NSU orchestra performs Peter and the Wolf By Bob Pore - Campus Reporter On Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m., the University Civic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Fokkens, performed Peter and the Wolf by Sergey Prokofiev, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto Peter and the Wolf However, that was not the case for Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto . The french horns were sometimes a little too loud and would drown out the rest of the orchestra. Despite this, they could play quietly when necessary, and the piano soloist, John Owings, could always be heard. Owings is a magnificent pianist, and he played the solo part very well, always managing to keep up with the pace in the first and third movements. And the orchestra, when it wasn’t being drowned out, provided him with good accompaniment. Overall, it was a very good concert. This site designed by

    UO responds to diversity concerns
Task forces appointed by President Dave Frohnmayer following a May 18 sit-in at Johnson Hall have begun addressing issues of racial diversity and personal safety raised by students during the peaceful protest. Dave Hubin, executive assistant president, says the work groups expect to prepare draft materials by the end of spring term and will continue their work this fall as their focus shifts toward longer-term goals of helping to make the university a more safe and welcoming environment for everyone. The task forces leaders and their assignments are:
    • Robert Melnick, Architecture and Allied Arts dean, who is working with Public Safety and the students in the Planning, Public Policy and Management class who received threatening e-mail letters. Their goal is to ensure the safety of the students.
    • Tom Hager, Communications director, who is working with President Frohnmayer and a group of student volunteers to craft a letter or statement to submit to the Oregon Daily Emerald and other media outlets. They also are working with students to draft a statement supporting zero tolerance of hate crimes. Their goal is to craft a statement that can be embraced by the university community and shared widely with the larger community.
    • Dan Williams, Administration vice president, Wes Morrill, dean of student life, and other members of the Student Life staff and a group of student volunteers who have begun reviewing policies protecting victims of hate crimes and sanctioning offenders. They will draft language that could strengthen the policies.
