From 1839 to 1847 Liszt toured the Old World from Lisbon to Moscow and from Dublin to Istanbul. He rose to a fame surpassing that of Paganini. In 1847, however, he abandoned his career as a virtuoso, rarely playing in public again. The same year he met the Russian princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, who remained his closest, most influential companion for the rest of his life. From 1848 to 1861 he was musical director at the grand ducal court at Weimar, giving performances of works by Berlioz, Wagner, and others, as well as his own. Departing from Weimar in 1861, Liszt for nearly ten years resided chiefly in Rome, where he studied theology and became a secular cleric. After 1871, dividing his time between Rome, Weimar, and Budapest, he continued to conduct, teach, and compose and to promote the music of Wagner. He died in Bayreuth, Germany, on July 31, 1886, during the Wagner Festival there.

Liszt, Franz [Ferenc] Born: Raiding, 22 Oct 1811
Died: Bayreuth, 31 July 1886
Nationality: Hungarian composer and pianist
He was taught the piano by his father and then Czerny (Vienna, 1822-3), establishing himself as a remarkable concert artist by the age of 12. In Paris he studied theory and composition with Reicha and Paer; he wrote an opera and bravura piano pieces and undertook tours in France, Switzerland and England before ill-health and religious doubt made him reassess his career. Intellectual growth came through literature, and the urge to create through hearing opera and especially Paganini, whose spectacular effects Liszt eagerly transferred to the piano in original works and operatic fantasias. Meanwhile he gave lessons and began his stormy relationship (1833-44) with the (married) Countess Marie d'Agoult. They lived in Switzerland and Italy and had three children. He gave concerts in Paris, maintaining his legendary reputation, and published some essays, but was active chiefly as a composer ("Années de pèlerinage"). To help raise funds for the Bonn Beethoven monument, he resumed the life of a travelling virtuoso (1839-47); he was adulated everywhere, from Ireland to Turkey, Portugal to Russia. In 1848 he took up a full-time conducting post at the Weimar court, where, living with the Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, he wrote or revised most of the major works for which he is known, conducted new operas by Wagner, Berlioz and Verdi and, as the teacher of Hans von Bülow and others in the German avant-garde, became the figurehead of the "New German school." In 1861-9 he lived mainly in Rome, writing religious works (he took minor orders in 1865); from 1870 he journeyed regularly between Rome, Weimar and Budapest. He remained active as a teacher and performer to the end of his life.

The transformations may be in the melody itself, in its accompaniment, in its modulation to other keys, or all of these at once.

Philadelphia Doylestown Atlantic City Local Events Yellow Pages Discussion Boards Back to Home ... Entertainment Wednesday, Apr 02, 2003 Music Posted on Sun, Feb. 02, 2003 Meet tender Franz Liszt, upon his deathbed Most composers aren't people you'd want to meet, because they're so not what you want them to be. Meeting J.S. Bach sounds like the chance of a lifetime, until you hear of his reputation as a street brawler: Say the wrong thing and you might get slugged. Then there's Richard Wagner. You'd board an airplane to hear his operas, but if you saw this notorious bigot on the street, he's the one you'd like to smack. Now, we all have a chance to meet, more or less, one of the most glamorous composers in history - Franz Liszt. The Death of Franz Liszt (Cornell University Press, 224 pages, $29.95) brings you into the closest possible proximity to this much idolized pianist, thanks to a detailed diary kept by his pupil and caregiver, one Lina Schmalhausen. The closer you get to Liszt, the more you admire him as a singular example of one whose talent and fame spawned generosity and wisdom in a world ruled by self-serving pettiness.

October 22 ~  The Artist's Destiny Liszt: Final Years S o r r o w f u l and great is the artist's d e s t i n y ~ Franz Liszt Born on this day in Raiding, Hungary, composer Franciscus Liszt (1811-1886) was considered the greatest pianist of his time. Known for revolutionary interpretations and dramatic showmanship, the bravura musician invented the symphonic tone poem, and was the first to perform a solo recital. "Bach is the foundation of piano playing, Liszt the summit," praised pianist Ferruccio Busoni. "The two make Beethoven possible." Pianist Felix Mendelssohn agreed that Liszt played with "a degree of virtuosity and complete finger independence and a thorough musical feeling that can scarcely be equaled." A child prodigy who studied with Mozart' s infamous friend Antonio Salieri, Liszt was a friend of writer Victor Hugo and inspired in 1831 by a passionate performance by Niccolo Paganini at the Paris Opera House. The violinist's brilliance consumed Liszt with the desire for musical showmanship and perfection. "My mind and fingers have worked like the damned," wrote the gifted and charismatic Liszt in 1932. Franz Liszt: The ultimate Romantic 1811-1886
The stadium crowd is restless, and begins to chant the name of the superstar musician with whom they've come to howl. A spotlight cuts its way onto the dark stage, and, the crowd roaring, into the light bounds the glitzily dressed superstar - Franz Liszt. Ken Russell's intentionally tasteless 1975 film ``Lisztomania' outraged film critics and music lovers, but it did serve a useful purpose. The movie observed Liszt, the 19th century's most popular, virtuosic and daring pianist-composer, in terms of a 20th-century rock star. It may have been a rotten film, but it recognized that Liszt, the ultimate Romantic artist, was a man who would have fit comfortably into our own era. Lisztomania was the term actually used in the 1840s to describe the public idolatry of this phenomenal pianist. In the early 1820s he had begun touring Europe as a child prodigy. Later, unlike Mozart, he was able to parlay his adolescent popularity into a wildly successful adult career. In 1848 he became the music director at the ducal court in Weimar, where he served for 12 years. Liszt turned Weimar into a center for contemporary music, leading the local orchestra and opera troupe in many premieres of his own and other composers' works, especially those of Wagner and Berlioz. He also championed the music of dead composers, particularly Beethoven. This was also the period of his most intense composition.

Introduction

Liszt the Man ...
List of Sources
INTRODUCTION Consider Franz Liszt. He was the greatest pianist of his day and most likely the greatest of all time. As a musician he had everything - a perfect ear, the ability to hear a long and complicated piece of music and immediately play it back as written. He was probably the greatest sightreader who ever lived. Poorly educated, he pulled himself up and ended a thoroughly literate man. Incredibly good-looking as a young man, his amours were the talk of Europe. Later in life he befriended all struggling composers who crossed his path. He also turned out most of the great pianists of the later half of the 19th century. He was a complicated man, pulled by religion in one direction, the flesh in another. And his music is equally complicated. More than any of the early romantics, he broke free of previous influences and worked out his own rules. His larger forms were generally cyclic in nature, featured by transformation of thematic material. Often an entire work would be evolved from a cell at the beginning. In this there is a direct link from Liszt to serial composition. Harmonically the man was a raving genius. He was experimenting with chordal combinations that carried the seeds of atonality long before Wagner. Wagner was always stealing from his father-in-law, and admitted as much. There is the story of Liszt and Wagner sitting in a box as the curtain goes up on "Tristan and Isolde." Says Wagner, "That's your chord, papa." Says Liszt, "At least now it will be heard."

Attempts were made to launch such a society even during the master's life time, but it was finally established in 1893. The Society suffered a number of interruptions, before in 1973, it was reborn. After the change of system in Hungary, the Society became an independent Hungarian cultural civic association. It is directed by a presidential board of 12 members. The president is István Lantos, the distinguished pianist, organist and teacher. The secretary-general is the musicologist, Dr Klára Hamburger. The Society is a member of the Hungarian Music Council. Besides its Budapest seat, other branches of the society operate in Sopron, Pécs, Szekszard and Kalocsa. The Society has nearly 600 members. The Society's aims: to make familiar Liszt's life and musical oeuvre and to apply and propagate his noble ideals.
