Maurizio Pollini Recital 10/5/97 This afternoon I went to hear the famous Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini playing Chopin and Debussy at Symphony Hall in Boston. I hadn't heard him in recital here in Boston for at least ten years, though I heard him many times at the Festival Hall in London. I think he cancelled several concerts in Boston. The previous times I had heard him he had played Chopin, Brahms, Schumann and Stravinsky (Petroushka) but not Debussy, so this recital was really interesting. In my opinion he is one of the greatest pianists of all time. He played to an almost capacity audience in Boston. The first half of the recital consisted of Chopin's works including the Prelude No 25 in C sharp minor, Ballade No 1 in G minor, Ballade No 4 in F minor, Berceuse, and Scherzo No 3 in C sharp minor. I haven't heard the Op 25 prelude in recital very much, which is surprising as it it is so beautiful. It is rather sad and dreamy, reminiscent of some of his Nocturnes, and has some interesting modulations to other keys. He played it with a beautiful cantabile singing melody. The two Ballades were very dramatic performances. In the coda of both ballades he played them extremely fast but at no time was there any blurring of tone or loss of detail. He brings out every harmonic subtlety and every nuance.

Saturday, October 21, 2000 Chinese pianist, 18, wins Chopin contest WARSAW Li Yundi of China won the coveted gold medal yesterday at the 14th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition, the first time the event's top prize has been awarded since 1985. The Chopin competition, held every five years, is devoted entirely to music by the 19th-century Polish composer. Li, 18, beat five other finalists and 98 entrants in all for the gold, which includes a R175000 cash award The judging is so tough that in 1990 and 1995 no performances were deemed good enough for a gold medal. Second place in the Chopin competition was awarded to Ingrid Fliter, 27, of Argentina, and third went to Alexander Kobrin, 20, of Russia. A Chopin prize from Warsaw can open doors to the world's great halls and launch major careers for young pianists. Past winners have included Maurizio Pollini of Italy, Argentina's Martha Argerich, Poland's Krystian Zimerman and Stanislaw Bunin of Russia. A major cultural event in Poland, the Chopin competition sets the world standard for interpreting the virtuoso's complex and highly emotional works. It was created when five soloists from Vienna and Berlin, mainly principal players in the Vienna and Berlin philharmonic orchestras, decided to pursue their joint chamber music activities in a more formal arrangement. The group quickly achieved a tonal and musical homogeneity that allows each soloist's musical ideas and personality to blend into a vibrant whole. Over the years, with the wind quintet as its nucleus, the Ensemble has worked regularly with other musicians, particularly string players and pianists, expanding its repertoire to encompass a wide range of chamber music (including such works as Debussy's "Chanson de Bilitis"). This breadth of activity is also reflected in the Ensemble's more than 20 recordings for Sony Classical and Deutsche Grammophon and its video production with James Levine as pianist for UNTTEL. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Ensemble was the subject of a 60-minute documentary portrait titled "We Have a Lot of Fun," produced by Euroarts for television broadcast and videocassette release. The Ensemble Wien-Berlin celebrates its 20th birthday in 2003 with tours of the United States and Europe. The Lucerne Festival has commissioned a work by Wolfgang Rihm to be premiered by the ensemble in 2003.
