Noriko Ogawa (piano) Singapore SO/Lan Shui
rec Jan 1999, Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore BIS BIS-CD-1018 Crotchet Amazon UK Amazon USA Nikolai Tcherepnin was born in 1873 and died in 1945. Alexander was the son of Nikolai. His mother was a singer. He had two sons; both of them composers: Sergei (b.1941) and Ivan (1943-98). Alexander's music is tinged with 'soft' cut dissonance. It is for example nowhere near as 'thorny' as Rawsthorne or Frankel or Sessions; more like the effect of a single chili in a large savoury dish. It gives an edge - no more. Tcherepnin grew up in St Petersburg with Glazunov and Rimsky as house visitors. After the Revolution the family moved to Tbilisi, capital of Georgia. Tcherepnin developed a tonality system all his own and much harnessed to the melodic resource of Georgian folk music. In 1921 a move to Paris resulted in his joining a group of ex-pats livings there. His circle included Martinu and Tansman. He lived in China and Japan between 1934 and 1937. He married the concert pianist Lee Hsien Ming and spent the war years in Paris. In 1948 he emigrated to the USA living in Chicago and New York. Tcherepnin was a sensational concert pianist. BIS's project (financially supported by the Singapore SO's Ladies' League - to whom warm thanks are due!). is to record all four of the Tcherepnin symphonies and with this disc their project completes full circle. I hope in due course to complete the picture with a review of the first CD (BIS-CD-1017).

Welcome to my website. This page is just for news of recent and future performances. So far I've managed to avoid references to other "work", my little bit of teaching... of piano, cello and tai chi. Well, that's all I'll say on the matter! For professional information please use the links on the left, or contact me at ph.smith@virgin.net - thanks!
Colchester Piano Festival and gala concerts
In my last update I mentioned the Gala Concert which took place at St. Botolph's on February 16th. The new building works now provide superb backstage facilities and had been completed well before the concert. Noriko Ogawa played Rachmaninov's 2nd concerto and I played the 3rd, with the St.Botolph's Music Society Orchestra under Colin Nicholson. The event had been sold out for a long time so there was a real atmosphere of celebration. So we couldn't resist giving an encore: I picked up my cello and Noriko accompanied me in an arrangement of Rachmaninov's "Vocalise". I felt rather self-indulgent but it went down well! We decided to plan another big concerto event for February 15th, 2003. At the moment the plan is for Noriko to play Brahms no.1 and for me to play Brahms no.2. Perhaps the music is slightly less popular but it will be equally satisfying for us all.

Recorded in 1998 on the newly restored João Fontanes de Maqueixa 1765 organ in the São Vicente de Fora convent in Lisbon, this album of 16th and 17th century organ music is beautifully realized in every way. Brief vocal selections present the works that inspired these organ compositions by Antonio and Hernando de Cabezòn, Juan Cabanilles, Francisco Correa de Arauxo, Pedro de Araujo, Nicolas Gombert, Estacio Lacerna, and Cipriano de Rore. This organ does not include a pedal board but has a lovely selection of the stops that give the organs of the Iberian peninsula their unique character. The liner notes are extremely thorough, including a complete history of the instrument and the stop list for each of the selections, but they lack the customary cue list for the 19 works included on the back of the CD. The performances are faultless and the recorded sound is inspired. Highly recommended. -V. Wagner

    Versie: A
Uitvoerders: Stephen Hough, piano; City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra o.l.v. Sakari Oramo
    Referentie: Hyperion 67331/2
    Versie: C
Uitvoerders: Noriko Ogawa, piano; Tapiola Sinfonietta o.l.v.

In their time they attracted international attention and were issued by continental publishers; many of the finest violinists of the era made recordings of them.
