Vital Stats:

Birth Place: Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia
Nationality: Australian
Bio:

Geoffrey Rush was little known outside his native Australia when he soared to international prominence on the wings of a remarkable portrayal of eccentric pianist David Helfgott in Scott Hicks' acclaimed biopic "Shine" (1996), for which he won a slew of awards, including a Best Actor Oscar. Arguably his country's top stage actor, he had made his mark specializing in madmen, clowns and misfit alcoholics, in his own words "marginalized eccentrics," a resume that ideally suited him to play the former prodigy sidelined by mental illness, but it was his own 1992 "down on all fours, barking mad" breakdown which provided the unique insight for his passionate performance. Phone (480) 391-2091; fax (480) 451-0322; or email. Ike Cole, like his older brother Nat King Cole, achieved wide recognition as a pianist and singer. He was in much demand internationally, and recorded seventeen record albums during his career.
Ike was born in Chicago and began working in the late 1950s at Chicago's famous Black Orchid Club. He traveled and performed with his trio until the late 1960s, when he began appearing as a solo entertainer.
Ike performed with his younger brother Freddy Cole (also a pianist and singer of international fame) in concerts during the 1980s and early 1990s. In addition, he played piano behind his niece Natalie Cole on "Route 66," one of the songs on her album "Unforgettable."

Chris Rock's 'Head of State' earns vote of approval

"Head of State" is more like Chris Rock's late, lamented TV show, though it probably will be lumped in with the unfortunate genre of "Saturday Night Live" films. Even so, he could have gone further and been even funnier.
John Travolta bright spot of otherwise mechanical 'Basic'

"Basic," written by James Vanderbilt, is a military "Rashomon" story, a la "A Few Good Men" or "Courage Under Fire." Something has happened, and now an investigator must come in and sort through the various versions to find out exactly what did occur.
You'll dig surprising first half of 'The Core'

By rights, nothing about "The Core" should work — not its silly sci-fi premise or its broad Saturday-matinee acting or its lavish special effects.

    100. THE BLACKLISTED JOURNALIST,WHEN HARRY MET ALLEN By Mitch Myers, liner Notes,Locus
Mitch myers writes liner notes for New York Blues, Rags, Ballads & Harmonium Songs 197174
    http://www.bigmagic.com/pages/blackj/column83f.html
    SECTION SEVEN sm
    COLUMN E IGHTY-THREE JANUARY 15
2003 The Blacklisted Journalist) WHEN HARRY MET ALLEN [The following was written as liner notes for the Locust Music re-issue of New York Blues, recorded by Harry Smith and produced by Ann Charters.] Were prophecies evoked when The Fugs sang, “ Village Voice nothing, New Yorker nothing, Sing Out and Folkways nothing, Harry Smith and Allen Ginsberg, nothing, nothing, nothing? ” The song Nothing was included on The Fugs' First Album , produced by Harry Smith in 1965, almost a decade before Ginsberg and Smith combined their own talents for an impromptu (or was it planned?) recording session at the Chelsea Hotel. So then, might New York Blues be a representation of the existential nothing? Or is it really something? Allen Ginsberg met Harry Smith in 1959 at The Five Spot in New York City, where jazz pianist Thelonious Monk was enjoying one of his famous residencies. Ginsberg had only heard about Smith, but recognized him immediately. Smith was sitting at a table transcribing Monk’s eccentric melodies into impressionistic drawings. Allen would later describe that first vision of Smith in these terms, “slightly hunchback, short, magical-looking, in a funny way gnomish or dwarfish, same time dignified.” A chance meeting then? Not necessarily, considering the synchronistic Weltanschauung when it comes to all things Harry Smith. And just how much empyrean nonsense is it to infer that these two opposites did indeed attract? Surely the two men couldn’t have come from more contrasting orientations. One, a hermetic, neo-celibate whitebread record collector/visual artist from Oregon with roots in freemasonry and an attraction to occultisms. The other, a free-loving Buddhist Jew queer from Jersey who became reigning ambassador of the beat generation and a poet of Whitmanesque proportions.
