What's In A Name?
A whole lot of hassles, according to Diana Quinn of local band The Towering Bouffants. ãWeâve learned that in this age you must be very careful about choosing your name and that money is a very powerful thing,ä Quinn said, now that her band has agreed on the settlement of a lawsuit filed by Memphis band The Bouffants. The Towering Bouffants will not be required to pay any monetary compensation and will begin using a new moniker of The Fabulettes after December 31st in keeping with the settlement agreement. She added that the new Fabulettes will not abandon their bouffant hairstyles. ãHaving that silhouette of the three towers of hair walking down the street does a lot for our visibility,ä laughed Quinn.

I am basically of Scots and English lineage, with some Irish, German, and Polish blood as well. My parents are both still living – my father is 85, my mother 83. I will soon turn 55. I have two brothers, one older, one younger. Both are businessmen. What form did your early schooling take? I did ‘normal’ schooling (in the USA, public schools) through secondary school, whereupon I went to the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia for three years and then on to the Juilliard School in New York for another three, earning both Bachelors of Science and Masters of Music at the latter institution. Who were your music teachers?

The Story Perhaps the best loved of all family musicals, "Oliver" is a joyful and entertaining musical version of Dicken's "Oliver Twist". Oliver is the foundling who escapes the indignities of the workhouse to find success and happiness in the London underworld. Oliver's new friends include the Artful Dodger and Fagin, who teach him to 'pick a pocket or two'. The loving and colourful Nancy pledges her friendship for 'as long as he needs her', and for her Oliver would do anything. The evil Bill Sykes is the big love in her life. The plot thickens. What is the secret of Oliver's past? Synopsis of Scenes The place is London. The time about 1850. ACT I Scene 1. The Workhouse - Early Evening

So You Want to be a Film Composer?
by Lukas Kendall Man alive, the number of people who want to be film composers these days... it used to be that when people wanted to be in music, they wanted to be a great pianist or a Broadway songwriter. Then, everybody wanted to be in a band. Now, everyone's already in a band, and they want to make money by scoring films. I think it's great that film music is being taken seriously to the point where so many people want to get into it. But like screenwriting or professional athletics, this is a field where the available slots are few, and the hopefuls are many. To that end, here's some helpful advice, and we plan much more of this in FSM (the magazine) in 1998. To start, two tips, from my own personal observations. If you want to be a film composer: 1) Don't try to be John Williams.

Wing and a Prey
By KEVIN WILLIAMSON Calgary Sun At this point, we are probably just weeks away from a Tom Hanks-produced, 120-hour HBO mini-series about Green Lantern. If you haven't noticed, Hollywood is crazy about comic book heroes. Not that you can blame them. Consider Spider-Man's grosses ($400 million in North America) and the success of Smallville not to mention the box-office bonanza expected for forthcoming film versions of the Hulk and Daredevil as well as the X-Men sequel and the closest thing these days to obtaining a licence to print money is receiving permission to bring The Astonishing Ant Man to celluloid. Certainly there's no other reason for Birds of Prey a Batman spinoff from the creators of Smallville to exist other than to bolster Warner Bros. coffers. (The series airs on The WB and the characters are all Warners-owned.)
