This is an excellent disc in a number of ways. One of its characteristics is that it is a condensed survey of the entire piano music output of Rachmaninov. Let me explain. There are three works on this disc; the Five Fantasy Pieces Op. 3, the Second Piano Sonata in B flat minor and the Corelli Variations . Now the Opus 5 was written shortly after the composer's student years came to an end. The Piano Sonata dates from his fortieth year and the Corelli Variations was the very last original composition for piano, being written in 1931. However that is not all. Two of the Five Fantasy Pieces were revised as late as 1940 and of course the Piano Sonata was itself reworked by the composer eighteen years after it first performance. So we have a conspectus of Rachmaninov's achievement over a period of nearly half a century.

he piano was by far Prokofiev's favorite instrument. He was a formidable pianist in his own right, premiering most of his works in concert halls around the world. Fortunately, many of the greatest pianists of the 20th century were drawn to Prokofiev's compositions as well. Two Russian pianists who knew Prokofiev and premiered his later piano sonatas stand tallest in the pantheon of great interpreters of Prokofiev's piano works Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. As with the great conductors of today who specialize in Prokofiev's works, there are a number of young pianists who rival the greats of yesterday. Several pianists have recently completed recording the entire Prokofiev piano cycle including Boris Berman (on Chandos), Frederic Chiu (on Harmonia Mundi), and Oleg Marshev (on Danacord). Also not to be missed is Barbara Nissman , who was the first to record the complete piano sonatas to commemorate Prokoifev's 100th birthday in 1991 her sonata cycle remains one of the towering achievements of the last twenty years for Prokofiev lovers. THE DOMINION
May 28, 1998
A mix of passion and magic
Given the standing ovation and shouts of "Bravo" uncommon at a lunchtime recital, this is the kind of concert that audiences like. Here was music from the Romantic piano - repertoire given impassioned, authoritative readings from a pianist with the kind of formidable technique we have come to expect from the Russians. Rather than trying to match its poetic text, Franz Liszt's Petrarch Sonnet 104 came across as impassioned and forceful, as did the dazzling Etude in F Minor. Best of all was the fiendishly difficult Rachmaninov Second Sonata, a dark piece that contrasted "the awesome ringing of bells" with a charming, lilting Siciliano. The quiet passages were magical. Marshev gave two encores: Rodion Schedrin's rhythmically charming A la Albeniz and Prokofiev's display piece Suggestion Diabolique. Joy Aberdein

Rachmaninoff Four Preludes Sonata No.2 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 36 Born in Baku, former USSR, OLEG MARSHEV trained with Valentina Aristova at the Gnesin School for Highly Gifted Children and with Mikhail Voskresensky at the Moscow Conservatory where he completed his Performance Doctorate in 1988 gaining the Diploma with Honor. Marshev is thus a direct representative of the fifth generation of Russian pianism since Liszt, through Alexander Siloti, Konstantin Igumnov and Voskresensky's teacher, Lev Oborin. Marshev's First Prize in the 1988 "Pilar Bayona" International Piano Competition (Spain) proved the first in a series of illustrious competition victories which have confirmed the artist's reputation as one of the most talented Russian pianists of his generation: in 1990 he took First Prize and the Gold Medal at the AMSA World Piano Competition of Cincinnati; in 1991 First Prize at the Concorso Pianistico Internazionale "Citta di Marsala" and the following year he was awarded the coveted Primo Premio Assoluto in the Italian capital's premier competition, the Concorso Pianistico Internazionale "Roma 1992". In addition to numerous engagements in his native country, Marshev has performed all throughout the world from Canada to New Zealand. 1991 saw his New York debut with a highly acclaimed recital at the Lincoln Center "Alice Tully Hall". Next year for the first time he appeared at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw which led to other invitations to perform at this prestigious hall. Engagements for 2000 included appearances with West Virginia Symphony, Asheville Symphony, Akron Symphony, Symphony of Americas, recitals in Montreal, Glasgow, tours in Florida, Great Britain, Denmark and New Zealand. Resident in Italy, he is also in increasing demand as a teacher, holding masterclasses in Spain, Italy, Great Britain and the USA, and as a competition jury member (including that of the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati).

DANACORD DACOCD 581 Danacord Records This CD combines two things that have always given me great pleasure - the underrated composer and the piano concerto. Here Danacord have given us in 'Volume 2' of a projected series, three fine examples of nineteenth century essays in this form. All three concerti are worthy of study and any one of them would be a 'pull' at the concert hall were they ever to be given a chance. Groves dictionary could not help me with August Winding . However the programme notes are informative and give a brief account of his life and works. Winding was the son of a clergyman who had a passion for collecting and arranging Danish folk songs. Naturally, August studied with his father. Soon, however, he was to move to greater things; he studied piano with Anton Ree who had known Chopin. This was followed by composition lessons with Carl Reinecke and theory with no less a person than Niels W. Gade, the father of Danish music. In the first instance Winding was a pianist. He made quite an impression both in Denmark and in concert halls and recital rooms throughout Europe. His specialities were the concerti of Mozart and Beethoven. He enjoyed playing in chamber ensembles as well as performing as a recitalist. From 1867 he taught at the conservatoire in Copenhagen.

»On hearing Oleg Marshev's opening salvo in Rachmaninov's First Concerto (and his eruption into the cadenza later in the same movement) I was predisposed to like these performances. Indeed, they prove to be honest, committed, and founded on ample technical aplomb. These performances struck me as genuinely

Young Russian pianist Oleg Marshev has won a number of major prizes, the first of which was the 1988 Pilar Bayona International Piano Competition in Spain. Since then he has concertized extensively and made some fine recordings for Danacord - I've only heard two CDs of concert etudes of Emil von Sauer, many receiving their disk premieres - and they are given stunning performances (REVIEW) . Marshev also has recorded all of Prokofiev's solo piano music and the five piano concertos as well as a number of "Danish Romantic Piano Concertos," with complete sets of piano/orchestra works of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich in the works. Unfortunately, this set of the Rachmaninoff concertos will not add to Marshev's reputation. Throughout his tempi are cautious, almost reticent, and there are few instances of full-blown dynamic pianism so appropriate for this music. The opening chords of Concerto No. 2 are played without imagination. Concerto No. 3 is particularly sedate, and there is no magic in the problematic Concerto No. 4, a work particularly magnificent in the hands of Arturo Benedetti-Michelangeli and Earl Wild.

EMIL VON SAUER: Twenty Concert Etudes
Oleg Marshev, pianist

DANACORD DACOCD 487 (F) (DDD) TT: 77:21 Sauer's works include 2 piano concertos, 2 sonatas and 29 concert studies, 20 of which are included on this recent CD issued in Europe about two years ago, only now (May 2001) in the U.S. Only one, the first, is actually called "concert-etude," in G-flat; with a playing time of 8:34 it is the longest of all. The others have colorful, imaginative titles (Sighing Breezes, The Hunt, Sirens, Bird Songs etc. with one called "L'Eteuf" (which apparently has something to do with a tennis ball) translated as "fangball." Although all are of extreme difficulty, several are devoted to specific piano techniques, i.e. octaves and trills. All are salon music of the highest order with an abundance of arpeggios and gossamer textures. The sedate center section of Vision , in B minor is quite similar to the central section of Chopin's Scherzo No. 3. Young Russian pianist Oleg Marshev, winner of many prestigious prizes in the piano competition world, plays Sauer's music with finesse as well as technical assurance. It's a delectable program, best taken in small doses and has been very well recorded. If you have a keen interest in Emil von Sauer you might investigate the superb 3-CD set (Marston 53002) containing his Liszt recordings along with many shorter pieces recorded in the late '20s and '30s when Sauer was in his prime a collection that includes two of the concert etudes on the new Danacord recording. A second Marshev is in the works which will include the remaining concert etudes and other Sauer pieces.
