Three recent reviews:
"Gearhart and Owings have been performing together since 1989. On the basis of what I am hearing here, violinist Fritz Gearhart is a treasure whose value the wider public has yet to discover. His clear, communicative tone conveys Casadesus's shades of light and darkness, and his temperament doesn't shortchange the music's emotions...John Owings plays brightly and is up to the technical challenges that Casadesus set. Together, Gearhart and Owings have a true musical partnership. One needs no lesswhen playing the violin works of a master pianist!...this CD, so musically satisfying, is an audiophile treat as well. This gets an enthusiastic thumbs up from me." Fanfare

Music Review Little-Known Works of a Renowned French Pianist. The pianist John Owings, winner of first prize in the Casadesus Competition in 1976, its inaugural year, and the violinist Fritz Gearhart gave a supple and imaginative account of a sweetly modal "Hommage à Chausson." On his own, Mr. Owings excitingly dispatched the fingertwisting double-note passages in Casadesus's relentless 1946 Toccata, which mixes syncopated rhythms borrowed from jazz with grim modal harmonies. PROVENANCE
The B. Carroll Reece Museum Records were transferred from the museum to the University Archives on January 15, 1986 by Helen Roseberry. They were opened for research January 1987. HISTORICAL NOTE
According to an article in the Johnson City Chronicle , dated November 23, 1933, "The museum (at State Teachers College) began as a history project..." which proved to be the birth of the repository which ultimately emerged as the B. Carroll Reece Museum. Dr. C. C. Sherrod, college president, personally solicited gifts to be housed in a ". . . large, fireproof library in which we are setting apart one whole floor for a museum." Dr. Burgin E. Dossett, college president (1949-1968), recommended to the State Board of Education in August 1961 that ". . . East Tennessee State College be given permission to accept Congressman [B. Carroll] Reece's . . . library, congressional reports, congressional files, and numerous personal materials of educational and historical value . . . " Later that same month Dr. Dossett informed Mrs. Reece that the State Board of Education had unanimously accepted the gift and had given authority ". . . to accept contributions in the name of the College for the erection of a building to house the collection." The present building was remodeled through state funds and funds collected through a Memorial Committee.

Doskey to Perform Music of Franz Liszt.
On Wednesday, October 17, 8:00 p.m., in the A. J. Fletcher Recital Hall, professor Henry Doskey will offer a piano recital featuring the music of Franz Liszt. "I wanted to reacquaint myself with some pieces I love very much," he says. . "Students don't get to hear this kind of playing very often," Doskey says. He explains that Liszt was one of the great virtuosos of all time. "When you play Liszt, you expect to face a lot of difficulties. It's an extremely ambitious program. Most of the works are at a high level of virtuosity." Memorizing the works adds to the difficulty of the performance. Vocal Studies faculty member Jean-Ronald LaFond , baritone, will present a concert Thursday evening, October 18, at 8 PM in the A.J. Fletcher Recital Hall. LaFond has degrees from Westminster Choir College and the University of Michigan. At home on the operatic stage as well as the concert platform, he has performed nearly thirty operatic roles in his young career. Collaborating with LaFond will be guest pianist Dalton Baldwin , who has worked with many of the great singers of our time, including Gerard Souzay, Elly Ameling, Jessye Norman, Jose Van Dam, Frederica von Stade, Teresa Berganza, Nicolai Gedda, William Parker, and Arlene Auger. Baldwin teaches at the Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N.J., and gives master classes throughout the United States, Europe, and the Orient. The duo will perform works of Schubert, Strauss, Debussy, and Reynaldo HahnFetes.

March 24, 2003 Author: David Weaver MARSHALL, Texas (3/24/03) East Texas Baptist University is already known as “Tiger Country.” But it became known as “Sarge the Tiger Country” Monday. ETBU introduced its new, live tiger mascot, “Sarge,” to students, faculty and staff to begin chapel and then hosted the 10-month old, 120-pound Siberian tiger for photos throughout the day. Sarge’s appearance on Monday was the official start of an agreement between ETBU and Tiger Creek Wildife Refuge in Tyler to “adopt” the tiger, which will be the first live mascot of the university.
