Piano Grand Finale!
May 1-June 3, 2001 Events
During final month of the Piano 300 exhibition at the Smithsonian International Gallery there are many opportunities to hear superb pianists in a variety of musical styles. The "Piano Grand Finale!" will include extra performance tours and gallery talks, a reprise of last year's popular Art Night on the Mall featuring students from the Levine School, and more. Most of the programs listed below are free, and many take place in the exhibition itself, affording visitors a final opportunity to hear many of the historic instruments on display. Over 225,000 have visited the exhibition (through early April 2001), thousands more have visited the exhibition's website (www.piano300.org), and special public programs presented at various venues around the Smithsonian have been enormously popular. Though the exhibition will close on June 3, the National Museum of American History will continue its long-standing tradition of providing a wide variety of exhibition-related programs (visit www.americanhistory.si.edu

Piano Concerto Violin Concerto Lambert Orkis, piano Gregory Fulkerson, violin Symphony II Richard Wernick, conductor - Piano Concerto Larry Rachleff, conductor - Violin Concerto BRIDGE 9082 Richard Wernick’s music is much admired among a growing group of fans. The premiere recordings of these two major scores add significantly to the Wernick discography and reveal a composer of passion and vision. Played brilliantly by pianist Lambert Orkis, Wernick’s Piano Concerto is a work that reconciles modernism with classical architecture- a work of extreme contrast and overreaching unity. The composer leads Symphony II in an impassioned reading. Wernick’s Violin Concerto is given a heroic performance by soloist Gregory Fulkerson, and Symphony II, led by music director, Larry Rachleff. Wernick’s virtuoso orchestral accompaniment is played with great intensity by Symphony II- otherwise known as the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra, and is captured in hair-raising sonics!

Best SellingClassical CDs
Simply put, 1999 was a great year for classical music. And the year's Grammy Awards in classical categories gave ample proof of an abundance of musical riches. Pierre Boulez and Michael Tilson Thomas were classical music's Santanastwo conductors with multiple nominations. But they also reveal how cutting-edge classical Grammy picks are when compared to Grammy's pop fare. Here are some of the top classical winners, along with our thoughts (and, in some cases, our own choices). Classical Album
    Winner:
"Stravinsky: Firebird; The Rite of Spring; Persephone" Michael Tilson Thomas, cond.; San Francisco Symphony Orchestra CD on Sale here!
The success of this record (it actually won Grammys for Best Classical Engineered Album and Best Orchestral Performance, as well) is a testament to Michael Tilson Thomas's creative programming. He wisely chose to include "Persephone," Stravinsky's seldom-heard retelling of the Greek myth, over more ballet music, making this disc a gem for Stravinsky lovers. A winner of Grammys back in 1975 and 1996, the conductor has star appeal and a love for modern works. For the millennial Grammy Awards, you couldn't ask for a more appropriate winner. Our Pick:
    "Mahler: Symphony No. 1"

James Primosch When honoring him with its Goddard Lieberson Fellowship, the American Academy of Arts and Letters noted that "A rare economy of means and a strain of religious mysticism distinguish the music of James Primosch... Through articulate, transparent textures, he creates a wide range of musical emotion." Andrew Porter stated in The New Yorker that Primosch "scores with a sure, light hand" and critics for the New York Times , the Chicago Sun-Times , the Philadelphia Inquirer , and the Dallas Morning News have characterized his music as "impressive", "striking", "grandly romantic", "stunning" and "very approachable." A native of Cleveland, Ohio, and a student of George Crumb, Mario Davidovsky and Richard Wernick at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University, Primosch's music has been heard throughout the United States and in Europe and Asia, including performances by such ensembles as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Collage, the Twentieth Century Consort, and Speculum Musicae. His Icons was played at the ISCM/League of Composers World Music Days in Hong Kong, and Dawn Upshaw included a song by Mr. Primosch in her Carnegie Hall recital debut.

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach How does a fugue out of the "well-tempered-piano" by Bach sound, if you play all possible pitches at the same time? And how do you manage to shift the indispensable piano to the 5th floor without an elevator? These points, the female actor and composer Dodo Schielein is engaged in, might not be crucial ones in music history; in any case they are very unusual. The music of J.S. Bach inspired her to experiment with sound in a rather unique way: by using special cluster boards she condenses a fugue to a sound performance of only a few seconds. The short film of Susann S. Reck shows on one hand the actor working with a cluster board while on the other hand - contrapuntally - a piano is transported to her flat: You can't play a "well-tempered-piano" without worrying about transport first.

Sebastian Currier News List of Works Biography Discography ... Audio Clips Biography The music of composer Sebastian Currier has been performed worldwide in major cities such as Paris, Rome, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow. London and Toronto. In the United States, his works have been performed in Carnegie Hall in New York, Symphony Hall in Boston, Kennedy Center in Washington and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. His work Aftersong was written for the world-renowned violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter who, with pianist Lambert Orkis, premiered the work at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, performed it at the Salzburg Festival, and then throughout the rest of Europe and the United States. Ms. Mutter and Mr. Orkis also performed another work of his, Clockwork, in major cities in Europe and Asia. He has received a Rome Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, several awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Friedheim Award, a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Tanglewood Fellowship, and as held residencies at the MacDowell and Yaddo Colonies. Commissions include Fromm Foundation, Koussevitzky Foundation, Barlow Endowment, Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust and the American Composers Orchestra. A CD of his works performed by the ensemble Mosaic was recently released on New World Records. It includes Vocalissimus, which features soprano Susan Narucki in a work that sets the same short poem of Wallace Stevens eighteen different ways - each from a different point of view. We hear a formalist, a Mystic, a recluse, a satirist, an Introvert, and many others offer their unique interpretation of the poem. Next is Theo's Sketchbook, a work for piano, performed by Emma Tahmizian. This work is an anthology of the life's work of an imaginary composer - Theo - from his juvenilia to his last piece, a lullaby for his granddaughter. The CD concludes with a work commissioned by Mosaic specifically for the recording for the core members Zizi Mueller, Emma Tahmizian, Fred Sherry, and Daniel Druckman, Whispers.
