E-mail to a friend Classical review, pianist Radu Lupu at Symphony Center By Ted Shen Radu Lupu has the misfortune of being a facile, thoughtful, often poetical pianist in an age increasingly dazzled by a new breed of virtuosos, some also Russian trained and most specializing in the baldly romantic and technically ostentatious literature of the last 150 years. While capable of revealing vistas of beauty, Lupu's understated style has not exactly yielded remarkable successes in the niche of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert that he's focused on since winning key prizes in the late 1960s. For fresh insights into Beethoven, turn to Richard Goode, and for Mozart, look to Murray Perahia or Daniel Barenboim. It's perhaps only with Schubert that Lupu's name is high on the list of interpreters. Lupu's reticence got in the way in the sonata, one of Schubert's most poignantly lyrical. The technique and finesse was all there, making the abrupt transitions and the ever-morphing tonal colors come alive. Yet, in the Adagio, the aching heart of this music, Lupu stinted on his feelings. He got an ovation but that was probably for the bracing brio he displayed in the finale. Lupu took on a peculiarly languorous tempo to begin the Beethoven sonata. And he avoided sharp dynamic contrasts while trotting out the parade of melodic ideas then putting them in formation. The broodiness was muted, too gentle to have an impact. In the rondo that followed, too, the songlike theme, though elegantly conveyed, didn't soar with effervescence.

Web Search On the Aisle [INDEX] By Philip Anson / November 27, 2000 On the Aisle Daniel Barenboim’s ongoing Perspectives Series at Carnegie Hall offers a total of 16 concerts of his own devising spread over two years. The latest instalment was a four hand piano recital on Nov. 27, 2000, with Barenboim and Romanian pianist Radu Lupu. Commercially, it was a big success. Not only was the hall sold out but the stage was covered with spectators, leaving only a narrow path for the pianists to enter and exit. The concert’s drawing power can be attributed to the two stars, Barenboim and Lupu (each with is own distinct following), as well as the accessible all-Schubert program. The pianists sat side by side on two chairs and switched positions for each of the three pieces. For the opening Variations on an Original Theme in A-flat minor, D. 813 (1824), Barenboim took the top of the keyboard. In this role, he was the designated leader, and Lupu watched him closely. The rather flimsy work has no gripping merit and Barenboim seemed fully occupied sight reading the music in front of him. He ended each variation with the same emphatic flourish, as if to compensate for previous blandness. For Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor, D. 940 (1828), Lupu took the top, and suddenly the music came alive. He produced a gorgeously resonant tone and, unlike Barenboim, he played from inside the music. When the two pianists echoed each other in repeated passages, Lupu impressed one as the more sensitive performer.

Radu Lupu Plays Schubert December 15, 1999 Radu Lupu SCHUBERT PIANO SONATAS LONDON D 108670 SCHUBERT: 3 MARCHES MILITAIRES, 8 VARIATIONS, GRAND DUO TELDEC 0630-17146-2 Within the circles inhabited by the habitues of classical music, specifically among those who cherish classical piano music, there are certain performers of certain composers whose recordings have come down to us and who have influenced a good deal of our inner experience of the music as well as of our outer experience of the music as performers of some of it. Radu Lupu is one of these. Among the great interpreters of Franz Schubert's piano music, few could match the delicacy and clarity of restrained passion of Radu Lupu. Lupu's interpretations of the Sonatas D660 in A major and D960 in B flat major are intimate Schubert. Lupu seems somehow to let the superficial simplicity of the music belie its deeper secrets until we are suddenly, but with a gracious subtlety, made aware of them. The subtleties buried in these piano sonatas are beyond description here. What Schubert always tried to do was to take a typical classical form, especially one like the sonata, and tug and pull at its harmonic boundaries, creating often very deep emotional statements that prefigure those of the great romantic composers who were to come after him. Every Schubert piano sonata contains some of these elements and they are as a group of pieces all too often neglected by pianists.
