  • On April 7 Czech television will air a 1-hour feature on Ivan Moravec. I'm not sure who is doing it, but he thinks they may put out an English subtitled version later. There is talk (still in preliminary stage) of a recording project featuring Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Flash on the new Ravel/Franck recording already in production: it will also include a brand-new Beethoven 4th Piano Concerto! Details here On March 19, the Czech and Slovak community of Minnesota welcomed Ivan Moravec with a festival in his honor. The event was held in St. Paul's CSPS Hall. Appropriately enough, this is the same building where Anton Dvorak was entertained by a local Czech orchestra one hundred years ago. Moravec says all his performances there were taped, and may be broadcast on radio Michael Evje provides some interesting audio recording lore in a letter. We've reorganized the Musical Notes pages, which had outgrown the original structure. We hope it's easier to find stuff now. Moravec reported last week that he has "almost completed" reviewing the new Chopin CD for Vox, and it should be coming out soon. "I think you will like it," he added. Details on the

Pianist's pianist delights
o call Ivan Moravec a pianist's pianist is not an opinion or a cliche. It's an observation: Of the more than 500 who turned out to hear the Czech pianist Saturday night, an unusually high percentage were professional pianists, piano teachers and students. Some knew from previous encounters with Moravec that they would hear playing of great delicacy and color sensitivity, unaffected power and unerring phrasing. Those who didn't know found out soon enough, and were delighted by the discovery. Moravec devoted most of his program to Chopin: the 24 preludes, the Ballade in F minor and, as an encore, the Mazurka in C sharp minor. It was a fine cross section of the composer's various modes of expression and of how this pianist addresses them. The preludes, a nearly hourlong series of short and very short pieces (with a few more extended, rhapsodic ones in the center of the set), alternating in major and minor keys in an ascending, then descending tonal arch, require a strong personality as well as a strong technician to project successfully in a concert setting. Moravec, playing at a level of concentration that proved infectious, emphasized the paired nature of the preludes, in effect turning 24 pieces into 12, and played up their contrasts between the lyrical or modal and the rhythmic and turbulent.

ACCLAIMED PIANIST
IVAN MORAVEC TO PERFORM AT YOUNG HARRIS
Back by popular demand, Young Harris College proudly presents a live performance by Ivan Moravec, one of the century's great pianists. The concert will be held on campus Tuesday, November 13th at 8 PM in the Glenn Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the general public. Ivan Moravec's performances and recordings have prompted critics in search of parallels to call up names such as Gieseking and Richter. Yet, his musicianship, while it challenges comparison with these masters, is riveting and penetratingly individual in style. A native of Prague, Ivan Moravec made his American debut in January 1964 with The Cleveland Orchestra and George Szell at Severance Hall; the following month, he made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall. Since then, he has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago and Boston symphonies, the Philadelphia and Minnesota orchestras, the National, St. Louis, Toronto, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas and Baltimore symphonies and the Saint Paul, Los Angeles and Orpheus chamber orchestras. As one of the world's most acclaimed recitalists, Mr. Moravec has appeared in recitals at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center and on the major recital series in Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Cleveland and Philadelphia. For more information on Mr. Moravec's performance at Young Harris College, please call (706) 379-4311, ext. 5156.

For the first time, I felt confronted by the fact that we do indeed live in another century. One has to cope with this, but always try not to lose contact with the values of the past. Otherwise, one had better commit suicide. The 70 year old Ivan Moravec has consciously avoided stardom and marketing with the result that he is virtually unknown to the public and to many critics. But with Michelangeli or Richter, Gilels or Arrau, Serkin or Cherkassky no longer with us, one would have thought that the Philips edition, ' Great Pianists of the 20th Century' From the street In the Mists Sadly, the whole evening brought far too many disturbing coughs from the audience, but the lightening had already started with Haydn. The brilliant echo effects at the beginning of the first movement, the sonority of the chords in the Largo and the bubbling innocentemente From the street In the mists played with such clarity and utmost sensibility. Preludes fortissimo never sounds noisy or brutal - more like a fulfilled forte without any force - while his pianissimo Hans-Theodor Wohlfahrt Selected discography: Great Pianists of the 20th Century

IVAN MORAVEC, piano
Long recognized as one of the century’s great pianists, Ivan Moravec’s performances and recordings alike have prompted critics in search of parallels to call up such names as Gieseking and Richter. Yet his musicianship, while it challenges comparison with these masters, is riveting and penetratingly individual in style.
Mr. Moravec was born in Prague in 1930 and until the age of 15, his main musical interest was in opera. He later studied piano at the Prague Conservatory and the Prague Academy, performing during his student years in Poland and Hungary. In 1957, pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli heard Mr. Moravec perform in Prague and invited him to Italy for further study, where he participated in Michelangeli's master classes in Arezzo in 1957 and 1958.
In Europe, Mr. Moravec has appeared in recital and as concerto soloist in the major music capitals including London, Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Oslo, Rome and Milan. He also recently completed a third tour of Australia and regularly travels to Japan for appearances with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and recitals in Tokyo’s major venues. His international festival appearances include the Salzburg, Edinburgh, Ruhr, Schleswig-Holstein and the Prague Spring Festivals.

That is, of course, except for the Mozart Concerto in A Major, K.488 featuring the distinguished Mr. Moravec, but then Prague with its rich musical life played an important role in Mozart’s career, so you could say that there was still a Czech flavor about this concert. It is always a pleasure to hear Mr. Moravec, for he is a thorough musician who consistently exhibits great integrity in his music making. In his playing there is nothing for show or effect, only love and respect for the inherent values in the music itself. Whereas some pianists might attempt to bring a more brilliant, virtuoso approach to performing the Mozart A Major Concerto, Moravec gave us an intimate and subtle chamber music performance. Always listening to the orchestra, he molded and blended his performance so that he became an integral part of the ensemble. To hear the way he shaped his phrases with loving care, sometimes tapering them off to a delicious

Pianist creates collage of emotion in jazzy concerto
March 17, 2003 By DIANE PETERSON
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

SYMPHONY REVIEW The Santa Rosa Symphony under Music Director Jeffrey Kahane took a spring-like romp Saturday night through a series of vibrant works based on the variation theme. Like a climbing vine, each work sprouted elaborate tendrils around its themes, growing and evolving into colorful and inventive variations. Framed by Brahms' sturdy "Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn" and Hindemith's crisp "Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber," the program showcased the orchestra's top-notch wind, brass and percussion sections. But the intellectual pleasures derived from these works paled beside the deep well of emotion that flowed from Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, played before intermission with grace and warmth by Czech pianist Ivan Moravec. The tall, stately pianist brought a sense of calm and utter control to the jazzy concerto, which opens with a bang from the percussion section and sparkling arpeggios and glissandos from the piano. When Moravec plays, there are no extraneous movements or showy flourishes, no thunderous chords or unnecessary ritardandos.

"Live In Prag" - Chopin, Haydn, Janácek
