Exceptional young Chinese pianist yin ma was the brilliant soloist and showedin her performances and incredible maturity well beyond her years. .

Home Biography Awards Reviews ... Send message Reviews "Pianist, Yin Ma, born in China 13 years ago but raised in the United States, is already launched on an international career, having won a handful of competitions, performed in China, Italy and Hungary. She showed affinity for Bartok, an even greater flair for Liszt. Lin responded to (the program's) challenges with exemplary vitality. She played Beethoven's Sonata op. 10 correctly and with solid technical assurance...if her career is not pushed too hard...her Beethoven should be quite special. Her Liszt is already outstanding...she played with a sure sense of the music's evocative charm and her interpretation of the Taranteella was fluent." - Joseph McLellan, The Washington Post, April 2, 1999 "An incredible young piano talent...swept away the audience with a virtuosity that would be amazing for a musician of any age. At only 13 years of age, Yin Ma is not only extraordinary because of her youth, but the beauty and skill of her performing provided an absolutely thrilling concert. The sight of Lin Ma's fingers flying over the keyboard made one's heart race with excitement and awe. Yin Ma has been well trained in the shadings of volume and texture and in bringing her whole body into the emotion of the music."

Chapter IV: "And A Good Time Was Had By All..."
Molly and Vicki arrived late at the Singer/Songwriter workshop. A blonde woman in buckskins was picking harp-like guitar arpeggios and singing in a high, childlike voice. From headband to moccasins, she was encrusted with fetishes, beads, shells, turquoise and silver jewelry. This, Vicki guessed, must be New Age singer Sierra Moonbeam. As Vicki surveyed the other performers, she realized that she'd stumbled into a sort of sartorial Rosetta stone. For here, in the workshop, there was a cross section of all the major folky clothing styles. At the far left end of the stage, the nerd or filker style of dress was modeled by a gangling, fidgety young man in rumpled jeans, rumpled T shirt, suspenders, and Reeboks. Lounging on the young man's right was a tall, tattooed cowboy. Next to the cowboy sat an androgynous punk rocker type with a buzz haircut, black leather boots and jacket, ripped jeans, and a "Welcome to Washington" T-shirt which featured a picture of a smiley face with the top of its head blown off. At the far right a heavily made up woman in a strapless black velvet evening gown lounged against a piano and stared glassily into the crowd. Behind her a piano player in a tux stifled a yawn.
From a tape that was made at the workshop and later turned up as evidence in the trial, Vicki was able to transcribe portions of the workshop that she felt imparted the true flavor of the event. She wishes to thank the workshop participants for permitting her to use this material.
