Austro-German Romanticism

SCHUMANN (1810-1856): The Four Symphonies - Overture, Scherzo and Finale

Staatskapelle Dresden
Wolfgang Sawallisch, conductor
EMI Compositions occasionally struck by visionary lightning, Schumann's symphonies give us a glimpse of the mental deterioration from which he died in 1856. The Dresdeners have this music in their blood and Wolfgang Sawallisch's white hot musical direction nails you to the wall.
Clara Haskil, piano
Philips Hunchbacked and Jewish in occupied France, the Roumanian pianist Clara Haskil (1895-1960) lived practically like a pauper until a few years before her death from an accidental fall on a staircase in a rundown Brussels railway station. Not exactly the dolce vita of Artur Rubinstein! Haskill, who made the world cry, knew unlike any other pianist how to interpret Schumann's shadow-peopled fantasy world.
BRAHMS (1833-1897): Piano Concerto no 1 (+ Franck, Litolff)

CURB YOUR SUV
Laurie David is not your typical Think Globally, Act Locally sort of environmentalist. Her husband, Larry David, co- created Seinfeld , for one thing, and now stars in his own series, Curb Your Enthusiasm . And David herself travels in privileged Hollywood circles. But she flips their good fortune on its head, mining her connections to actors, producers and movie execs to advance populist environmental campaigns. She’s the engine behind the Detroit Project and its controversial anti-SUV ads, and without her, one Santa Monica dealership would not be leading the country in sales of Toyota’s gas/electric hybrid, the Prius. DEBORAH VANKIN tells us how David puts celebrity activism in the driver’s seat.
Plus, LARRY DAVID on the perils of being married to an environmentalist.

Paul Horsley
Posted on Sun, Dec. 29, 2002 Music and dance notes: Best of 2002: 15 Great Moments in Classical and Dance By PAUL HORSLEY The Kansas City Star Five plucky dance troupes, four pianists banging, three Dick Strauss classics, two tenors crooning and a Russian who reads his own verse. The year 2002 was unusually rich for music and dance, and it never hurts to remind ourselves of this excellence. Here are my picks for the 15 top events of the year, in chronological rather than qualitative order. You might have other favorite 2002 music or dance programs you think should be included here. Just let me know and why you think they were exceptional. If your argument is compelling enough, I might include your pick in a future column. Violinist Gil Shaham's Harriman recital in late January was one for the books. The 30-something virtuoso showed himself worthy of inclusion in the grand line of great violinists. He's also purchased a fine Strad to help him along. Passionate, convincing, subtle Shaham's playing is still developing. And that's the good news, because it means more treats are in store for us as he continues to mature.
