About Heart Music
  • Heart Music is an established independent label whose first 25 jazz releases have been recognized with international press, awards and radio airplay. Heart Music is now expanding its roster to include innovative music that is transcending genres. Credit for the label goes to its president, Tab Bartling , an industrious Austin businessman and longtime jazz and music fan for whom Heart Music is the result of a lifelong dream. The company opened its doors in late 1989 with its first release guitarist Heart Magic which received airplay on more than 240 radio stations (Collage, Jazz stations and AAA) around the country. Bartling spent 1990 expanding his distribution and recording new product, including First Takes , the first of five albums by Tony Campise , a consummate saxophone player. First Takes has an acoustic, traditional sound that set the tone for ensuing releases. The following are highlights of Heart Music and its artists accomplishments.

    27. Doug Proper, 7 String Jazz Guitarist - Story
I had moved to Westchester, I was working with pianist George Candreva our jazz organtrio a la Jimmy Smith/Wes montgomery under the Copyright doug Proper 2001
    http://www.dougproper.com/as_bad_as_it_gets.htm
    As Bad As It Gets
I will be the first to admit that a musician's life is, at times, not all it's cracked up to be. There are times that you make more money than you can count and others when you don't know where your next meal is coming from. You have to deal with smoky bars, shifty club owners, crooked agents, and even unreliable musicians at times. With that said, I would not give it up for anything in the world - in fact, I highly recommend it.
A short time after I had moved to Westchester, I was working with pianist George Candreva on a rhythm and blues project. In the very early stages, I was on the guitar, George was on organ/keyboards and Gary Schwartz was on drums. Gary was a new acquaintance of mine and a fine drummer. Since those days we have played a lot together and I have come to regard him as a dear friend.
Our first day of auditions for a bassist and singer turned out to be a bust. The people we had scheduled either couldn't make it, got lost or had canceled. The three of us spent the entire day playing jazz standards. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and the music really sounded good. After several hours we concluded that we had a great group right there. We didn't need a bassist or a singer. We decided to form our jazz organ trio a la Jimmy Smith/Wes Montgomery under the guise of the "Affirmation Trio".
While following George on the Taconic, I got caught behind a couple of slow drivers and George sped off, unaware that I was no longer behind him. I wasn't worried however, since we had both taken the precaution of carrying a copy of the directions.

Discography (19) All Night Long ('56, Prestige) Hank Mobley(ts), Jerome Richardson(fl,ts), Art Taylor(ds), Mal Waldron(p), Doug Watkins(b), Donald Byrd(tp), Kenny Burrell(g) Two of guitarist Kenny Burrell's best sessions from the 1950s were this release (reissued on CD in the OJC series) and its companion All Day Long. Burrell is teamed with an impressive group of young all-stars, including trumpeter Donald Byrd, tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley, Jerome Richardson on flute and tenor, pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor. In addition to the lengthy "All Night Long" and three group originals (two by Mobley and one from Waldron), the LP program has been augmented by a medley of "Body and Soul" and "Tune Up" from the same session. Jam sessions such as this one are only as good as the solos; fortunately, all of the musicians sound quite inspired, making this an easily recommended set.

Reportoiret var denne gangen også litt mer konservativt med eldre standardlåter og boplåter som "Everything I Love" (Porter), "Half Nelson" (Miles Davis), "Love Letters" (Young), "Get out of town" (Porter), Just Friends (Klemmer/Lewis), "We'll be together again" (Fisher/Lane) og "So do it" (Montgomery).

They were VERY young parents, and my grandparents were a source of support and comfort for two people who were just kids themselves. My grandfather was loving and generous in spirit and a great role model for me. I miss him greatly." (Source: Terry Taylor)

AL Wes was a relaxed, laid-back player. He wanted drummers to listen intently, add to whatever his concept was, and create without being too busy. He didn't want to hear musicians show off technique. It felt so good playing with him because of this relaxed manner of playing. Good accompanists add to the soloist's statements to help the audience understand what is being said. It's musical talk; we're talking to each other. Eddie Harris put me on the spot to be creative. In the late 1950s we played at a club called the Archway at 61st and Calumet with pianist Charles Stephanie and bassist Henry Hill. Hill was my mentor, and he got me the gig. Charles Stephanie left the group to compose jingles and to write for Ramsey Lewis and Minnie Rippleton; eventually he worked with Earth, Wind, and Fire. Our next pianist was Jodie Christian, who I love, and later Doug Fraser, who played both trumpet and piano.

    Chris Olson
Chris Olson was vice president of Electronic Trading at Solomon Brothers through 1998, where he built the first equity trading desk on Wall Street, a feat which revolutionized the way all equity trading is done today. Later Olson went on to CommerzBank AG, where he was able to apply this technology on a more global level. Today he is hoping to accomplish similar advances in the media management sector, with his company Spheric Media, a D.C.-based software provider that he founded in 1999. Olson is also lending his talents to Holt International Children’s Services, an organization that provides adoption services around the world, specializing in the Far East and Eastern Europe. Olson first became familiar with Holt 18 years ago when his parents adopted his sister Molly. He is currently engaged in a project for Holt that will lend Web-camera technology to adoption shelters…thereby giving adoptive parents the ability to communicate with their children in the months before they arrive in the United States as well as allow prospective parents who are not able to travel to the Far East or Eastern Europe to communicate with children there.
