She even distinguished herself in this career as a concert performer graduated from the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo. However she found her true vocation: literary critique. That which she melodiously captivated with her fingers on the keyboard, she sought to subdue with an impressive consciousness of both the written word and her time. Hers is a work of clairvoyant humbleness, which enlightens written works, penetrates their hiding-places and labyrinths and discloses strange and estranged forms of beauty within a vaster and diligent project, that of the human condition. Nelly Novaes Coelho has thirty years of experience within the literary field, and it is tough to say which aspect of the career is greater: the critic (that brought her recognition), the cultural activist, the talent seeker, the passionate professor, the exemplary didactic or the creator of multiplicity. Or maybe that who bravely found a way of turning the Portuguese language into a nation. Nonetheless, the paths covered by this woman are amazing, always unstoppable, obstinate, enduring, lucid, inflamed with totality, bound to historical truth without ever separating thought from language. Published Sunday, October 14, 2001 Latina pianists shine with talent, tenacity BY JAMES ROOS jroos@herald.com The parade of classical pianists marching through South Florida this month includes three who upend the stereotype of the iron-fisted male in a tailcoat. They are fleet-fingered Latin ladies: Alicia de Larrocha, Zenaida Manfugás and Juana Zayas. De Larrocha, the acclaimed virtuosa from Barcelona, plays a wide repertoire convincingly but is closely identified with Spanish masters like Granados, whose music she'll celebrate Friday. Manfugás, who'll open FIU's Music Festival 2001 on Oct. 25, was a protégé of Ernesto Lecuona and the legendary Walter Gieseking, but is a comparatively well-kept secret. She never achieved extraordinary fame, in part because of racism. Zayas, who plays this afternoon at the University of Miami's Gusman Hall, and Thursday with the Symphony of the Americas in Broward, seems an even better kept secret. Like De Larrocha and Manfugás, she was weaned by her mother on music, then went to study abroad, where she won prizes, but married young and began raising a family. Combining motherhood and performances didn't work for her at that time, and now she's making a comeback. No matter the difference in details, each of these women has striven to fulfill their musical ideals.

Sein erster Klavierunterricht erhielt er im Alter von sechs Jahren von seiner Mutter, als die Eltern noch in einem brasilianischen Dorf auf dem Lande lebten. Noch als Kind reisste der Pianist wochentlich nach Curitiba, und spater als Jungling nach São Paulo, um qualifizierter Musikunterricht zu erhalten. Sein erster ofizieler Klavierlehrer war Daniel Costa da Silva, an der Escola de Música e Belas Artes do Paraná, in Curitiba. Wahrend seines Musikstudiums in seiner Heimat machte Noel Nascimento Kontakt mit bedeutenden Pianisten wie Luis Thomaszeck, Gilberto Tinetti, Arnaldo Estrela, Guiomar Novaes und Magda Tagliaferro, die ihm folglich auch in Paris als Schuler aufnahm.Von besonderer Bedeutung fur die Ausbildung des Pianisten waren die unterrichtstunden bei Luis Thomaszéck, ein fruhgestorbener Schuler von Claudio Arrau. Im Jahr 1979 reisste Noel Nascimento nach Munchen, um dort auf Empfehlung von Luis Thomaszéck bei Rafael de Silva, dem Assistenten von Claudio Arrau der in der bayerischen Haupstadt lebte, Unterricht zu erhalten. Bald machte der Pianist Bekanntschaft mit Claudio Arrau, bei dem er in den folgenden Jahren mehreren Unterrichtstunden hatte, wahrend der Konzertreisen des Meisters in Europa. The Piano in Classical Music T he piano is unique among musical instruments in its universal appeal. It has been adopted by and assimilated into every musical genre from jazz to rock and roll and everything between; nevertheless, the piano would never have achieved its standing among popular styles of music had it not been for the efforts of classical composers and musicians, and the craftsmen working on their behalf. It was their strong desire to compose for and perform on an instrument capable of limitless expressive potential which fueled the development of the piano as we know it today. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was one of the earliest converts to the modern piano. A composer of gifts in every way so vast that only the term 'genius' seems appropriate, Mozart was writing minuets at six years old that already surpassed the quality of his father's compositions. In fact, as a performing pianist from early childhood, Mozart composed much of the music he performed while on recital tours. There are astonishing descriptions of his harpsichord performances, with him improvising virtuoso works on the spot while blindfolded, or with a cloth covering the keyboard. Mozart embraced the technical advances made in the piano. It is in large part due to him that the instrument gained full acceptance in Europe. Mozart insisted on playing an updated piano he had tried in Vienna in 1777 for a series of concerts in Paris. The French, who had initially opposed the instrument, now recognized its value, and it soon thereafter became the standard concert instrument on European stages.

Though scored for the same orchestral resources (strings, flutes, oboes, horns, trumpets and drums) the two are utterly different in character, and provide a good instance of Mozart's habit of composing strongly contrasting works in pairs, the first stormy and passionate, the second a blend of the monumental and the poetic. This C major concerto was composed for Mozart's own performance at the subscription concerts in Vienna, where all these great works were heard for the first time. The choice of the neutral key of C gives Mozart scope for a wide range of subtle modulations, in the same imaginative style as we find in the superb string quartet and quintet and, of course, in the later piano concerto in the same key. Alumna KAREN AMANDA ALLEN has produced a CD of her chamber music compositions entitled Da Camera. DOMINIK ARGENTO'S (TC'50, 51, BM'51, MM'54) compositions A Water Bird Talk and Miss Havisham's Wedding Night, which are both one-act operas, were recorded by the Sinfonia of St. Cecilia under the baton of SARA WATKINS (PC'95) and has been released on the Koch International Label. AUGUSTUS BRATHWAITE (BM'68, MM'70) has recently been hired as a Curriculum Specialist with the Baltimore City Public Schools. For the past four years, he was a member of the music faculty at Morgan State University. STEVE BROWN (MM'96) won the bass trombone post-graduate division of the Classical Solo Competition held at the Eastern Trombone Workshop at Fort Myer in Arlington, VA. Mr. Brown is now a doctoral student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory. For the third consecutive year ROBERT CANTRELL (MM'90, GPD'92) performed the Priest and Somnus in the production of Handel's Semele at the Spoleto Festival Dei due Mondi in Italy. In November, he will sing the role of Escamillo in the Annapolis Opera's production of Carmen. Mr. Cantrell is on the faculty of the Baltimore School for the Arts.

Daniella Thompson 19 July 2002 Corso in Rio Le Boeuf sur le Toit or the names of their composers, but some images stayed with him for decades. In the unpublished article Bresilien Music I arrived in Brazil just in the middle of the carnaval. It is a time during which popular mirth bursts forth with a violence undreamed of by Europeans accustomed to the three days of festivity of a carnaval in Nice or Aix, interrupted by the sternness of Ash Wednesday giving way to Lent. In Brazil three days are not enough. During the months preceding a carnaval, one organizes it. Clubs are founded, a group of friends decides that they will remain together during the carnaval festivities and thus forms a committee with a president, a vice-president, a secretary and a treasurer. The major part of their savings goes into the making or the renting of gorgeous costumes, in which ostrich feathers play an important part. For several weeks on Saturday evenings these small clubs sing and dance along the streets; they take part in the popular dances held in public squares or enter the dance halls. In the country these same groups, seated on floats covered with foliage, sing their favorite songs on the roads, accompanied by the different instruments indispensable to all carnavalesque clubs.

Jonathan Woolf Pianist plus symphony: super Mozart April 28, 2001 Sonia Rubinsky is one of the leading pianists in her native Brazil, but not as yet too widely known in North America. That is Virginia's good fortune this weekend, as Rubinsky joins the Richmond Symphony in perhaps the finest performance of Mozart this orchestra has ever played. Rubinsky is the soloist in Mozart's Piano Con- certo No. 21 in C major, K. 467, one of the two memorable surprises in this program. The other employs every crowd-displeasing technique of modernism, yet holds audiences in thrall. Rubinsky's tone is crystalline, her marksmanship unerring. She phrases flexibly and ornaments freely but tastefully. But she earns her place among the piano masters of Mozart (Perahia, Uchida and Brendel, to name some names) because she knows how to differentiate Mozart's consonants from his vowels - playing rhythmically with a percussive edge and lyrically with a fluidity that makes the listener forget the piano makes sounds when hammers strike strings.

Program Notes for March 14-15, 2003 Anton Webern PASSACAGLIA, Opus 1 At the time Webern was composing the passacaglia, he was also finishing a doctorate in musicology at the University of Vienna. For his dissertation he analyzed and edited the Choralis Constantinus by renaissance composer Heinrich Isaac (1450-1517). From these historical studies Webern developed a lifelong interest in such contrapuntal procedures as passacaglia (used in Opus 1) and canon (used occasionally in Opus 1 and throughout many of his atonal and twelve-tone pieces). In 1904 Webern became the first private composition student of Arnold Schoenberg, who was then at the threshold of his career. Thirty years old, he was just emerging as a prominent composer working in a late tonal style. For him as for Webern, modernism and atonality still lay in the future. The younger composer showed his new teacher his most ambitious work to date, an orchestral piece called Im Sommerwind . Schoenberg advised Webern to avoid large ensembles for the time being and to concentrate on the string quartet. Thus, in the ensuing months he wrote several exercises and compositions for that medium, including the
