A Century of Great Pianists in 15, 000 Minutes
By David Stevens International Herald Tribune AMSTERDAM - The recording industry as a serious factor in musical life dates roughly from the beginning of the 20th century, which lends a fair amount of credence to the plethora of ''centennial'' editions crowding the shelves of record stores. The issuing of recorded historical musical anthologies has a relatively long history, and most of the centennial editions in the stores result from the periodic recycling efforts by record companies to get some extra mileage out of existing material. The edition, which Philips began issuing late last year and will continue to next fall, comprises 200 compact disks. They are packaged in units of two CDs each, about 150 minutes of music per unit. Units are devoted to 69 individual pianists, there is one piano duo, and in three cases the featured artist is joined by a partner for the occasional two-piano piece - Nadia Boulanger with Dinu Lipatti, Rosina Lhevinne with her husband, Josef, and Gaby Casadesus with her husband, Robert. Seven of the pianists, all celebrated and prolific recording artists, have three units devoted to them - Claudio Arrau, Alfred Brendel, Emil Gilels, Vladimir Horowitz, Wilhelm Kempff, Sviatoslav Richter and Arthur Rubinstein.

Music Director and Nominal Conductor for Petrobras Pro Music Orchestra - OPPM In 1986, he received the prize of Best Orchestral Conductor of the Year, granted by the Sao Paulo Art Critics Association - APCA. On the following year he was bestowed with the Recognition Award in the Area of Orchestral Regency, by the Prize Lei Sarney to Brazilian Culture. In 1995, he took over the place of Associated Director to the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra - OSB, of which he was also the Music Director until as late as 1997. Elected by Rio de Janeiro's critics as Musician of the year in 1995, he brought to OSB 's presentations and concerts great public and critic success. Invited by the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater, he performed, in the months of May and June of 1998, the Beethoven cycle, in which the 9 Symphonies, the 5 piano Concerts, the Triple Concert and the violine Concert were carried out. "The most substantial part was yet to come. Mikhail Rudy was a brilliant soloist of the Concert n. 1 (Tchaikovsky forever) for piano and orchestra. It is an old battlefield of the music rooms. With a great Orchestra and soloist such as these it is still sure to work out." (Luiz Paulo Horta, O Globo, April 4th ,2000).

Historical Reissues on Compact Discs "What would happen if, in order to reconstruct, say, the performance practice of Beethoven's day, we were to start not from modern style but from the style preserved on early gramophone records?
. . . . our conjectures would be quite different if we were living in the 1920s instead of the 1980s. Similarly 18th- and 19th-century descriptions of tempo rubato make a very different sort of sense if we take early, rather than late, 20th-century style as the starting point for comparison. My own very strong suspicion is that many of the habits preserved in early gramophone records had their origins at least as far back as Beethoven, and in some cases earlier. This is something to argue about, but one central point is indisputable: the styles of the early 20th century did not arise overnight. For this reason, if for no other, it is time for historically minded performers to start considering the implications of early gramophone records." Robert Philip

Tremendous technique
Recorded in 1966 in New York City, these studio performances are flawless yet spontaneous sounding. The actual sound quality of this CD is excellent. Her inclusion of Beethoven's last sonata, number 32 (opus 111) kicks this disc over the top into classic status.
