Friday, March 7, 2003 Anderszewski's provocative style is always skillful By R.M. CAMPBELL
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC Piotr Anderszewski, the Polish-Hungarian pianist who made his Seattle debut Wednesday night at Meany Hall, is a musician who has gone his own way since the start of his career more than a decade ago. MUSIC REVIEW PIANIST PIOTR ANDERSZEWSKI WHEN: Wednesday night
WHERE: Meany Hall
He plays the music he wants to play regardless of what he thinks presenters want to present, audiences want to hear, recording companies want to record. And he has succeeded because he does what he does so well and so persuasively. His European career is already vigorous, and his American career is gathering momentum. The Seattle concert, almost 2 1/2 hours, began with Beethoven's massive "Diabelli" Variations. Most pianists see them as a final statement in the concert hall. Not Anderszewski. They are his signature piece, as extraordinary as that seems, and his opening gambit. That takes nerve: The 33 variations on a rather silly waltz last about an hour.

Versie: A
Uitvoerders: John Lill, piano
Referentie: Nimbus 5555

Versie: B Uitvoerders: Frederic Chiu, piano

Audience, Experts Surprised by Tchaikovsky Jury’s Ruling By BORIS LIFANOVSKY Special to the Times MOSCOW - The biggest sensation this year at the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition - held every four years in Moscow and considered the crowning glory of Russian musical culture - was that there were no sensations.
The contest that in past years brought to light such international stars as pianists Van Cliburn and Vladimir Ashkenazy drew nearly 300 young musicians from 60 countries. But they elicited so little enthusiasm from this year's juries that nobody in the three instrumental categories - violin, cello and piano - was awarded first prize.
It was the first time since the competition in honor of composer Pytor I. Tchaikovsky began in 1958 that performers honored in previous contests made up the juries. Throughout the week of competition that ended Thursday night, they proved to be the toughest of audiences.
Even the contestants best loved by the public - American violinist Jennifer Koh and Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky - were judged worthy only of second prizes.

During the opening remarks Dr. Thaddeus Gromada, Executive Director of this organization, reminded all present that the Meeting featured the largest number of Polish scholars so far, and that it represented the continuing tightening of connections between Polish and Polonian scholars. The press was also well represented, especially that it was provided with a magnet, in the form of Zbigniew Brzezinski, vice-president of PIASA (the president, Prof. Wandycz of Yale University was serving as the most gracious and sophisticated host), and Mr. Jerzy Buzek, former prime minister of Poland.

The walls of Flint Center rumbled Sunday with the force of full orchestral resources, punctuated with power-strokes on drums and metal percussion. The Manfred Symphony was Tchaikovsky's most ambitious and, at 55 minutes' performance time, largest symphonic project. However, it is performed far less often than any of the composer's six numbered symphonies. (That he came to repudiate it seemed to have no impact on the audience, which gave the reading a standing ovation.) In fact, as a programmatic symphony, the work seems a better fit for Berlioz. After all, the older, French composer had already gone down that road numerous times, notably in the ground-breaking Symphonie fantastique , the "dramatic symphony" Romeo et Juliette and in his own Byronic dalliance
