On the night of February 21, 2001, Grammy awards will be given out to pop bands, rock bands, boy bands, girl groups, heavy metal acts, and acoustic pioneers. Madonna will make an appearance, as will Enrique Iglesias and Paul Simon. There will be glitzy production numbers and wooden acceptance speeches. Outfits and hair styles will be critiqued; losers will say it was an honor just to be nominated; high-fives will be exchanged among the victorious. But not all the nominees for this year's Grammys will appear on the CBS telecast; in fact, only about thirty of the one hundred nominated categories will have their awards handed out live. Many of the smaller categories, such as folk, bluegrass, reggae, and spoken word, will have their winners mentioned, but usually only in a quick crawl of words across the bottom of the screen either going into or coming out of commercial breaks. It goes without saying: winners in the Polka category (yes, there is a polka category) do not come up on stage to accept their trophy. Even for the world's most talented musicians, fame can be awfully fleeting.

Bach is still alive. This is superb. Review Summary: Murray Perahia's Bach - Rating:
The first thing one notices about Murray Perahia's latest recording of Bach keyboard concertos is the brisk tempo, the ebullient phrasing, and rhythmically incisive orchestral playing that carries the listener along from note to note in breathless anticipation. At the helm of the impeccable Academy of St. Martins in the Field, Murray Perahia's conducting skills are as impressively arrayed here as his keyboard virtuosity. Which brings us to the second thing: Murray Perahia as soloist, and the dawning awareness that we may quite possibly be hearing the greatest Bach interpreter of our day. Both as piano soloist and conductor, Perahia deals elegantly with issues of balance that inevitably arise when performing early music on modern instruments. Concertos written for harpsichord take on a very different texture when played on a modern concert grand; the ringing tone and sheer volume of the piano can easily dominate the strings in ways not envisioned by the composer. But in these performances the relationship of strings to keyboard solo has been deftly re-calibrated. The piano and orchestra become equal partners, parts of an integrated whole, woven together as seamlessly as if this were chamber music.

Recent releases: Chopin Etudes Murray Perahia / Sony Classical / 4 stars
By Patricia Beach Smith Bee Arts Critic
If Frederic Chopin's Etude No. 3 in A minor on this CD doesn't make you weep, you aren't listening especially well to this sensitive recording by the perhaps perfect pianist Murray Perahia. Sentimentality isn't the point here, however; an extraordinary keyboard experience is. In his performance of 24 of the most difficult piano exercises ever written, Perahia should astound even the most jaded of listeners with his incredible technique and mastery of the literature at hand. A dozen etudes (studies) from Opus 10 and another dozen from the later Opus 25 are included. Some will be familiar. The intelligence and acumen required to play them aren't for most of us. These are pieces that must have challenged even Chopin's friend, the amazing Franz Liszt, to whom the first 12 are dedicated. (The later opus of etudes was dedicated to Countess Marie d'Agoult, a writer and Liszt's lover.) Listen closely and you'll sometimes wonder, "Can this be a human playing?" Check out track 16, the racy Etude No. 4 in A minor that can't make up its mind what key it's in, or the hand-numbing "Octaves" Etude No. 10 in B minor. Egads! But indeed, the human at the end of those fingers is real. The only thing bad about the CD is that after you have listened to it, exhaustion sets in and one begins to hope the pianist didn't have to do this all in one session.

While Torelli and Vivaldi may have invented and refined the solo concerto, it was Johann Sebastian Bach who moved the keyboard to centre stage, thus introducing a dramatic and virtuosic instrumental form that has enjoyed immense popularity ever since. Of Bach's many contributions to Western music, none, arguably, has been of greater significance than his creation of the keyboard concerto.
How refreshing it is to hear the finest of today’s instrumentalists playing Bach again. Following the superb Kennedy release in our last booklet, this new disc follows Perahia’s acclaimed recordings of solo Bach with an impassioned performance of these masterpieces.
