Print this page Monday, April 8, 2002 COMMENTARY Competition of Pianists Ends on a Controversial Note The contest's structure and emphasis on music of Rachmaninoff ensure an undistinguished outcome. By MARK SWED, Times Staff Writer RELATED: Judges disqualify an audience favorite. Evgeni Mikhailov has a shiny new piano and $30,000 he didn't have last week. Twenty-nine other pianists who traveled from far and wide to Pasadena to trudge through some of Rachmaninoff's most popular music must return home disappointed. At the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Saturday night, a couple thousand people paid as much as $120 a seat to hear a short concert and sit through a long awards ceremony, dominated by commercial sponsors and self-congratulating organizers. A star was not born. I did not attend the proceedings of the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition, so I cannot speak about the caliber of all the pianists who entered. I am also willing to accept the sponsors' claims that the jurors for this new competition voted their sincere enthusiasms, however predictable the prizes they ultimately awarded. This competition is a Russian enterprise, and a Russian, who tastelessly banged his way through Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" Saturday, took the top honors. The competition also had backing from Kawai, the Japanese piano manufacturer; the Japanese pianist, Mizuka Kano, who won second prize, was bland, if technically secure, in the two short solo Rachmaninoff pieces she played. There was no one deemed worthy of third place.

Print this page Monday, April 8, 2002 MUSIC Competition of Pianists Ends on a Controversial Note Judges disqualify an audience favorite, saying he played too poorly, and decline to name a third-place winner. By CHRIS PASLES, Times Staff Writer COMMENTARY: Music critic Mark Swed Officials at the first Rachmaninoff International Competition and Festival wanted to avoid controversy. But one landed in their laps anyway when, in announcing top honors Friday at Pasadena Civic Auditorium, the judges disqualified Alessio Cioni, 23, of Italy from the final round. "With regret," they declared in a statement, "it is the unanimous decision of the jury that Mr. Cioni's lack of preparation in his performances in the final round was such that is it not warranted that he be considered a laureate finalist of this competition. He will remain, however, designated a formal semifinalist." There was more than a title involved. Each of the three non-medalist finalists received $10,000 (semifinalists, $2,000). First-place winner Evgeni Mikhailov, 29, of Russia, got $30,000, a Kawai concert grand piano and a concert date with the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra. Second-place winner Mizuka Kano, 23, of Japan, received $20,000. Both also will have a CD released by L.A.-based Pipeline Music, one of the sponsors. No third-place winner was awarded. (Finalist Ning An, 25, of the United States, won the $3,000 Audience Prize, announced at the awards ceremony and concert on Saturday.)

Canadian-born composer Henry Brant's work, Ice Field: Spatial Narratives for Large and Small Orchestral Groups , has won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for music.
The piece, which was created in the "spatial music" style that Brant has pursued since 1950, involves the placing of instrumental sections of an orchestra in various locations in a concert hall for sonic and expressive effect. Brant has composed more than 100 pieces of spatial music during his career, many of which mix musical styles ranging from traditional classical to Balinese gamelan, jazz, bluegrass and others.
Ice Field was commissioned by the Other Minds Festival in San Francisco and was given its world premiere in December by Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony.
