A true Canadian ambassador of music, Mr. Parker has given two command performances for Queen Elizabeth II, and has performed for the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan, and for the United States Supreme Court. Equally eclectic in recording, Mr. Parker's previous recordings for Telarc have included a solo Chopin album, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev Piano Concerti with Andre Previn, and a recent venture into comedy as Peter Schickele's pianistic sparring partner in the "Concerto for Two Pianos vs. Orchestra" by the fabled P.D.Q. Bach. Last spring Telarc released a new recording of Jon Kimura Parker performing the Samuel Barber Piano Concerto with Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony. On New Year's Eve, 1995, Jon Kimura Parker gave a benefit performance of Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto in war-torn Sarajevo. The concert, sponsored by AmeriCares, was televised live in 59 countries worldwide, and was covered by CNN.

SSO/Zinman/Jon Kimura Parker
May 31 2002 SSO/ZINMAN/JON KIMURA PARKER Reviewed by Peter McCallum Opera House, May 29 Pairing Brahms's Second Piano Concerto and Second Symphony had a neat symmetry on paper, but before actually hearing American conductor David Zinman (now director of Zurich's Tonhalle Orchestra) conduct it, I wondered if combining these two major-key works might end up being a bit too genial. There is a lot of non troppo in these works and, in some hands, too much of Brahms's "sunny mood" can be enervating. Yet I found myself absorbed from one well-balanced chord to the next well-paced phrase, so that the whole thing unfolded in long arches and broad spans, with precision, discipline, refinement and, at the best moments, a kind of radiant clarity. Stepping in at short notice for the concerto, Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker was a cheerful and capable accomplice. The first movement was precise and disciplined, resisting the temptation to wallow.

Pianist delights by delivering the unexpected By Melinda Bargreen

Seattle Times music critic E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive You never know what Jon Kimura Parker will come up with when he starts improvising on a Mozart cadenza. In the past, he has embroidered the Mozartean themes with "Star Trek" and "X-Files" snippets, all tastefully interwoven into the fabric of the music. On Friday night at the Summer Festival of the Seattle Chamber Music Society, Parker went on musical walkabout again in a performance of the Mozart Piano Concerto in E-Flat (K.449) with a string quartet (Ida Levin, Ruggero Allifranchini, Aloysia Friedmann and Godfried Hoogeveen) replacing the orchestra. The Seattle Chamber Music Society's Summer Festival
Friday recital and concert, Lakeside School (concerts continue through July 26; 206-283-8808). The first-movement cadenza had a nod to a "Wizard of Oz" Fantasy Parker had played earlier in the pre-concert recital, and one of the first-movement themes from the Franck Piano Quintet that concluded the program. Very neat. That's when he performed Bach's "Italian" Concerto, Ravel's shimmering "Jeux d'Eau" and a frankly impossible William Hirtz "Wizard of Oz" Fantasy that sounded like at least three pianists playing at once. It was vintage Parker: ebullient, supercharged, technically dazzling.

On Monday, February 4 all Mount Allison students had the opportunity to escape the bitterly cold weather and forget about the stress of midterms for a few hours while hearing an exceptional Canadian pianist perform in Brunton Auditorium. We all owe this privilege to the generous donation by Mrs. Pauline Spatz in memory of her husband, Dr. Albert Spatz, through which a member of Piano Six comes to the Music Department each year to host a master class and give a recital. Piano Six is a group of six Canadian pianists whose initiative is to bring quality performances of classical music to small communities across Canada. This year Jon Kimura Parker stopped over to dazzle us with his technical facility and overall musicianship while also inspiring those of us studying music who may have forgotten what it is all supposed to be about. In a situation that can easily feel intimidating to the student, Parker's first priority was to create an informal atmosphere. From there, Parker was able to offer critical comments and suggestions, while still noting the positive in each performance. That same evening, Parker walked onto the stage in Brunton Auditorium sat at the piano and didn't pause even long enough to see if he was in line with the piano before plowing into the opening boisterous phrase of J. S. Bach's Italian Concerto BWV 971. One can see how well-suited such triumphant music is to his personality. The perfect union of Parker's technique and energy was seen in his performance of the third movement, a movement in which a lot of pianists take a more conservative tempo in order to get through all the passage work. Parker, however, set a very lively tempo, handled the movement with ease, eagerly placed the final triumphant chord and just as quickly rose from the piano bench, bowed, and paraded off-stage.

Music Review

By Melinda Bargreen
Seattle Times Music Critic
The playing was hot enough to melt the rosin right off the strings, and the eight players of an adrenaline-charged Mendelssohn Octet had just finished a first movement so incandescent that first violinist William Preucil had trouble staying in his chair. Artistic co-directors Aloysia Friedmann, a violist, and her pianist husband, Jon Kimura Parker, have assembled a corps of musicians that proves talent does indeed run in families. Friedmann was joined by her father, Martin Friedmann, on viola; Parker by his pianist brother, James. Preucil was joined by his violinist wife, Gwen Starker Preucil, his sister, Jeanne Preucil Rose, and her husband, Stephen Rose. The cellists were Toby Saks (artistic director of the Seattle Chamber Music Society Summer Festival) and Desmond Hoebig, who (like J.K. Parker) teaches at Rice University. It was the Mendelssohn, however, that made the pulses hum. Whipped into a frenzy by Preucil in the first-violin chair, the players responded with the kind of viscerally exciting music that raises listeners right out of their seats. If music is the universal language, this Mendelssohn Octet makes linguists of us all.

Quality performances drive chamber fest Wednesday, July 10, 2002 By R.M. CAMPBELL
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC This is not the first summer the Seattle Chamber Music Festival has gotten off to a booming start, from musical and box-office viewpoints. MUSIC REVIEW SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL MUSICIANS: Godfried Hoogeveen, Adam Neiman, Wendy Chen, Alex Klein, Ida Levin, Jon Kimura Parker and others
WHEN: Monday night; festival runs through July 26
WHERE: Lakeside School
TICKETS: $25-$32, with student/senior discounts; 206-283-8808 But the 2002 season has the earmarks of an exceptional summer. At the opening of the second week of the monthlong festival Monday night at Lakeside School, there was an audible buzz to borrow Tina Brown's famous phrase during her days at the New Yorker about the previous week. Not only was the music making top-notch, two nights were sold out. A capacity audience also filled St. Nicholas Hall on Monday and will again at tonight's concert. Next week is sold out, as is the final concert July 26. Connie Cooper, the festival's capable executive director who was all smiles Monday, predicted that 10 of the 12 concerts this season will end up with no empty seats.

A wonderful week of chamber music Strong programming enhanced by superb performances Monday, July 8, 2002 By PHILIPPA KIRALY
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER This year's summer festival of the Seattle Chamber Music Society is already, after one week, shaping up as one of the strongest in recent memory, both in programming and in the quality of performance. MUSIC REVIEW SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY WHEN: Wednesday and Friday nights
WHERE: Lakeside School Wednesday's and Friday's recitals and concerts at Lakeside School contained one deeply satisfactory performance after another. Lines for the complimentary recitals in McKay Chapel stretched around the buildings 20 minutes before the start, each recital an appropriate forerunner for the ensuing concert. Pianist Jeremy Denk and baritone Randall Scarlata each spoke briefly about the music and their roles before performing a variety of Schubert and Ravel songs. Denk commented that, as pianist, "I'm the singer's second soul, the mirror image," and the performances indeed seemed a wordless communication of minds, with deeply expressive results.
