His interpretation of the set of Mozart Piano Concertos was for me until now his supreme and unsurpassed achievement. However, his recordings of Bach's keyboard music, starting with the English Suites 1,3 and 6 (a 1998 Grammy Award) and, most recently, the Goldberg Variations suggest that Bach, even more than Mozart, may bring the best from Perahia's outstanding talent. Certainly, his 'Goldbergs' have attracted immense crtitical acclaim. His unmannered virtuosity, his tonal variety and delicacy of touch and his sympathetic and intelligent performance of this most monumental or works marks out this recording as almost certainly the best interpretation to date. Perahia has, as they say, raised the bar. For those unfamiliar with this work - or those in general not drawn towards solo piano performances - this recording can in particular be recommended. Bach's brilliance and inventive genius is revealed in all its glory by a master artist.

When he was seventeen he entered the Mannes College of Music, where he graduated in conducting and composition. Keyboard pyrotechnics are not a conspicuous part of his armoury and he has never specialised in the bravura parts of the repertory, but Chopin's two sets of studies present much more than just the technical challenge their title suggests. This 2 nd disc has nos. 2,4, and 5. The recorded sound is superb, as it was for the first disc. Not unexpected, Perahia is always "right on the money." Tempos, inflections, rubato, and intonation are perfect. Good taste just leaps out of the speakers. Yet, although satisfied, I was never moved by Perahia's versions. I felt that I'd heard it all before. As an example, hearing the beginning of the 2nd English Suite, my mind wandered to the Woody Allen movie, Crimes and Misdemeanors. Sometimes, I thought of Schiff's recordings on London. I simply did not find anything truely distinctive or unique. To be sure, this is fine Bach by a master pianist. I'll keep listening with the hope that distinctive treasures are there to be found. If that does not happen, I still have an expert set which is one notch above the set by Schiff. Murray Perahia's first journey into the baroque repertoire has certainly left an impact on it's audience, as profound as any. After a thumbinjury that fortunatly did not affect Mr. Perahia's musicianship in any other way than giving him the opportunity to devote himself to the studies of new repertoire, this remarkable pianist has come back with what has proved to be one of 1997's finest pianorecordings. For this disc he was, not surprisingly, honoured with the prestigious Gramophone award in the "Instrumental" category. Personally, I first heard the record in a store in London in the spring of 97 while I, with some dismay, was watching the long line in front of the cash register. Quite by chance I went to the nearest listening station where this disc was among the choices. It took me, I think, only a few seconds to absolutely love Perahia's Händel suites. I still shudder at the thought of not having come across this disc, although the mediacoverage it recieved later on surely would have caught my attention. The Händel suites have regretably been standing in the monumental shadow of Bach's more well known cousins, and have never really been given the attention and admiration they surely deserve. Not untill Richter and Gavriliov with their great performances of them, made the musicworld open it's eyes. Now it is Perahia that again have brought some well deserved attention upon them, through his brilliant recording.

JS Bach: Goldberg Variations Murray Perahia, piano Pianist Murray Perahia calls Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations for keyboard "one of the greatest monuments of the literature," and his new Sony Classical recording of the work arrives just as the world of music commemorates the 250th anniversary of Bach's death. Performing the work on a modern piano, Perahia continues his exploration of Bach's keyboard music. "The Goldberg Variations is a piece I've always wanted to play, maybe for 25 years, because it is such a monumental piece, such a challenge and such a beautiful piece, such an expression of joy," Perahia says. "I always wanted to play it, but I had never felt quite ready. I now believe that I've come to a point of view about the piece, and that it has some validity." To prepare the Goldberg Variations, Perahia studied and explored the work in his studio for two years before adding it to his performing repertoire.
