Russian Nights Series opens with 2 Singapore premieres The Singapore Symphony Orchestra showcases works of Russian composer Tcherepnin in its Russian Nights Series 20 January 2002 SINGAPORE
The First and Third Piano Concertos of Russian composer Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977) whose music is championed by the SSO and Music Director Lan Shui, come from an earlier period of the composer's very colourful life and bear the influences of two other Russian greats, Stravinsky and Prokofiev. Coupling the familiar with the obscure, the concert opens with Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture, a rousingly festive work with its bell-like sonorities and closes with Tchaikovsky's passionate symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini, inspired by the story of two ill-fated lovers from Dante's Inferno.
