Biography, albums, concert review
Ivo Pogorelich was born in Belgrade in 1958. He received his first piano lessons at the age of seven, and went to Moscow at the age of twelve to study at the Central Music School and then at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 1976 he began intensive studies with the renowned pianist and teacher Aliza Kezeradze with whom he was married from 1980 until her premature death in 1996. Ivo Pogorelich won the Casagrande Competition in Terni (Italy) in 1978 and the Montreal International Music Competition in 1980; but it was the prize he failed to win that made him world-famous. In 1980 he entered the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw where his elimination in the third round sparked a fierce controversy which drew the attention of the whole musical world to the pianist. Martha Argerich called him a genius and left the jury in protest. Ivo Pogorelich gave his debut recital in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1981. Pogorelich supports young musicians. In 1986 he established a foundation in Croatia to raise funds for scholarships for young artists to further their studies abroad. Since 1989 the annual Ivo Pogorelich Festival has the aim of supporting promising young musicians at the beginning of their careers by giving them the opportunity to perform together with renowned artists. In 1994 the pianist set up a foundation in Sarajevo to raise money to build a hospital and to provide medical support for the people of Sarajevo. With this aim in mind, numerous concerts are planned for the forthcoming year under the auspices of UNESCO. Ivo Pogorelich also gives many charity concerts in support of, for example, the Red Cross, the rebuilding of Sarajevo, or the fight against illnesses such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. In 1988 he was named an "Ambassador of Goodwill" by UNESCO.

Ivo Pogorelich was born in Belgrade, received his first piano lessons at the age of seven, and went to Moscow at the age of 12 to study at the Central Music School and then at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 1976 he began intensive studies with the renowned pianist and teacher Aliza Kezeradze with whom he was married from 1980 until her untimely death in 1996. Ever since his debut recital in New York's Carnegie Hall (1981), Pogorelich has created a sensation with his performances in all the great concert halls throughout the world - the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, South America and Israel. RENOWNED CROATIAN PIANIST IVO POGORELICH
TO PERFORM WITH THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Washington, D.C. (September 29, 1999)—World renowned Croatian Pianist Ivo Pogorelich will perform with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra for three performances at the Kennedy Center, October 7-9, 1999.
"A musical figure comparable to Horowitz and Rachmaninoff in setting the style for a new era," the Los Angeles Times raved of the excitement Pogorelich brings to the stage. "One of the more compelling performers today." Although his first visit to Washington in several years, this will not be Pogorelich's first trip to the United States in 1999. In April, Pogorelich stepped to the stage of Chicago's Symphony Center with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the grand finale of "Croatia in Chicago", a three-day exhibition which showcased Croatia's political, economic and cultural contributions to the United States. He lent his renown and talent to support his countrymen in establishing Croatia's General Consulate in Chicago, a home away from home for the 200,00-strong community of Croats that reside in and around the city. "Ivo is known throughout the world for his passionate and uncompromising interpretation of the world's most astute classical pieces," said Croatian Ambassador Miomir Zuzul. From Chopin to Rachmaninoff, Pogorelich has dazzled audiences throughout the world with his grasp of music as a social and cultural entity." With the National Symphony Orchestra, the internationally acclaimed pianist will render his famous interpretation of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto.

http://www.cami.co.uk/pogorelich.htm
IVO POGORELICH Ivo Pogorelich initially gained international attention as a pianist of rare gift and unique talent when he won the First Prize in the International Music Competition in Montreal, Canada, in 1980, having won previously First Prizes in several national events in the former Yugoslavia and the First Prize in the Alessandro Casagrande International Piano Competition in Terni, Italy, in 1978. But, it was the political controversy surrounding his elimination from the finals of the 1980 Warsaw International Chopin Competition and the resultant proclamation of Martha Argerich - one of the jurors and herself the winner in 1965 - "This man is a genius" - that catapulted him to instant recognition and world fame. Since his recital debut in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1981, Ivo Pogorelich has made triumphant appearances in all the major concert halls throughout the USA, Canada, Europe, Australasia, Japan, South America and Israel, performing with the world's leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Philadelphia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Tonhalle Philharmonic, London Symphony and many others. He is on of the very few classical musicians today to sell out at virtually every concert venue. "One of the more compelling performers before the public today" was The New York Times' description of Ivo Pogorelich's recent Carnegie Hall recital. "Pogorelich takes chances but leaves nothing to chance - - a musical figure comparable to Horowitz, Padarewski and Rachmaninov in setting the style for another era" was Los Angeles Times' rave comment. In another review, The New York Times was even more euphoric: "Pogorelich is comparable to Horowitz. He played each note exactly, with such feeling, such expression. He was a whole orchestra. He was playing two hundred years ahead of his time." Reviewing a rare performance in London, The Daily Telegraph commented: "It would be offensive to compare Ivo Pogorelich's playing of Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto with the composer's own 1932 recording. Offensive because this performance was so infinitely superior to that or any other I can remember."

April 9, 1999 B Y A NDREW P ATNER While the war in neighboring Yugoslavia still fills the front pages, Croatia made its bid for the business and arts sections this week with a three-day celebration of the opening of its first consulate in Chicago. After a special mass celebrated by Cardinal Francis George and a trade conference, dignitaries turned their attention to Michigan Avenue where Grant Park is home to the two enormous 1928 equestrian Indian statues by Croatia's greatest visual artist, Ivan Mestrovic. Then, with the city's most prominent Croatian-American, Edward R, Vrdolyak, as a ``platinum sponsor'' and its most beloved Croatian resident, Toni Kukoc signing autographs on the box level, Orchestra Hall was home to a special concert Thursday night featuring the young country's most gifted musician, pianist Ivo Pogorelich and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Pogorelich is not exactly a native son as he was born in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia and a then-unified Yugoslavia that, at the time, also included Croatia. But the pianist is half-Croatian and has identified himself with the cause of that nation and people. When he burst on the scene almost 20 years ago, he was a sultry and sullen teenager, drawing attention for his moody look as much as his pianistic prowess. Despite his erratic behavior and frequent cancellations in the intervening years, his Chopin performances and recordings have continued to be noteworthy.

Pianist Ivo Pogorelich celebrates his 40th birthday
Ivo Pogorelich is perhaps the only great pianist who became an instant celebrity for the prize he didn't win. It was in 1980, when he was eliminated in the third round of the Warsaw Chopin Competition. A argument ensued among the jurors, and Martha Argerich, a member of the jury, resigned in protest, claiming "Pogorelich is a genius!" The scandal provoked by Argerich's reaction made him famous overnight. The eyes of the musical world were soon upon young Ivo Pogorelich, and they have yet to be disappointed. Born in Belgrade in 1958, Ivo Pogorelich celebrates his 40th birthday on October 20th. He began playing the piano at the age of seven. After his classical training at the Moscow Conservatory, he took master classes from Aliza Kezeradze, who passed on to him the tradition of the Liszt-Siloti school. In an interview with the German weekly newspaper "Die Zeit", Pogorelich once listed the four most important things he learned from Kezeradze: "First, technical perfection as something natural. Second, an insight into the development of the piano sound, as perfected by the pianist-composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, composers who understood the piano both as a human voice ... and as an orchestra with which they could produce a variety of colors. Third, the need to learn how to use every aspect of our new instruments, which are richer in sound. Fourth, the importance of differentiation." Pogorelich won the Casagrande Competition in 1978 and the first prize of the International Music Competition in Montreal in 1980. Since the Warsaw scandal, Pogorelich has been pursuing a brilliant international career. His debuts in London, Paris, New York, Madrid, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, Milan and Tel Aviv were triumphs. He has performed with practically all the major orchestras in the world, and his recitals are almost always sold out. Comparing him with Horowitz, the New York Times once wrote: "He was an entire orchestra." His often controversial and always stunning interpretations confirm the originality of his talent and intellect.

Natalie Tsaldarakis, pianist Natalie Tsaldarakis was born in Stockholm, Sweeden. She began her music studies first in Italy and then, later on in Athens, Greece at the Hellinikon Conservatory. Her studies continued under soloist and pedagogue Dimitri Toufexis and other notable Julliard graduates, such as Danae Kara, Dr. Bedford and Dr. McHugh. All had the priviledge to transmit their love of beautiful tone and contemporary music, that was first instilled in them by the renowned William Masselos (himself the protege of Copland).
Her studies lead to the award of a B.A. in Music from the American College of Greece with distinction, an Artist Diploma in Piano Performance also with distinction from the Polymnios Conservatory (class of D. Toufexis) and a Master of Music from the State University of Pennsylvania in West Chester (the birth place of another major composer, S. Barber). While studying at the Master's level, she held the positions of teaching assistant to the Keyboard Dept. (assistant to Prof. Schieck, pupil of the great Leschetitsky and author of a book on the teaching method of his master) and the Music Pedagogy Dept. Upon graduation, she was invited to membership by the National Honor Music Society PKL.
