

Nosikova, who teaches piano at the UI School of Music, will play "The Second Year: Italy" from Liszt's "Annees de Pelerinage" (Years of Pilgrimage). Her recital will be free and open to the public. Franz Liszt was one of the greatest pianists, and most influential musicians, of the 19th century. Displaying both an astonishing technique and an extravagant personality, he created a sensation in his performances. One of the first musical super-stars, he was largely responsible for the ideal of the flamboyant virtuoso. He was also an important and original composer who wrote orchestral tone poems, songs and sacred choral music in addition to his many difficult virtuoso show pieces for piano. Liszt worked on the "Annees de Pelerinage" almost constantly throughout his life. The first pieces were published as early as 1836, when the composer was 25 years old, and the final book was published in 1883, three years before Liszt's death. Thus it is the only work that spans his lifetime, from his years of study in Paris, to his years as a traveling virtuoso, and his later years in Weimar and Rome. In its entirety, the "Annees de Pelerinage" is considered a musical self-portrait that covers many aspects of Liszt's personality.
