Prokofiev Sonata No.1 Op.80 The highlight of this Eastern European program is Prokofiev's First Violin Sonata. Composed between 1938 and 1946, this epic work is often held to be his supreme masterpiece and is performed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. This is preceded by some delightful miniatures by Martinu, and Szymanowski's sensuous and dramatic neo-impressionist Myths, all three based on ancient Greek legends.

Home News Reviews Spotlight ... Who Is RedLudwig? The latest news in classical music. 8 October 2001 A NEW TANGLEWOOD GROWS IN THE POCONOS Outgoing Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge donated $15 million to the facility
A "new Tanglewood" is being built within a two-hour drive from mid-town Manhattan and Philadelphia in the heart of the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.
The new facilities just received a $15 million matching grant from outgoing Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge. The center, to be known as the Tom Ridge Pavillion, will be the site of summer retreats for various arts organizations. The groups now signed up are the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), the Philadelphia Orchestra, the American Ballet Theater, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and the Pennsylvania Ballet.
The PSO had been seeking a summer home since 1991, when it stopped playing summer concerts at Great Woods in Pittsfield, Mass. An attempt in the 1990s to set up a summer home in Bedford County, Penn., fell through.
"Now more than ever, we have to appreciate the value of the arts as a way for people to deal with a huge range of emotions," Gov. Ridge said in a speech. "Maybe as we move forward with this performing arts center, we'll inspire the schools to pay as much attention to the arts as to sports programs."
Plans for the center also include performances by music and drama students at New York University.

Home News Reviews Spotlight ... Who Is RedLudwig? The latest news in classical music. 31 August 2001 NEW WORK DIALS UP A SCORE The Dialtones Telesymphony is "played" on the audience's cell phones
In an odd twist on contemporary concert experiences, members of the audience at a performance, Sunday, in Linz, Austria, will be asked to turn on their cell phones.
Composer Golan Levin's Dialtones Telesymphony , which will be given its premier as part of Takeover: The 2001 Arts Electronica Festival, in the city's Brucknerhaus Auditorium, is made up entirely of the ringing of cell phones. The piece, which Levin says will "permanently alter the way in which its participants think about the cellular space we inhabit," consists of onstage musicians/engineers manipulating the ring tones of as many as 200 cell phones.
In an elaborate, pre-concert preparation, audience members will be asked to register their phones at various secure Web kiosks in the hall. New ring tones will then be uploaded to their phones and they are then given assigned seats. When the 30-minute performance piece begins, the musicians activate the phones via a "specially designed, visual-musical software instrument."
The result will be, as Levin states on his Dialtones website, an attempt to invert "our understandings of private sound, public space, electromagnetic etiquette, and the fabric of the communications network which connects us."

CURB YOUR SUV
Laurie David is not your typical Think Globally, Act Locally sort of environmentalist. Her husband, Larry David, co- created Seinfeld , for one thing, and now stars in his own series, Curb Your Enthusiasm . And David herself travels in privileged Hollywood circles. But she flips their good fortune on its head, mining her connections to actors, producers and movie execs to advance populist environmental campaigns. She’s the engine behind the Detroit Project and its controversial anti-SUV ads, and without her, one Santa Monica dealership would not be leading the country in sales of Toyota’s gas/electric hybrid, the Prius. DEBORAH VANKIN tells us how David puts celebrity activism in the driver’s seat.
Plus, LARRY DAVID on the perils of being married to an environmentalist.
