24-year-old classical concert pianist Soheil Nasseri is one of the most prolific young soloists in the history of New York City. In the last two seasons, he performed eight solo recitals at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, all performed entirely from memory and without repeating a single piece. Soheil's concerts this past season were sold out and on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 he will make his solo recital debut at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. He will give another solo recital on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, also at Alice Tully Hall. Soheil's concerts have been enthusiastically acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, but far from being just a piano-playing machine he has taken it upon himself to help expose a new generation of Americans to classical music. Soheil has been credited by some for drawing New York's most diverse and youthful audience to any classical concert series and his Alice Tully Hall recitals next season will offer $10 tickets to everyone ages 25 and under, without seating restrictions. In addition, Soheil recently embarked upon a major initiative to perform assembly concerts at
many of the public high schools in Washington, D.C. and New York City. He gave ten high school assembly concerts in inner-city Washington, D.C. recently where, to raucous excitement, Soheil prefaced playing Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann with rap and hip-hop jam sessions with students and teachers.

Samuel Zyman
Samuel Zyman
, a long-time New York-based Juilliard faculty member, is acknowledged as one of the leading Mexican composers on the international scene today. His music is characterized by intense and vigorous rhythmic energy, expressive lyricism, and the frequent use of near-jazzy imitative counterpoint. As Allan Kozinn of the New York Times put it recently (9/26/02), "in [Zyman's piano piece] ' Two Motions in One Movement ,' Impressionism and jazz wind around each other like vines." In addition to its rhythmic vitality and expressive melodic inventiveness, Zyman's music is often marked by a lucid structural conception and an intriguing mixture of Jewish and Latin American overtones. Paul Somers, of the New Jersey daily The Star-Ledger, called Zyman's piano concerto a work of "sheer breathtaking bravura." Philippa Kiraly of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer succinctly described Zyman's cello sonata as "exotic, propulsive, and intense." Samuel Zyman's music has been performed throughout the United States, Mexico, Latin America, Europe, and Russia, and is recorded on Island Records, I.M.P. Masters, Urtext Digital Classics, Ambassador, Sony Classics, EMI, and Quindecim. Zyman's Sonata for Flute and Piano has been heard almost every year at the annual National Flute Association Meeting since 1997, and is increasingly programmed as a repertoire piece by numerous flutists in the United States, Mexico, and other countries. Zyman's

Richard Johnson and Richard Turley get a groove on with the hippity-hoppity generation.
Photos by Karen Cunningham "Enough already with the octogenarians," the staffers at this magazine keep imploring the stuffy gerontophiles who host the Gotham dinners. In an effort to get "with it," Richard Johnson and Richard Turley decided to skew young for a change. On July 25, we invited the film actress Leelee Sobieski, who is 19 years old (we've got cats older than that); the painter Isca Greenfield-Sanders, who is 23; the concert pianist Soheil Nasseri, also 23; and, for gravity, the hip-hop impresario Damon Dash, who's pushing 32. We were welcomed at the Monkey Bar in the Hotel Elysee on East 54th Street by director of operations, Mathew Glazier. This sophisticated watering hole has been the refuge of theatrical legends like Tennessee, Tallulah, Marlene, and Noel. The cuisine is superb and the honky-tonk piano in the bar never takes a break. Oh yes, the plugs: Leelee has two films, Max and L'Idole , at the Toronto Film Festival this month. Isca shows at Lombard-Freid on West 26th Street. Soheil has four solo concerts this season at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, beginning September 17. And Damon is now directing a feature film called
