These two CDs were digitally recorded for LP release in 1982-83, and thus add up to just under 95 minutes. With playing on this level, though, they'd still be a bargain at almost any price. The color, shading, and imagination Ivan Moravec applies to Debussy makes the music glow and shimmer. His Chopin playing is some of the best in the business; sample the idiomatic rhythms of the Mazurkas, or the memorable journey he makes out of the Polonaise- Fantaisie . As it happens, the discs sell for a very low price (less than that of a standard full-price single disc), making this set a major bargain. Leslie Gerber Amazon.com Ivan Moravec isn't a superstar in terms of having a glitzy career. But to critics and connoisseurs, he is one of the greatest pianists. His relatively few recordings are scattered among a variety of labels. This collection, from two early-eighties digital LPs, is particularly well recordedimportant for a pianist with such wonderful tonal variety. The composers are two of Moravec's specialties, and he gives them consistently colorful, imaginative performances. The short timing (94:00) is compensated by the ultra-low price, making this set a great piano bargain.

Photo by Anost Nosek More Notes Than Notions: Guest pianist Ivan Moravec SJ Symphony scores with Panufnik, strikes out with Beethoven and Shostakovich By Philip Collins More attractive in concept than execution, the San Jose Symphony's program last Saturday consisted of rough-edged renderings of key works by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Polish composer Andrzej Panufnik (1914-1991). Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 received an underwhelming going-over by veteran virtuoso Ivan Moravec, and although Shostakovich's naughty Symphony No. 9 had sumptuous moments, blemishes undermined a good many prominent episodes.
The San Jose Symphony Home Page has this season's complete schedule.
Oddly enough, Panufnik's immensely challenging Sinfonia sacra (1964) came closest to the mark. Music Director Leonid Grin gave the work its due, drawing from the orchestra a reading that was both informed and spirited. Panufnik's Sinfonia sacra is a work of strength and beauty. The composer gracefully accomplished his stated purpose of invoking religious, as well as heroic, virtues in musical terms. Composed as a tribute to Poland's Millennium of Christianity and Statehood, the Sinfonia sacra draws plentifully from this country's history.

Pianist
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A pianist is a person who plays the piano A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Sergei Rachmaninov Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin , and Robert Schumann were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's First Full Season Under Music Director Yuri Temirkanov By Stephen Wigler
The Baltimore Symphony's programs for 2000-2001, Yuri Temirkanov's first full season as the BSO's music director, look very promising indeed. That's true if for no other reason than that Temirkanov, born in the Caucasus but Russian-bred and -trained, was able to achieve such remarkable results in the 1999-2000 season in a tenure that really didn't begin until half the season was over. In looking ahead to Temirkanov's programs, it is important to keep in mind that what may look ordinary may prove to be extraordinary. Temirkanov has a knack for subverting expectations and for making listeners hear familiar music in fresh and unexpected ways. Who expected, for example, that Temirkanov's reading of Tchaikovsky's thrice-familiar, impossibly over-played Symphony No. 6 ("Pathetique') would be such an extraordinary experience, revealing a composer whose music was unexpectedly poetic, unfailingly elegant, and filled with feeling that, instead of mere sentimentality, expressed such profound emotional depth. Then there was Shostakovich's Symphony No. 13 ("Babi Yar')
