Week of Choose a week This Week Friday, January 31, 2003 Ramon Vargas stamps his style on arias, songs of past More information:
  • EMI Classics Web site
  • RCA Red Seal Web site By ROBERT BAXTER Courier-Post Staff Ramon Vargas is challenging the great tenors of the past in a collection of Italian songs (RCA Red Seal 09026-63913- 2 ). Collectors with long memories have the voices of Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa and other tenors when they see the titles of these songs and arias from the 17th and 18th centuries. Vargas puts his own artistic stamp on these classic vocal works. He may lack the mellifluous tone of a Gigli or the beguiling grace of a Schipa but he sings simply and directly in a collection called In My Heart. Vargas sings with disarming ease in selections like Caccini's "Amirilli" and Paisiello's "Nel cor piu non me sento." His focused voice sounds smooth and even in all ranges and at all dynamic levels. And he uses that voice with immaculate musicianship and good taste. Accompanied by a small chamber ensemble, Vargas sings with understated elegance in selections by Marcello and Martini. He gives a classic account of Giordani's "Caro mio ben."

P ro Piano Records is part of a company which rents concert instruments, holds a recital series, and manages a group of outstanding classical artists. Their CD logo gives two possible meanings to their PPR logo: Pro Piano Records is obvious, but in small print next to their name is Pianist's Perspective Recording . It is this standard which makes this label so attractive to the lover of audiophile classical piano music. After listening to 15 of their CDs, I can say that a fair and accurate assessment of CDs is simple: excellent performance and sound. These recordings sparkle because of the musicians and because of the care with which Pro Piano records masters and manufactures them. My first taste of this label was the Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique" piano transcription by Walter Niemann performed by Chitose Okashiro reviewed separately on this site and can be seen by clicking here [Pro Piano Records PPR224530]. It was a superb recording - Okashiro is a brilliant and emotionally appealing pianist and the CD possessed excellent acoustical qualities.

T ranscribing music composed for other instruments or for ensembles of instruments for the piano has been around for a long time. One of the most famous transcribers, Johann Sebastian Bach, transcribed a number of concerti by Vivaldi for organ as well as the works of others and his own from one instrument or ensemble to another. This kind of borrowing and rewriting maintained some popularity for the next few centuries after Bach. In the late 19 th and the early 20 th century, transcriptions for piano became very popular. This period, a golden age of pianism, established the piano as a kind of precursor to the phonograph. Having a piano in the parlor was almost a necessity for admission to the genteel middle class. It was also a way of bringing culture into the home. For good reason, too was the piano the instrument of choice. The piano had huge advantages over other instruments. Only one instrument allowed a performer to cover most of the notes any orchestra could play. It also lent itself to reasonable sound no matter how much of a neophyte the pianist might be. With improvements to the action, it became capable of the very loud sound we know today, so that it also became a fixture in schools, town halls, taverns and church halls. During this period, there were many accomplished pianists. As a result, transcribing great symphonic works for piano became a way of spreading symphonic music throughout the pre-phonograph world without the expense of a full orchestra. Many of these transcriptions are still being played. One example is particularly famous: Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's ninth symphony, which is still performed. Now, a new generation of piano virtuosi, such as Stephen Hough, Arcadi Volodos and Marc-André Hamelin have dug through the archives and resurrected a number of great transcriptions by such composers as Busoni and Rachmaninoff. Hamelin, Volodos and others are also creating their own brilliant transcriptions.

Sakamoto wrote the music for the films The Last Emperor and Snake Eyes and for the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics. The piano music, as represented here, falls into two broadly defined camps. The first ( Suite and La Dispersion, La Limite, Le Sable , 1970 and 1976 respectively) is trendily avant-garde (at least for the 1970s) as spun by Messiaen and Stockhausen. The second camp further falls into two sections. The first is best grouped with Kapustin (whose own interpretations are soon to be issued by Boheme International in a 2CD set previously limited to the Japanese market), Lionel Sainsbury and Billy Mayerl. In this mode he is jazzy in a cool Manhattan way as in Tong Poo (where the second pianist is J Y Song) and Grasshoppers . The second is closer to Satie and Ravel. I single out the slow-swirling gauze of Bachata , the gracious old world dream dances of Intermezzo , the grace of Energy-Flow , the glycerine-filtered nostalgia of Parisian memories in Chanson and the Satiesque stillness of Lorenz and Watson

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Category : Classical - Instrumental This set of the almost complete Mozart sonatas (Kraus skipped the F major, K.533) was recorded by the Haydn Society in 1954. The first most notable thing about these new transfers by Music and Arts is just how clear the sound has become. For a moment, I was actually wondering if this was in stereo or mono! Background hiss has been reduced to an unobtrusive minimum, passage work emerges with a freshness, warmth and clarity surprising for a recording made in mono sound in the early 50s, with no clangy or brittle quality at all. Moving to the performances, there is just so much to say about them that it is best left to the ear of the individual listener to decide and to discover for himself. Yes, discovery is just the word to describe each time one listens to these CDs, and what a journey this proves to be, right from the earliest sonatas here, which emerge with not just youthfulness but wide-eyed innocence as well. Her playing is distinguished by nobility, grace and refinement. It would not be accurate to call these fragile readings in the way many of today's female pianists' performances turn out to be, nor is Kraus an overwhelming authoritarian just as Sviatoslav Richter was in such repertoire. Kraus is assertive yet gracious without ever being polite and overly 'correct'; individual, and also highly intelligent what a great hostess she makes as she invites you into her world and takes you on an eye-opening tour of this core Mozartian repertoire.
