) finds endless excuses for them to act cartoonishly homosexual in order to score with the few women on board. Full of ironically burly cross-dressers and lisping queens in sequined leather chaps and feather boas (with a couple token "normal" gay guys thrown in as a limp attempt at political correctness), this bomb lacks even a single millisecond of creativity as our heroes act obtusely light in their loafers, lest they lose the trust of two girls they've fallen for (trophy babe Roselyn Sanchez and Playboy Playmate Victoria Silvstedt) before the inevitable, insincere 30-second tolerance lesson and typically misogynistic, sorry-I-lied "happy ending."

"View From the Top"

To the endless soundtrack of grating girl-empowerment country music ditties, Gwyneth Paltrow crash-lands in this inept and lifeless comedy, playing a Nevada-bred white-trash ditz who dreams of a "glamorous" life as a flight attendant. Edited down to what feels like an endless 87 minutes (a run-time that short is a tell-tale sign of desperate post-production rescue attempts), "View From the Top" finds few fresh jokes in its formulaic plot (think "Legally Blonde" at 30,000 feet) that forces Paltrow to choose between the man she loves and a prestige stewardessing gig. Apparently it never occurred to writer Eric Wald or director Bruno Barreto that as a flight attendant she could fly to see her boyfriend almost any time she wants. But the plot is the least of this picture's problems. Unenthusiastic actors plod through embarrassingly stale comedic set pieces, shallow stereotypes and hammy throw-away scenes of indulgent improvisation (Mike Myers has a lazy cameo as a flight attendant trainer with a lazy eye). The one scene of aspiring stewardess interviews in

JONATHAN PLOWRIGHT
"We have another marvellous natural talent on our hands" was the comment made by THE TIMES about this exciting British pianists debut London recital. Since then, critics, colleagues and audience alike have had nothing but praise for his many national and international prizewinning performances. A Gold Medallist at the Royal Academy of Music in 1983, Jonathan is now an Associate Professor there, and in demand for masterclasses throughout the UK. In November 1989 he won the European Piano Competition, and has since played all over the world. He has performed with many leading orchestras, given numerous South Bank and Wigmore Hall recitals, as well as BBC broadcasts. Jonathan's commercial recordings have all received brilliant reviews in the media. His most recent recording is the first in a set of four that feature a rare collection of pieces by Paderewski, most of which have never been recorded before. It recently received an outstanding review in Gramophone magazine. Jonathan is also very much in demand as a chamber player and has appeared with many ensembles including the Scottish Ensemble, Guildhall String Ensemble and the Coull Quartet. He has recently enjoyed performing in a piano duo with Stephen Coombs.

It must have been hard to live as a composer in the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth century; after all your peers were Beethoven and Schubert! Such was the plight of the Irish-born composer John Field (1782-1837). On the other hand, Field had a successful career as a pianist. Not of the virtuoso Liszttian ilk, but rather one whose strength was color and sensitivity of touch. These characteristics emerge in Field's Fifth and Sixth Piano Concertos, The Fifth (1817) has the subtitle 'fire by lightning,' but the source of the title is unknown. It opens with a resounding Beethoven-like chord, but the music that follows more closely resembles the piano concertos of Chopin. The piano's role emphasizes delicate nuances, sonorous and intricate melodies, convincingly played by Benjamin Frith. The orchestral passages appropriately contrast the piano's role with drama and tension. The work brims with felicitous melodies and dramatic flourishes that engage the mind and heart. The Sixth Piano Concerto (1819) opens with a stately orchestral introduction that extends into an engaging 20 minute dialogue between piano and orchestra. A lovely, delicate larghetto is followed by an energetic but finely spun rondo. These concertos combine the drama and tension of Beethoven with the lyric delicacy of Chopin. Both are immensely enjoyable: they express the exuberant spirit of a composer who knew and loved the piano. Benjamin Frith plays with the freshness of discovery and wit that serve the composer perfectly. The Northern Sinfonia accompanies enthusiastically and the sound is clear and close, slightly wanting in reverberation. Those wanting to explore Field further are advised to try his Nocturnes, lovely, engaging pieces that admirably predate those of Chopin.

That tagline ends the online preview of the upcoming Broadway musical spoof Dance of the Vampires which is set to begin previews at the Minskoff Theatre Oct. 14 and open Nov. 21 starring Michael Crawford. The fangy tuner with music and lyrics by Jim Steinman (Whistle Down the Wind, the upcoming Batman) will be helmed by Urinetown director John Rando. BATTLEFIELD EARTH
(PG-13) A race of evil creatures called "Psychlos" tries to mine Earth for minerals and gold and to exterminate humans. In the wasteland days of the year 3000, humans seem to number only in the dozens, wear caveman outfits and speak a blend of grunts and perfect English. A Johnny, (Barry Pepper of Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile ), a determined "man animal," leaves his tribe's hidden camps in the Rocky Mountains to confront the evil monsters, the Psychlos. After the Johnny is captured and enslaved, the alien leader, Terl (John Travolta in ratty make-up and dreads), seeing potential, toys with Johnny (or rather, repeatedly calls him "rat brain" and chokes him). He straps the Johnny to a machine that beams the Psychlos language, mathematics and history into his eyes through a ray of light and... oh, hell, the whole thing is too stupid to explain. The entire film is an incomprehensible mess cluttered with grimy scenery, laughable costumes, poorly-edited action sequences, extremely loud sound effects and thematic bits from Planet Of The Apes . Skip this. Based on the novel by Travolta's Scientology leader L. Ron Hubbard. With Forest Whitaker. (Beechwood, Carmike, Commerce Drive-In)
