Misery Loves Company I'm too happy to enjoy Rachmaninoff as much as I used to. When I was a suffering, insufferable teenager, he was my favorite composer. During my first semester in college, I wallowed in my misery to the tear-jerking melodies of this latter-day (1873-1943) romantic. Here was my soul-mate: a composer who shared my depressions, insecurities, and longings for acceptance and love. My roommate at the time - a vulgar, tasteless, oil tycoon's son from Wichita, Kansas - referred to this world-class composer, pianist and conductor as "Rocky." I almost killed him, but he dropped out of school, and my life, before I had the chance. I shall always love Rachmaninoff, but I doubt that I shall ever relate to his music quite as much as I did back then. Misery loves company, and Rachmaninoff kept me company, record after record, day after day. Starting with his most famous works - the Piano Concerto No. 2, the Symphony No. 2 , and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini - I expanded my record collection to include every Rachmaninoff composition that had ever been issued. I even learned to play his most famous piano piece, the Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, myself - no small feat for someone who rarely attempted any work which wasn't in C major. The Second Symphony, like the Second Piano Concerto, is one of Rachmaninoff's indisputable masterpieces, even though he himself didn't realize this. "I give my solemn word," he said after finishing it, "no more symphonies!" Nevertheless, he broke his promise - only once - some 30 years later.

World-wide FREE postage on CD purchases SERGEI LYAPUNOV by Dr David C F Wright My introduction to this composer, many years ago, was his Piano Concerto no. 2 in E, op. 28, which dates from 1909, the same year as Rachmaninov’s superlative Piano Concerto no. 3 in D minor. Both concertos are dedicated to the same pianist, Josef Hofmann, the Polish born pianist who was born in 1876. He made his concert debut when he was eleven years old and later studied with Moszkowski and Anton Rubinstein. He settled in America and was renowned for his playing of Chopin and Liszt. He was the director of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia from 1925- 1938. For some obscure reason he sometimes used the pseudonym, Michel Dvorsky. He was also a composer with five piano concertos, piano sonatas and a symphony to his name. But to return to Lyapunov. This Piano Concerto no. 2 has a main theme which is very close to the main theme of Brahms's Piano Concerto no. 1 in D minor. Incidentally the main theme of the first movement of Lalo's Symphony in G minor is very close to the Brahms's theme as well.

He studied at the Moscow Conservatory graduating with distinction as both pianist and composer. During the ensuing years he composed piano pieces, including his famous c-sharp Minor Prelude, songs and orchestral works, but the disastrous premiere in 1897 of his Symphony No.1. He composed his Second Piano Concerto. Meanwhile he had set out on a new career as a conductor, appearing in Moscow and London. The essentials of his art had been assembled in the Piano Concerto no.2. Rachmaninov inherited Romanticism from Tchaikovsky and his teachers. In 1909 he made his first American tour as a pianist, for which he wrote the Piano Concerto no.3. After the October Revolution he left Russia with his family for Scandinavia. In 1918 they arrived in New York, where he mainly lived thereafter, though he spent periods in Paris Dresden and Switzerland. There was a period of creative silence until 1926 when he wrote the Piano Concerto no.4, followed by only a handful of works over the next 15 years, even though all are on a large scale.
