For his first downtown recital in four years, the pianist from Prague offered an immensely satisfying demonstration of the virtues that have won him a following of devoted connoisseurs since appearing in the U.S. in the mid-1960s. Everything the 72-year-old Moravec played was illuminating, but never in a way that exalted the musician above the music. The Old World style and grace were like a throwback to those keyboard giants one had imagined were gone forever. Moravec began with Schumann's "Kinderszenen," playing these domestic vignettes with just the right combination of childlike simplicity and mature sophistication. In them the pianist revealed a master portraitist's ability to bring a subject to life with only a few well-chosen brushstrokes.

Ivan Moravec

SYMPHONY Great Mozart,
Ivan Moravec
Jiri Belohlávek
By John McCarthy
Czech conductor Jiri Belohlávek and the Czech pianist Ivan Moravec teamed up with the San Francisco Symphony this past Friday at Davies Symphony Hall. Performances of two orchestral rarities by Janácek and Martinu framed a Mozart concerto, making for an engaging and deeply moving evening. Moravec is something of a cult figure in piano circles and his belated San Francisco Symphony debut has been long awaited. The natural elegance of his playing is ideally suited to the Mozart Concerto in A major, K.488. His legendary sound was not merely generically beautiful, but revelatory. Mozart as supreme colorist was present in Moravec’s playing throughout. His was always a meaningful sonority, rather than naively trivial. Even with a reduced orchestra, Belohlávek produced a sonority that was at once lush and yet clear. Mozart’s innovations in orchestration, his ability to blend woodwinds and horn with a cantabile, liquid piano line came to mind throughout the performance. Completed in 1786, at a time when pianos produced a sustained tone that was also agile, the concerto contains one of the great slow movements in all the literature. Moravec maximized the elasticity of the Adagio without breaking the line. While today’s modern piano is perhaps more diffuse in sound and sings with some difficulty, Moravec’s tone may well have been close to what Mozart had in mind.

Ivan Moravec at Symphony Center
November 26, 2002 BY WYNNE DELACOMA CLASSICAL MUSIC CRITIC
The temptation to coo and dither over children, to dissolve into misty sentimentality at their sweet innocence and irrepressible vitality is very nearly irresistible. But real children tend to wriggle away from the sentimental ditherers as fast as they can. Like the large audience of adults at Ivan Moravec's piano recital Sunday afternoon at Symphony Center, real children probably would have loved his take on Schumann's familiar "Kinderszenen" ("Scenes of Childhood"), which opened a program also featuring Chopin, Brahms and Debussy. Now age 72 with decades of distinguished musicmaking behind him, the Czech pianist has never been one for either bombast or sentimental outpourings. His playing exudes the best kind of aristocratic elegance. Like the conversation of an attentive uncle, Schu-mann's set of 13 short pieces were straightforward and sprightly, sprinkled with teasing surprises and clearheaded tenderness. "Kinderszenen" includes one of Schumann's best-known pieces, "Traumerei" ("Dreaming"), and Mora-vec's performance exemplified his approach to the entire series. It was a portrait of a child's untroubled slumber, the sleep of a soul that had not yet been jolted awake by adult worries and longings. Serene, unhurried, Schumann's soothing melody unfolded with easy grace, as confident and peaceful as a young woman who believes her beauty will last forever.

Pianist Ivan Moravec to Perform at the Middlebury College Center for the Arts on Jan. 21 "Mr. Moravec was a delight: pristine, ringing sound; curious but pleasing ritards and diminuendos, and above all the blanket of calm older players can bestow on roiling music." The New York Times More than 35 years after his American debut, renowned pianist Ivan Moravec will perform at Middlebury College at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, in the Concert Hall of the Center for the Arts, on Route 30. His rare, rich program of Chopin will include six Nocturnes, Ballade No. 1, and the 24 Preludes. This performance is sponsored by the Middlebury College Concert Series. Moravec, a native of Prague, first appeared in America with the Cleveland Orchestra and George Szell at Severance Hall in 1964. Shortly after this concert, he made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall. Since then he has played with orchestras all over the U.S., including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston and Chicago symphonies, as well as at such festivals as Tanglewood, Blossom, and Ravinia. Internationally, Moravec has enchanted audiences in all of the major music capitals of Europe and Asia, including London, Vienna, Paris, Tokyo, and Milan.
