'Greatness in music? That's an important question. Music has to appeal at many different levels - intellectually, emotionally, metaphysically, spiritually. Every note has to have a reason for being. Biographie

A grand pianist: Murray Perahia's mastery and modesty go hand in hand

By Melinda Bargreen
Seattle Times music critic E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive Piano fanatics tend to have fierce admiration for their favorites and scorn for the less-admired, but there is a particular and widespread reverence for one virtuoso: Murray Perahia. Maybe it's because we almost lost him a decade ago, when a persistent and career-threatening thumb injury in 1991 led to a 1996 surgery and a long recuperative period during which it was unclear whether he would ever play again. After his return, no one would ever take this pianist for granted again. Whatever the reasons, Perahia's recital at Meany Theater next Tuesday is a hotly awaited event in a springtime that is bringing a veritable parade of great pianists to the area: Andras Schiff, John O'Conor, Vladimir Feltsman, Ian Hobson (all of these within the past few weeks); Ralf Gothóni (tomorrow and Sunday with the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, 206-343-0445); and Alfred Brendel (April 16 in a Benaroya Hall recital, 206-215-4747).

Before embarking on a solo piano career, he completed an unusually full musical formation by spending summers at Marlboro, Vermont , where he was encouraged by Rudolf Serkin, and collaborated in chamber music with Casals and members of the Budapest Quartet.  During this period, he also studied with veteran pianist Mieczslaw Horszowski.  In March 1972 he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and later that year won first prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition. Perahia’s sensibility and the naturalness and lyrical impulse of his phrasing, together with the finish of his playing, were always recognized as exceptional.  After his first prize at the

Biography
Murray Perahia is an American of Sephardic (Spanish-Jewish) descent. Today, he lives in London. He was born in New York City in 1947. His parents taught him to play the piano at the age of 3. In 1952, he began to take lessons for the next twelve years with Jeanette Haien, the assistant of Abran Chasins. In addition, he took music lessons at the High School of Performing Arts.
At 17, Murray Perahia began to study at the New York Mannes College of Music where he not only improved his piano playing but also graduated in conducting and composition with Carl Bamberger. He also took private lessons with the pianists Mieczyslaw Horszowski and Artur Balsam. In those years, he mostly listened to recordings by Horowitz, Clifford Curzon, Schnabel and his teacher Horszowski.
Perahia's later friendship with the pianist of the 20th century, Vladimir Horowitz, was an inspiration for Perahia, not only regarding his piano play, but also in respect to his personality.
At the invitation of Rudolf Serkin, Perahia played four times in a row at the Marlboro Festival for chamber music in Vermont. There, he performed with Serkin, Pablo Casals, Alexander Schneider and the Budapest String Quartet.

The Murray Perahia recital at Stanford University took place at exactly the same time as pianist Dubravka Tomsic's appearance with the Monterey Symphony. Therefore, Erik Dyar agreed to step in as a guest critic for the event. Mr. Dyar, although an architect by profession is an accomplished pianist and played a solo recital in Carmel, California earlier this year.
Those people fortunate enough to be present to hear a recital by pianist Murray Perahia at Memorial Auditorium on the Stanford University Campus Sunday afternoon, were treated to a rare and richly satisfying musical experience. Setting the mood for the main work to come, the concert began with four Bach-Busoni Chorale Prelude transcriptions Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 645, Nun komm der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659, Nun freut euch, lieben Christen, BWV 734, Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639

BACH FOR ALL TIMES
Bach's Goldberg Variations
Murray Perahia
Sony 89243-2
To anyone who was still musically impressionable in the 1960s that turbulent era when various cultural battle lines were being drawn, including those which surrounded the emerging Baroque Authenticity movement Glenn Gould's first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations (Sony 38479) remains a benchmark against which all subsequent versions of the great Baroque contribution to variation form continues to be judged. Gould's complete re-thinking of the piece in 1981 was no less provocative (Sony 37779), while more recent accounts particularly the vivid Hyperion outing by Gould's young compatriot, Angela Hewitt (CDA 67305) have added to our appreciation and understanding of Bach's infinitely various invention.
Now comes what may well be the most completely satisfying version of the Goldberg Variations yet recorded: a new Sony recording (SK 89243) by pianist Murray Perahia. Like Gould, Perahia possesses an enormous and instantly recognizable musical personality, yet unlike the often zany Canadian, he is less willing to let that personality intrude on his music-making. What emerges is a Goldberg Variations in which the details and insights flow with the utmost ease and naturalness, a performance in which warmth, brilliance and an almost other-worldly purity fuse into an unusually satisfying whole. As in his superb recordings of the English Suites, Perahia's approach to Bach remains wonderfully unforced and thoroughly pianistic: the playing, in its rhythmic subtlety and clarity of inner voicing is never less than sensational, while the interpretation itself is one with no stylistic axes to grind.
