Archive Article - Fall 2000 Index AUGUST 29, 2000. The implications are huge. To date, the classical music industry, in large part, has shied away from tapping technology as a source for innovative marketing. Now, listening to performing artists on the Web is earmarked to promote, rather than reduce, attendance at concerts. The internet can assist concert organizations in marketing their concerts, encouraging concert-goers to be familiar with their lineup of performers. Moreover, bookers for concert organizations will have a new resource from which to select artists, rather than solely be dependent on managers’ choices for ‘flavor-of-the month" soloists. They can actually hear and view for themselves, rather than book from subjective opinions and hearsay. Additionally, concert-goers who check out artists on the Web will be able to make a more informed choice as to what concerts they wish to attend and have a more intimate knowledge of an artist that they do go to hear, as in the Pollack case. Developed by the Los Angeles-based web design firm Info 2, President Arnie Boyarsky commented on the unusual aspects of dealing with the classical music world. "We have designed for Pop artists such as jazz musician Chico Freeman, but entering the classical music arena with an interactive site that uses the latest technology is entering untested ground. It is a question of leading the way gently so that acceptance is smooth."

For Irvine World News Despite a long association with the Yamaha Corp. in the United States and Japan, despite living in Los Angeles County, where he works as a piano professor at USC - not to mention despite there being a Yamaha center in Irvine - it has taken world renowned pianist Daniel Pollack years before finally making his Irvine debut. After becoming ill, Pollack is back in action performing and giving master classes, both of which he will offer at the Yamaha Music Center in Woodbridge on Saturday at 2 p.m. in his Irvine debut. "Because of the nature of the audience, there's nothing super-heavy on my concert," said Pollack, who will offer a program of short works.

Daniel Pollack, pianist
Biography According to Time magazine, "pianist Daniel Pollack's artistry has a flair for the romantics." Pollack's two romantic classical recordings on Four Winds First Kiss and Passionate Kiss encompass that flair, the tonal beauty, the grand line sweep and the power that has brought Pollack universal acclaim. Daniel Pollack began his studies at the age of four, and made his debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of nine, performing Chopin's First Piano Concerto. He is a graduate of the Julliard School from the class of the legendary Rosina Lhevinne. He continued his graduate studies at the Hochshule fur Musik in Vienna under a Fullbright scholarship. Pollack first came to the international music world's attention, when he became a prizewinner in the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. Subsequently, he concertized throughout the former Soviet Union, and became the first American to record there. His concert career has taken him across the United States countrywide, and worldwide across four other continents - Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa. Daniel has been on the music faculty of the University of Southern California for 25 years. When not teaching or performing, he is much in demand on International Competition juries, among them the Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff in Russia, and the Queen Elizabeth Piano Competition in Brussels. His talent has also attracted attention from Hollywood. When actress Amy Irving played Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto as the winning pianist in "The Competition" (co-staring Richard Dreyfuss), the performance on the soundtrack was Pollack's.

Freddy Kempf in Moscow for the Tchaikovsky Competition
The Sunday Times of London
Michael Wright
July 19, 1998 "This year's Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, which came to a controversial climax in Moscow three weeks ago, saw the explosion of a shining new British talent on the international piano scene. While other pianists marched off the stage of the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire to polite applause or - on one or two painful occasions, complete silence - Frederick Kempf, 20, won ovation after standing ovation, and became the hero of the competition. Kempf, educated at St Edmund's School in Canterbury and taught by the great Ronald Smith before becoming a star pupil at the Royal Academy of Music, first came to widespread attention when he won the 1992 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. But none of this had prepared him for the emotional buzz of the Tchaikovsky competition.
"The applause after my Tchaikovsky concerto went on and on for about 10 minutes," he recalls, almost with a sense of wonder. "This was always my dream. Not to win a competition, but to bring that much pleasure to an audience. It took the announcer some time to calm them down. By the time I got to halfway through the last movement of my Rachmaninov 3, I decided just to enjoy myself. It was like a roller-coaster ride towards the end. It was so exciting. And then I had to wade through the crowds, with everyone trying to touch me, and the audience still clapping even after the lights were turned out and the janitors were sweeping up."

Controversial: Freddy Kempf enraptured the audience in the 1998 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition but was only placed third Related article: Repertoire with the most exuberant spirit of adventure 28 Jun 1999
Brilliant Kempf conquers Moscow
Briton's creative talent ensures he will join pantheon of great pianists, says LIONEL CHOI YOU are only allowed to take one bow. It's a competition." Or so young British pianist Freddy Kempf was told during the finals of the 1998 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. And so he had no choice but to leave the explosion of cheers from the ecstatic audience which went on for some 20 minutes following his riveting back-to-back performances of the Tchaikovsky First and Rachmaninov Third concertos, even after the stage was cleared and the house lights in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire were turned off. Busloads of screaming fans jammed the corridors to take a closer look at the young star, the hero of what is arguably the classical music world's most prestigious tournament. Not since Texan pianist Van Cliburn's historic win in 1958 has any participant been granted such feverish rock-star treatment. And all this from a discerning Muscovite audience well-acquainted with their own unparalleled legacy of pianistic excellence.
